A defining feature of Earth's present-day climate is that the Southern Hemisphere is stormier than the Northern Hemisphere. Consistently, the Southern Hemisphere has a stronger jet stream and more extreme weather events than the Northern Hemisphere. Understanding the relative importance of land-ocean contrast, including topography, radiative processes, and ocean circulation for determining this storminess asymmetry is important and may be helpful for interpreting projections of future storminess. Here, we show that the stormier Southern Hemisphere is induced by nearly equal contributions from

The comprehensive investigation of the excellently preserved mummy of Ötzi, the Iceman, and his equipment over the last 30 years has provided a wealth of information about the life and disease of this late Neolithic individual. This research has indicated that his origin was from a local southern Alpine population, that he grew up in the valleys of the Southern Alps, and that he had considerable local mobility. He had well-balanced nutrition with a mixed vegetable and animal diet. He was very mobile in the alpine terrain and of athletic constitution. The Iceman suffered from mild to moderate d

Arctic lakes are exceptionally vulnerable to climate change, yet the depth-specific responses of their water quality remain largely unexplored, primarily due to the scarcity of long-term, depth-resolved water quality data. This study investigates how climatic and ice phenology conditions influence water quality in the surface and deep layers of Lake Inari, a large, oligotrophic arctic lake with minimal human-induced disturbance. Leveraging a 44-year dataset of in-situ measurements (1980-2023), we utilize canonical correlation analysis (CCA) to assess the potential interactions among key water

Surface melting supports the development of pigmented algal blooms on the Greenland Ice Sheet, decreasing albedo and further accelerating melting. The interplay between carbon-fixing algae and carbon-respiring heterotrophic microorganisms ultimately controls the amount and composition of organic matter (OM) and thus the ice and snow color. Yet, the dynamics of microbially-derived OM on the Greenland Ice Sheet remain unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we incubated in situ algae-dominated snow and ice samples under light and dark conditions and characterized the changes in dissolved and par

Niche-conservative species are especially susceptible to changes in their environment, and detecting the negative effects of new stressors in their habitats is vital for safeguarding of these species. In the Arctic, human disturbance including marine traffic and exploration of resources is increasing rapidly due to climate change-induced reduction of sea ice. Here, we show that the narwhal, Monodon monoceros, is extremely sensitive to human-made noise. Narwhals avoided deep diving (> 350 m) with simultaneous reduction of foraging and increased shallow diving activity as a response to either sh

In recent decades, the Arctic has experienced rapid atmospheric warming and sea ice loss, with an ice-free Arctic projected by the end of this century. Cyclones are synoptic weather events that transport heat and moisture into the Arctic, and have complex impacts on sea ice, and the local and global climate. However, the effect of a changing climate on Arctic cyclone behavior remains poorly understood. This study uses high resolution (4 km), regional modeling techniques and downscaled global climate reconstructions and projections to examine how recent and future climatic changes alter cyclone

Sediments covering Arctic continental shelves are uniquely impacted by ice processes. Delivery of sediments is generally limited to the summer, when rivers are ice free, permafrost bluffs are thawing, and sea ice is undergoing its seasonal retreat. Once delivered to the coastal zone, sediments follow complex pathways to their final depocenters-for example, fluvial sediments may experience enhanced seaward advection in the spring due to routing under nearshore sea ice; during the open-water season, boundary-layer transport may be altered by strong stratification in the ocean due to ice melt; du

Unlike in many polar regions, the spatial extent and duration of the sea ice season have increased in the Ross Sea sector of the Southern Ocean during the satellite era. Simultaneously, populations of Adélie penguins, a sea ice obligate, have been stable or increasing in the region. Relationships between Adélie penguin population growth and sea ice concentration (SIC) are complex, with sea ice driving different, sometimes contrasting, demographic patterns. Adélie penguins undergo a complete molt annually, replacing all their feathers while fasting shortly after the breeding season. Unlike most

