The impact of dengue illness on social distancing and caregiving behavior.

BACKGROUND: Human mobility among residential locations can drive dengue virus (DENV) transmission dynamics. Recently, it was shown that individuals with symptomatic DENV infection exhibit significant changes in their mobility patterns, spending more time at home during illness. This change in mobility is predicted to increase the risk of acquiring infection for those living with or visiting the ill individual. It has yet to be considered, however, whether social contacts are also changing their mobility, either by socially distancing themselves from the infectious individual or increasing cont

Assessing risk of violent behavior among veterans with severe mental illness.

Although empirical research has examined factors associated with increased violence risk among individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) and among veterans without SMI, less attention has been devoted to identifying violence risk factors among veterans with SMI. Using multivariable analysis of a large pooled sample of individuals with SMI, this study examines violence risk factors of N = 278 veterans with SMI. In multivariate modeling, violence by veterans with SMI was associated with head injury, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, and homelessness. Results support the v

[Does leisure time cause illness? Leisure time behavior and its sequelae].

Most people in West Germany (and elsewhere) equate leisure time with joy of living, relaxation and with "having fun", and dismiss any idea of disease or accident almost like heresy. Such lines of thought are far removed from reality. In fact, every third inhabitant of West Germany needs medical care at least once in five years because of health damage during his or her holidays or during leisure-time or sports activities, or health injury sustained while travelling or staying in foreign countries. Travellers' diseases are among the most frequent leisure-time ailments. The "dream of a holiday"

The right of falling ill. On pathological health behavior.

There are people who never permit themselves to fall ill. This negative illness is called by the present author: counter-hypochondriasis. Several defense mechanisms in counter-hypochondriasis are described, especially in relation to infantile roots. Pathological health is considered as a neurotic symptom formation in which disorders in object relationship are all-important.

The underexamined association between posttraumatic stress disorder, medical illness and suicidal behavior.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is concerning not only because of the severity and chronicity of its symptoms - including distressing nightmares, flashbacks, anxiety attacks and maladaptive patterns of avoidant and nearly paranoid behavior - but also because of the wide spectrum of clinical and social impairments it is tightly associated with. The most striking example of clinical morbidity associated with PTSD is the well-known increase in the risk of suicidal behavior. Given that PTSD and medical illnesses increase the likelihood of suicide separately and independently, it is reasonable

Exploring the intergenerational transmission of illness behavior: from observations to experimental intervention.

BACKGROUND: Functional abdominal pain (FAP) of childhood is characterized by, among other things, pain with no known physiological cause, and family patterns of related disorders have been reported. PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to trace the development of one FAP research program and highlight some of its key findings from observations of interaction patterns to intervention studies designed to test outcomes of altering these patterns. METHODS: Studies summarized include observational and experimental research. RESULTS: Parental response to child pain behaviors appears to be a key

The relationship of childhood physical and sexual abuse to adult illness behavior.

A sample of 275 undergraduate subjects reported (i) their history of sexual and physical abuse in childhood and (ii) their health care utilization, somatization, and hypochondriasis as an adult. Physical and sexual abuse were recalled by largely separate groups, physical abuse predominating in males and sexual abuse in females. Both types of abuse were followed by a greater number of hospital admissions and surgical procedures in adulthood. Although sexual, and especially physical, abuse were associated with recall of emotionally disturbed parenting, this could not explain their influence on h

Noise sensitivity: Symptoms, health status, illness behavior and co-occurring environmental sensitivities.

Epidemiological evidence on the symptomatic profile, health status and illness behavior of people with subjective sensitivity to noise is still scarce. Also, it is unknown to what extent noise sensitivity co-occurs with other environmental sensitivities such as multi-chemical sensitivity and sensitivity to electromagnetic fields (EMF). A cross-sectional study performed in the Netherlands, combining self-administered questionnaires and electronic medical records of non-specific symptoms (NSS) registered by general practitioners (GP) allowed us to explore this further. The study sample consisted

HIV risk behavior among adults with severe mental illness: a systematic review.

Adults with severe mental illness (SMI) have been disproportionately affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This systematic review of the empirical literature on SMI documents the prevalence and correlates of HIV risk behaviors, discusses clinical implications for HIV prevention, and recommends directions for future research. Prevalence rates of HIV risk behaviors were estimated using weighted means, and findings on correlates were synthesized. Across reviewed studies (N=52), the majority of adults with SMI were sexually active, and many engaged in risk behaviors associated with HIV transmission (

Health effects of the Chernobyl disaster: illness or illness behavior? A comparative general health survey in two former Soviet regions.

