BACKGROUND: Free jejunal transfer has become the standard technique for reconstruction of the pharynx and hypopharynx, especially with proximal neoplastic lesions, whereas gastric tube interposition is the technique of choice for reconstruction of the hypopharynx and cervical esophagus when resection extends below the thoracic inlet.
HYPOTHESIS: Surgical ablation is a viable option for advanced hypopharyngeal and cervical esophageal neoplasms, with stomach interposition a safe and preferred method of reconstruction.
DESIGN: Retrospective analysis.
SETTING: University hospital that is a regi

BACKGROUND: Conservative surgery has proven advantageous in controlling hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HSCC) and preserving speech and swallowing function in carefully selected patients, typically with early T-stages diseases. A variety of modified surgical procedures or techniques have been proposed.
METHODS: In this study, we present a novel surgical approach for hypopharyngeal carcinoma resection utilizing the paraglottic space.
RESULTS: The paraglottic space approach can help expose neoplasms under direct vision and save mucosa during surgery while sufficiently preserving laryng

Patients who survive Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) are at increased risk of secondary neoplasms (SNs). A wide variety of SNs have been reported, including leukemias, non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, and solid tumors, specifically breast and thyroid cancers. Herein we report subsequent neoplasms in four patients with HL receiving chemoradiotherapy. It is interesting that three SNs, fibrosarcoma, thyroid carcinoma, and retrobulbar meningioma, were observed in the radiation area in one of our patients. A hypopharyngeal epithelioid malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor as an unusual secondary malignant neoplasm

The clinical and epidemiological data of 41 hypopharyngeal neoplasms diagnosed at the Department of Otolaryngology, Hospital de "La Santa Cruz y San Pablo", Barcelona, are analysed according to eleven computerized parameters. Our results are compared with those appeared in the literature. Though the are close similarities with regard to incidence, sex, tobacco and alcohol consumption, presentation, and histology, our patients are younger and in a better condition than it is generally accepted.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with head and neck cancer may develop a second primary neoplasm (SPN) of the esophagus due to field cancerization. This study investigated the impacts of esophageal cancer screening using magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (ME-NBI) on the outcomes of hypopharyngeal cancer patients.
METHODS: Patients with hypopharyngeal cancer diagnosed from 2008 to 2021 in a tertiary hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Screening and surveillance using ME-NBI examination of the esophagus were divided into three patterns: (1) ME-NBI never performed or more than 6 months aft

We present the case of a 58-year-old man with a history of dysphagia, who was found to have a submucosal lipoma of the hypopharynx. The lesion was removed endoscopically, with resolution of the patient's symptoms. Lipomas are benign fatty neoplasms commonly found in the soft tissues of the neck. Although they are rarely seen in the tissues of the upper aerodigestive tract, they must be considered in the differential diagnosis of hypopharyngeal masses that may cause dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Extensive mucosal resection following endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for hypopharyngeal neoplasms can result in scar contracture and pharyngeal deformity, potentially increasing the risk of aspiration pneumonia. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of local triamcinolone acetonide (TA) injection for preventing post-ESD pharyngeal deformity.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 388 patients who underwent ESD for hypopharyngeal neoplasms between 2011 and 2026. Patients were divided into those who received local TA injection after ESD (TA group, n…

Solitary fibrous tumors are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that are increasingly being described in the head and neck. Clinical presentations may include compression by these tumors on vital surrounding structures. While malignant transformation is rare, treatment entails wide local excision. We present the case of a 74 year-old female with an increasingly enlarging symptomatic hypopharyngeal solitary fibrous tumor that was found on carotid duplex ultrasound. Transoral surgical excision resulted in relief of symptoms. Treatment options are discussed and a literature review of this uncommon disorde

Cross-sectional imaging with CT and MR imaging plays an indispensable complementary role to endoscopy in the pretherapeutic work-up of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer and is very valuable for the detection of tumor recurrence after surgery or radiation treatment as well. Close interdisciplinary co-operation and the radiologist's familiarity with therapeutic options and challenges are required in order to use these powerful diagnostic tools in an optimal fashion. Other indications for cross-sectional imaging of the larynx and hypopharynx include uncommon neoplasms, benign masses, inflammato

312 patients with neoplasms of the oropharynx, hypopharynx and larynx--301 of these suffered from malignancies--were examined with use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and--in most cases--with computed tomography (CT) for comparison. MRI yielded better results than CT in the case of oropharyngeal tumors. With regard to hypopharyngeal tumors, however, slight discrepancies in the diagnostic capacities of both methods were observed. MRI afforded a clearer tumor definition through sagittal and coronal slice orientations. In the case of laryngeal neoplasms in the glottic region, CT is currently

Apatinib, one of the novel oral antiangiogenic agents, shows survival benefits in treating advanced or metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma. However, its efficacy in treating advanced head and neck neoplasms has not been reported. Herein, three elderly men with advanced head and neck neoplasms were treated with apatinib and S-1. Their initial diagnoses were hypopharyngeal carcinoma, metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck, and squamous cell carcinoma of the pyriform sinus. All patients underwent repeated chemotherapy but developed disease progression. As they refused radiotherapy due

Two cases with piriform fossa cancer underwent larynx lateral wall repair surgery. Case 1: The patient was admitted to the hospital because of pharyngeal discomfort with swallowing pain for 2 months Electronic laryngoscopy revealed neoplasm in the left piriform fossa. Space occupying lesion in left piriform fossa and paranasal space was found in MRI scan. The pathological diagnosis of this patient was squamous cell squamous cell carcinoma (T2N1M0). Case 2: The patient was admitted to the hospital because of blood in the sputum for more than 1 year. The electronic laryngoscope suggested neoplas

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that can present essentially anywhere in the body. Presentations in the hypopharynx are extremely rare with only two previous cases reported. We report the first case of postcricoid SFT occurring in a 58-year-old male requiring a microsuspension laryngoscopy excision following an unsuccessful transoral robotic attempt. The excision was uneventful, and the patient is currently without recurrence. Current management strategies of the hypopharyngeal SFT, the unique differential diagnosis, and challenges in surgical approaches in the post

Laryngeal or hypopharyngeal localization of adenoid cystic carcinoma is rare due to the poor distribution of the accesory salivary glands in this area. We report one case of such neoplasm on that area, with its diagnosis confirmed histologically. The required a total laryngectomy with later reoperations because of hemorrhage and pharyngeal fistula. One year after the surgery and in spite of postoperative radiotherapy multiple pulmonary metastasis were detected causing the death of the patient. We review the literature of this tumor whose prognosis is much worse than epidermoid or scamous carci

Well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDLPS), also termed atypical lipomatous tumor, is a low-grade malignant adipocytic neoplasm characterized by indolent growth, limited metastatic potential, and a propensity for local recurrence. Primary WDLPS arising in the hypopharyngeal region is exceptionally rare, particularly in young adults, and may clinically mimic benign submucosal lesions. We report the case of a 24-year-old man who presented with a one-month history of persistent foreign body sensation in the throat. Flexible laryngoscopy revealed a smooth submucosal mass arising from the left hypopha

Total extrathoracic esophagectomy was performed in 16 patients with neoplasms arising in the thoracic and cervical esophagus and the hypopharynx. The procedure was combined with posterior mediastinal gastric pull up in all but two patients who had previous gastrectomy and were managed with colon interposition. Splenectomy was avoided in all patients. Although, in the presence of TNM stage III and IV disease, the procedure was performed mostly for palliation, it resulted in only two deaths and it led to rapid initiation of oral alimentation. Extrathoracic esophagectomy constitutes a safe and si