The characteristics of ion concentration were studied in snowpit samples collected from the GRHK glacier, the XDKMD glacier and the YZF glacier over the Tibetan Plateau. Samples of snowpits in these three glaciers were analyzed by ion chromatography and ion sources were also explored by correlation analysis. The results indicated that the concentration of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, Cl- and SO4(2-) increased from the GRHK glacier to the XDKMD glacier and to the YZF glacier, suggesting that the terrestrial matter were major origin from the south to north over the Tibetan Plateau. The concentration of Cl-,

Oil spills in ice-covered freshwater systems pose significant environmental risks, yet predictive modeling frameworks for such conditions remain underdeveloped. This study develops and validates a coupled modeling system integrating the General NOAA Operational Modeling Environment (GNOME) with the Great Lakes Operational Forecast System (GLOFS) to simulate oil spill dispersion under varying ice conditions. Lake Erie served as the study area, with model validation performed using observed drifter trajectory data. Six hypothetical oil spill scenarios were simulated across freezing, stable, and

The Arctic cryosphere is undergoing dramatic changes, including declines in sea ice extent and thickness, ice sheets and glaciers, snow cover and duration and permafrost depth. These changes are having alarming direct and indirect consequences for terrestrial species, habitats and ecosystems. Such impacts are well documented and discussed for plants, birds and mammals, and we are beginning to understand the extent of links between cryospheric changes and terrestrial systems generally. However, terrestrial arthropods are rarely included in studies and reviews on this topic despite their taxonom

Cryoconite holes host diverse microbiomes on glaciers and ice sheets and are important habitats for supraglacial biogeochemical cycling. Despite reports of relative stability of cryoconite hole community composition on the Greenland Ice Sheet, it is not known how microbial function in cryoconite holes evolves under varying environmental conditions. Here, we address this knowledge gap by quantifying the active community members in five cryoconite holes on the Greenland Ice Sheet over a 3-week period during the 2022 melt season using TotalRNA. Active microbiomes were enriched in cyanobacterial s

Geological evidence indicates that grounded ice sheets reached sea level at all latitudes during two long-lived Cryogenian (58 and ≥5 My) glaciations. Combined uranium-lead and rhenium-osmium dating suggests that the older (Sturtian) glacial onset and both terminations were globally synchronous. Geochemical data imply that CO2 was 102 PAL (present atmospheric level) at the younger termination, consistent with a global ice cover. Sturtian glaciation followed breakup of a tropical supercontinent, and its onset coincided with the equatorial emplacement of a large igneous province. Modeling shows

Implying large residence times and complex water origins deep coastal aquifers are of particular interest as they are remarkable markers of climate, water use and land use changes. Over the last decades, the Metropolitan Region of Recife (Brazil) went through extensive environmental changes increasing the pressure on water resources and giving rise to numerous environmental consequences on the coastal groundwater systems. We analysed the groundwater of the deep aquifers Cabo and Beberibe that are increasingly exploited. The processes potentially affecting groundwater residence times and flow p

Glacial ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau undergo pronounced hydrological shifts across the glacial ablation cycle, driven by the onset and retreat of the Indian summer monsoon. To elucidate how transitions between four distinct hydrological ablation stages (pre-ablation, early ablation, late ablation, and frozen) shape microbial community structures and antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) profiles, we analyzed 112 samples collected across four stages from multiple glacier catchments on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau using metagenomic sequencing. Our results indicated that warmer stages favored

UNLABELLED: Sea ice is vital to polar ecosystems and serves as a natural laboratory for studying microbial adaptations in extreme environments. Nevertheless, the diversity and ecology of Antarctic marine RNA viruses have not been sufficiently explored. Here, 11 metatranscriptomes from Antarctic sea ice and ice-associated environments were analyzed to characterize RNA viral communities and their ecological differentiation between sea ice and seawater. Diverse RNA viral lineages were identified, of which Cryppavirales and Picornavirales were dominant. Lenarviricota was predominant in sea ice, hi
