Swimmer's itch (SI) or human cercarial dermatitis is caused by free-swimming larvae of bird parasites of the family Schistosomatidae (Trematoda) which have penetrated thorough the skin. Sometimes, mainly during first infections, the larvae do not cause any symptoms but if trapped by the immune system of the host each larva causes a maculopapular eruption. So far, five bird schistosome species have been reported in Iceland. Cercariae are shed by the freshwater snail Radix peregra but adults live in anseriform birds; one nasal Trichobilharzia species occurs in the nasal cavity of mallards, two v

Reference bias is an issue that affects most genomic studies analysing short reads mapped to a reference genome1,2. It can be mitigated by mapping to multiple haplotypes represented in a pangenome3-5. Here we introduce two new methods to address reference bias: Emblask for pangenome construction and Weaver for mapping to pangenomes at scale. Emblask is a hybrid long- and short-read haplotype-resolved dual assembly pipeline for parent-offspring trio data. Using Emblask, we assembled 698 Icelandic haplotypes and added them to the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium (HPRC) pangenome4 to construc

BACKGROUND: There are few studies assessing the prevalence and characteristics of migraine in the Icelandic population. Previous Icelandic studies have methodological limitations and no study has been performed using full ICHD-3 criteria.
METHODS: The study is based on data from a pilot for the SAGA (Stress-And-Gene-Analysis) cohort study conducted in 2014. The participants were women invited to cancer screening and men randomly sampled from the National Registry of Iceland. Participants answered an online health questionnaire including standardized, validated questions, used to identify migr

INTRODUCTION: Intussusception occurs when a proximal portion of the bowel invaginates into the distal bowel. It is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in children between 3 months and 3 years. This study aimed to assess patient profile, clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, treatment and outcome in children diagnosed with intussusception in Iceland.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of all children diagnosed with intussusception in Iceland during a 25 year period (1986-2010). Patients were identified from a medical record database in Iceland's tw

The history of Icelandic psychiatry is in many ways comparable with neighboring countries. Mentally ill people were badly treated in the country and received no medical treatment until at the beginning of the 20th century. Kleppur Hospital for the mentally insane was built in 1907; hence the development was approximately 150 years later than in comparable countries. Only two doctors contributed significantly to policy making in Icelandic psychiatry until 1959 and they were very different personalities. Dr Thórdur Sveinsson was famous for his interest in hydrotherapy and Dr Helgi Tómasson for h

BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis is a rare disorder in children. Few studies exist on the incidence or prevalence of onychomycosis in children.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the epidemiology of childhood onychomycosis in Iceland during the period 1982-2000.
METHODS: Results from all mycological samples taken from children in Iceland from 1982 to 2000 were examined. Information about the requesting physician, unique social security number, date of birth, sex, results of culture and microscopy were registered. Growth of a dermatophyte was taken as an indication of a case of onychomycosis.
RESULTS: During th

Macroglobulinaemia in an Icelandic family is presented. A woman had Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia, and two of her brothers had monoclonal macroglobulinaemia of the benign form. One was asymptomatic, but the other had polyneuropathy and IgM deposits in peripheral nerves. A third brother of these siblings died of a lymphoreticular disease, which presented with a widespread neuropathy. A second sister had polyclonal increase in serum IgA and two other brothers of this sibship had IgM slightly elevated. A study of all descendants (45 in all and 19 spouses) revealed seven individuals with elevat

From 1965 to 1990, 46 cases of malignant nasopharyngeal tumours were diagnosed in Iceland. The incidence rate is as low as in other Western countries, 0.6/100,000 per year. Histo-pathological diagnosis were as follows: Undifferentiated carcinoma 45%; squamous cell carcinoma 30%; non-keratinizing carcinoma 7%; and plasmacytoma 9%; lymphoma 7%; rhabdomyosarcoma 2%. Four per cent were diagnosed at stage I, 13% at stage II, 29% at stage III and 54% at stage IV. The overall crude survival at 10 years from diagnosis was 28.3%. The following factors were found to have a prognostic value: Stage of dis

Atrial septal defects (ASD) are common congenital heart defects (CHD), 15-22% of all CHD. The diagnosis of ASD is often delayed due to nonspecific symptoms and faint heart murmur and needs confirmation by echocardiography (2 DE). The aim of our study is to study the incidence of ASD, associated defects, and operative results in patients in our population of 260,000. We reviewed the medical records of all patients diagnosed in Iceland with the diagnosis of ASD born in 1984-93. There were 43,809 births during that period. The ASD was confirmed by 2DE in all patients and smaller defects than 4 mm

In 1978, a study was made of legally blind (corrected visual acuity 6/60 or less) and partially seeing (CVA 6/18 to 6/60) children under 15 years of age in Iceland. A total of 43 children were found, of whom 23 were legally blind and 20 partially seeing. The prevalence rates, expressed as the number per 100,000, children of similar age, 36.4 for legal blindness and 31.6 for partial sight. In all 43 children, the visual loss was attributable to heritable, congenital, or developmental defects. The most common causes of visual loss were optic nerve atrophy and cataracts. Other causes are listed a

INTRODUCTION: Gallbladder carcinoma is about 0.5% of all cancer. The outcome of patients with gallbladder carcinoma is overall bad and the only potentially curative treatment is surgery. The aim of this study was to determine the disease's prevalence in Iceland and outcome of the patients diagnosed in the study period.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of all diagnosed patients with gallbladder carcinoma during the years 2004-2013. A list of patients was obtained from the Icelandic Cancer Registry. Information was gathered from the patient's charts in Landspitali University

Laryngeal chondritis is a chronic disease in sheep with low morbidity, high mortality and unresolved pathogenesis. The disease has been recognized recently in Iceland and affects both ewes and rams. Animals of different ages are affected, but lambs and yearlings predominate. The disease is seen in housed animals and most cases occur during the late winter months. We report the gross and microscopical findings in 45 cases of laryngeal chondritis in Icelandic sheep.

This study describes the prevalence of hepatitisG virus (HGV) in Iceland, in blood donors and in persons with parenteral risk factors. Among 370 randomly selected Icelandic blood donors, the prevalence of HGV viraemia was 3.8%, whereas the prevalence of HGV antibodies in the same donor group was found to be 13.2%, thus indicating that at least 17% of blood donors in Iceland had previously been exposed to HGV. Previous exposure was seen in all age groups and also in older blood donors. Among intravenous drug users (IVDUs), the prevalence of HGV was much higher. Among 109 hepatitisC virus (HCV)

Identification of patients with subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) in Iceland was performed by means of a survey based on the histopathologic or immunofluorescent diagnosis of lupus erythematosus. Respondents underwent serologic studies, gave histories, and, dependent upon the latter, were examined. The resultant proportional rate of patients with SCLE approached 10% of all lupus erythematosus cases.

Food allergies have been on the rise in the Western world and are now considered to have become a serious public health problem. Iceland is no exception. Little was known about the prevalence of food allergies in Iceland until the end of the last century. At that time, and at the beginning of this century, Icelanders were involved in extensive international research on food allergies. The first study was in 18-month-old children, which showed food allergies in 1.85% of the children, with egg allergies the most common. In The European Community Respiratory Health Survey IgE antibodies for 6 foo
