A principal components analysis of Rorschach aggression and hostility variables.

We examined the structure of 9 Rorschach variables related to hostility and aggression (Aggressive Movement, Morbid, Primary Process Aggression, Secondary Process Aggression, Aggressive Content, Aggressive Past, Strong Hostility, Lesser Hostility) in a sample of medical students (N= 225) from the Johns Hopkins Precursors Study (The Johns Hopkins University, 1999). Principal components analysis revealed 2 dimensions accounting for 58% of the total variance. These dimensions extended previous findings for a 2-component model of Rorschach aggressive imagery that had been identified using just 5 o

Psychotherapeutic Techniques for Dyspnea in Cancer and Chronic Illness: Systematic Review.

CONTEXT: Psychotherapeutic interventions show promise for managing dyspnea in patients with cancer and other serious illnesses, but evidence synthesis has been limited by substantial heterogeneity. Additionally, the characteristics of interventional delivery remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review examined the characteristics of psychotherapeutic techniques-mindful breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, and guided imagery-to inform standardization, clinical application, and digital development. METHODS: We searched PubMed, CINAHL, CENTRAL, and Scopus from

Mechanisms of therapeutic change after psychedelic treatment in OCD.

Novel treatments are required for the 30-50% of individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) who remain resistant to first-line pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments. Recent pilot data suggest benefit from psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) and from imagery rescripting (ImRs). We explore psychological mechanisms of change underpinning both interventions that appear to allow for reprocessing of negative emotions and core beliefs associated with past aversive events. A next critical step in PAP is the development of psychotherapeutic frameworks grounded in theory. We prop

Interventions Targeting Negative Mental Imagery in Social Anxiety: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Characteristics and Outcomes.

Psychological treatment for social anxiety disorder (SAD) has been found to be less effective than for other anxiety disorders. Targeting the vivid and distressing negative mental images typically experienced by individuals with social anxiety could possibly enhance treatment effectiveness. To provide both clinicians and researchers with an overview of current applications, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the possibilities and effects of imagery-based interventions that explicitly target negative images in (sub)clinical social anxiety. Based on a prespecified literat

Comparison of electromagnetic guided imagery to standard confirmatory methods for ascertaining nasogastric tube placement in children.

PURPOSE: Evaluate the accuracy of an electromagnetic device (EMD) guided nasogastric tube (NGT) placement compared with standard confirmation methods. A secondary aim was to determine if EMD guided NGT placement would avert potential pulmonary misplacements of the tube. DESIGN AND METHODS: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) patients were enrolled if they had an NGT order during the study period of April 2014 through December 2016. Patients were included if they were one through 18 years of age. An EMD trained nurse inserted the NGT using EMD guidance. An insertion questionnaire, confirming

Guided imagery for treating hypertension in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension (high blood pressure) in pregnancy carries a high risk of maternal morbidity and mortality. Although antihypertensive drugs are commonly used, they have adverse effects on mothers and fetuses. Guided imagery is a non-pharmacological technique that has the potential to lower blood pressure among pregnant women with hypertension. Guided imagery is a mind-body therapy that involves the visualisation of various mental images to facilitate relaxation and reduction in blood pressure. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of guided imagery as a non-pharmacological treatment of

The effectiveness of progressive muscle relaxation and interactive guided imagery as a pain-reducing intervention in advanced cancer patients: A multicentre randomised controlled non-pharmacological trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Interactive guided imagery (IGI) and progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) are complementary therapies with a recognised positive effect on cancer pain relief. This multicentre randomised controlled trial was designed to assess the adjuvant effect of PMR-IGI in alleviating pain in a sample of hospice patients with terminal cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 104 patients were randomised to two groups. Group A patients (n = 53) were administered the Revised Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS-r) and the numerical rating scale (NRS) for pain immediately prior to

[Imagery in psychosis: EMDR as a new intervention in the treatment of delusions and auditory hallucinations].

BACKGROUND: Historically, psychotherapy has focused on the treatment of patients' verbal representations (thoughts) and has proved particularly successful in the cognitive behavioural treatment of psychosis. However, there is mounting evidence that visual representations (imagery) play an important role in the onset and maintenance of psychiatric disorders, including psychotic symptoms. There are indications that heightened emotionality and vividness of visual representations are associated with severity of psychotic experiences. This may imply that a reduction in the vividness and emotionalit

Developing a Compassionate Internal Supervisor: Compassion-Focused Therapy for Trainee Therapists.

