Lipoma of hypopharynx.

The histologically benign hypopharyngeal lipoma is a potentially fatal tumour because of the risk of upper airway obstruction. It may be asymptomatic or present with symptoms ranging from vague foreign-body sensation to sore throat, dysphagia or dysphonia. The diagnosis may be suggested by indirect or fibreoptic laryngoscopy. Lateral neck soft tissue X-ray and barium swallow may help but CT imaging of the pharynx enables a more precise preoperative diagnosis. Treatment is by surgical excision of the lesion either perorally, endoscopically or via a lateral pharyngotomy. Long-term follow-up is r

A leiomyosarcoma of the hypopharynx.

A fourth case of leiomyosarcoma of the hypopharynx is reported. The histopathological diagnosis and treatment are discussed. Surgery is still the treatment of choice and, in combination with chemotherapy (especially Methotrexate) and radiotherapy, the recurrence rate can be reduced. However, randomized studies are required.

Pharyngoceles of the hypopharynx.

The differential diagnosis of the complaint of dysphagia is extensive; however, a search of the literature gives the impression that pharyngocele as a cause of dysphagia is relatively infrequent, since only 18 well-documented cases have been reported. On the other hand, the author's experience reveals that pharyngocele occurs more commonly than indicated in the literature as, over the past 2 years, 24 patients with pharyngocele have been personally observed. This thesis is divided primarily into three sections: 1. a review of the physiology and anatomy involved in the swollowing mechanism; 2.

Carcinoma of the hypopharynx.

The data in this study suggest that radical surgical treatment offers the best chance for control of disease in patients with cancer of the hypopharynx. The cervical lymph nodes are at a very high risk for early involvement by metastatic disease. Elective treatment of cervical lymph nodes must be considered in initial treatment planning to obtain better control of regional disease.