Results are described of a general health survey (n = 3044) that was conducted 6.5 years after the Chernobyl accident in 1986 in a seriously contaminated region in Belarus and a socioeconomically comparable, but unaffected, region in the Russian Federation. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether there are differences in the general health status of the inhabitants of the two regions that may be attributed to the Chernobyl disaster. A broad-based population sample from each of these regions was studied using a variety of self-report questionnaires. A subsample (n = 449) was further

The Relationship Between and Correlates of Problematic Sexual Behavior and Major Mental Illness.

While research has consistently found that general distress and psychopathology are not predictive of sexual recidivism, examination of specific syndromes and their relationship to offending has revealed a potentially more complicated relationship. One proposed mechanism for the mixed findings with respect to major mental illness and sexual offending may be the confound of neurological injury. As identified in Mann et al. (2010) work on psychologically meaningful risk factors, mental illness represents an area in need of more study given the indirect influence it may exert on risk. To this end

Illness beliefs and walking behavior after revascularization for intermittent claudication: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) are recommended to increase physical activity to reduce cardiovascular risk. Vascular intervention (surgery or angioplasty) treats the symptom (intermittent claudication), but not the underlying cardiovascular disease. This study aims to explore the beliefs and physical activity behavior of patients with PAD who have received vascular intervention. METHODS: Twenty participants who had received a vascular intervention for intermittent claudication between 6 months and 2 years previously participated in semistructured interviews. The interv

Behavior problems in children and adolescents with chronic physical illness: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the risk of emotional and behavioral problems among children with a chronic physical illness. METHODS: Random-effects meta-analysis was computed to integrate the results of 569 studies that used the Child Behavior Checklist, Youth Self Report, and the Teacher Report Form. RESULTS: Young people with a chronic physical illness have higher levels of internalizing (g = .47 standard mean difference), externalizing (g = .22) and total behavior problems (g = .42) than healthy peers. The largest differences were found in parental ratings and the weakest differences in adolescen

Abnormal illness behavior of patients with functional somatic symptoms: relation to psychiatric disorders.

Functional somatic symptoms are highly associated with hypochondriasis, anxiety, and depressive disorders. Despite the absence of an organic disorder, underlying psychological distress of patients with functional somatic symptoms may result in abnormal illness behavior such as inadequate treatment seeking or overuse of medical services. Using the Illness Behavior Questionnaire (IBQ), we examined the illness behavior of Japanese patients visiting a general medicine clinic whose physical symptoms were considered functional. We used the General Health Questionnaire-30 to classify patients with fu

Which behavioral regulations predict physical activity and sedentary behavior in people with mental illness?

BACKGROUND: Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is beneficial for health, and reducing sedentary behavior (SB) is recommended in international guidelines. People with mental illnesses are at higher risk of preventable diseases than the general population, partly attributable to lower MVPA and higher SB. Self-determination theory provides a framework for understanding how motivation regulates behavior. This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of different forms of motivation for physical activity (amotivation, controlled, autonomous) to MVPA and SB in people with mental illnesses

Depression and vaccination behavior in patients with chronic physical illness - A cross-sectional survey.

OBJECTIVE: Chronically ill are vulnerable to vaccine preventable infections. Consequently, their vaccination behavior is highly relevant. Depressive comorbidities are frequent in these patients. Furthermore, these patients are mainly diagnosed, treated and vaccinated in primary care. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the associations between depression and vaccination behavior (COVID-19 and influenza) in adult chronically ill primary care patients. METHODS: In a cross-sectional survey, we examined depression (PHQ9), psychological antecedents of vaccinations (Confidence and Constraints), heal

Multiple risk-behavior profiles of smokers with serious mental illness and motivation for change.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) are dying on average 25 years prematurely. The leading causes are chronic preventable diseases. In the context of a tobacco-treatment trial, this exploratory study examined the behavioral risk profiles of adults with SMI to identify broader interventional needs. METHOD: Recruited from five acute inpatient psychiatry units, participants were 693 adult smokers (recruitment rate = 76%, 50% male, 45% Caucasian, age M = 39, 49% had income < $10,000) diagnosed with mood disorders (71%), substance-use disorders (63%), posttraumatic stress diso

Psychiatric and psychosocial correlates of sexual risk behavior among adults with severe mental illness.

Persons with severe mental illness (SMI) are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. This study examined multivariate correlates of sexual risk among 152 adults with SMI receiving outpatient psychiatric treatment. Structured interviews assessed psychiatric, psychosocial, and behavioral risk factors. The majority was sexually active (65%), and many reported unprotected intercourse (73%), multiple partners (45%), and sex trading (21%) in the past year. Logistic regression models found that sexual behaviors were differentially associated with non-psychotic disorder, psychiatric symptoms, substan