UNLABELLED: The concept of an 'internal supervisor' has been used in psychotherapy to describe the way in which the supervisory relationship is internalized and utilized by the supervisee. This research explores the possibility, and potential benefit, of training therapists to develop a 'compassionate internal supervisor'. A training programme was developed for trainee cognitive-behavioural therapists using adapted versions of compassion-focused therapy interventions. The training focused on guided imagery exercises and reflective practices undertaken for a 4-week period. Seven trainee cogniti

Schema Therapy for Voice Hearers: A Case Series Study.

Distressing voice-hearing experiences are frequently characterised by hostility, criticism and abuse and emerging evidence suggests that these experiences may reflect internalised dysfunctional schema modes, particularly the Punitive Parent mode. Yet no research has evaluated a schema therapy intervention explicitly targeting schema modes. This naturalistic case series evaluated schema therapy for voices (STv) within a routine specialist psychology service. Twenty transdiagnostic voice hearers started formulation-driven STv comprising approximately 20-30 individual sessions integrating chair-w

Narrative processes in schema therapy: Theoretical background, clinical methods, and case illustrations.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a mechanism-oriented framework that specifies how narrative processes operate within schema therapy, detailing a core sequence of change (activation of emotionally salient autobiographical memories, shift in narrative position, emergence of corrective internal voices, and reconsolidation of meaning) through which narrative-based interventions support identity-level change in individual and group settings. METHODS: This paper adopts a theory-building approach combining a narrative review with an interpretive qualitative analysis of clinical case illustrations from schema

The Effects of Different Brain Regions on fNIRS-based Task-state Detection in Speech Imagery.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) based on speech imagery can decode users' verbal intent and help people with motor disabilities communicate naturally. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a commonly used brain signal acquisition method. Asynchronous BCI can response to control commands at any time, which provides great convenience for users. Task state detection, defined as identifying whether user starts or continues covertly articulating, plays an important role in speech imagery BCIs. To better distinguish task state from idle state during speech imagery, this work used fNIRS sig

A practical guide to reducing preoperative and intraoperative patient anxiety in dermatologic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Dermatologists perform a variety of procedures including excisions, biopsies, and other minor surgical procedures. Patients can experience anxiety in anticipation of their surgeries or may develop anxiety during the procedure. Since most dermatologic procedures occur with the patient awake and alert, the physician can offer comforting methods to alleviate some of that anxiety. AIMS: We wanted to provide a review of available methods that dermatologists can use to reduce patient anxiety. MATERIALS & METHODS: In this paper, we review the current literature on methods that can be us

Exploring the phenomenon of intrusive mental imagery after suicide bereavement: A qualitative interview study in a British sample.

INTRODUCTION: Each year an estimated 48 million people are bereaved by suicide internationally. Following traumatic events, experiencing intrusive mental imagery relating to the trauma is not uncommon. This phenomenological study aimed to explore the nature, experience and impact of intrusive mental imagery after suicide bereavement. METHODS: Semi-structured interview transcripts with 18 adults bereaved by the suicide of a close contact were analysed using thematic analysis to explore patterns and themes within the data, with particular consideration of the content of images, how people exper

Motor Imagery Multi-Tasks Classification for BCIs Using the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 Board and the EEGNet Network.

Nowadays, Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) still captivate large interest because of multiple advantages offered in numerous domains, explicitly assisting people with motor disabilities in communicating with the surrounding environment. However, challenges of portability, instantaneous processing time, and accurate data processing remain for numerous BCI system setups. This work implements an embedded multi-tasks classifier based on motor imagery using the EEGNet network integrated into the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 card. Therefore, two strategies are developed to select the most discriminant channels

EEG characteristic investigation of the sixth-finger motor imagery and optimal channel selection for classification.

Objective.Supernumerary robotic limbs are body augmentation robotic devices by adding extra limbs or fingers to the human body different from the traditional wearable robotic devices such as prosthesis and exoskeleton. We proposed a novel motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigm based on the sixth-finger which imagines controlling the extra finger movements. The goal of this work is to investigate the electromyographic (EEG) characteristics and the application potential of MI-based BCI systems based on the new imagination paradigm (the sixth finger MI).Approach.Fourteen

Is it magic? An exploratory randomized controlled trial comparing imagery rescripting and cognitive restructuring in the treatment of depression.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether working with intrusive images and the use of imagery processes would be beneficial to treating depression, an imagery-based intervention (imagery rescripting, IR) was compared with a more commonly used verbal-based technique (cognitive restructuring, CR). The study aimed not only to test the efficacy of IR as a brief modular treatment for depression, but to explore whether such experiential use of imagery would alleviate the abstract-evaluative, verbal processes of rumination and worry. METHODS: Forty-one participants diagnosed with clinical d
