Comparison of glycopyrrolate and atropine in ameliorating the adverse effects of imidocarb dipropionate in horses.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Imidocarb, an effective treatment for piroplasmosis, may cause colic and diarrhoea in horses. Atropine and glycopyrrolate are anticholinergics that could reduce the adverse effects of imidocarb. However, atropine and glycopyrrolate inhibit gastrointestinal motility, potentially causing ileus and colic. OBJECTIVES: To compare glycopyrrolate and atropine in ameliorating the adverse effects of imidocarb dipropionate in horses and to determine the effect of combinations of these drugs on the gastrointestinal tract. METHODS: A blinded, randomised, crossover study was

Curative effects of the antipiroplasms amicarbalide and imidocarb on Trypanosoma brucei infection in mice.

The babesicides imidocarb and amicarbalide, which have structural similarities to the antitrypanosomatid diamidines, proved active against Trypanosoma brucei mouse infections: both cured infections when doses were administered daily for 3 days 24 h post-inoculation (curative dose imidocarb, 10 mg/kg; amicarbalide, 25 mg/kg). Mice were considered cured after survival 30 days longer than untreated infected controls, with no trypanosomes present in blood or cerebrospinal fluid smears. Both agents also cured when administered 48 and 72 h after challenge with T. brucei and prolonged the lives of an

Preliminary observations on the combined use of imidocarb and Babesia blood vaccine in cattle.

Imidocarb was used by three different methods to control reactions in cattle induced by a Babesia blood vaccine produced in South Africa. Simultaneous administration of 0,15 mg/kg imidocarb and Babesia bovis vaccine gave satisfactory control. When the vaccine was given seven days prior to the imidocarb treatment a dose between 0,15 mg/kg and 0,6 mg/kg imidocarb was required for effective control. A combined B. bovis and Babesia bigemina vaccine given at 21 and again 61 days after a 3 mg/kg imidocarb treatment allowed the development of an adequate premunity to both these parasites.

Comparative efficacy of buparvaquone and imidocarb in inhibiting the in vitro growth of Babesia bovis.

INTRODUCTION: B. bovis is an apicomplexan parasite responsible for bovine babesiosis, a tick-borne disease with a worldwide impact. The disease remains inefficiently controlled, and few effective drugs, including imidocarb dipropionate (ID), are currently available in endemic areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether buparvaquone (BPQ), a drug currently used to treat cattle infected with the Babesia-related Theileria spp. parasites, could be active against Babesia parasites. Herein, we compared the effect of ID and BPQ on B. bovis growth in vitro erythrocyte culture. METHODS:

Massive hepatic necrosis associated with accidental imidocarb dipropionate toxicosis in a dog.

A 7-year-old dog was accidentally given 10 times the recommended dose of imidocarb dipropionate for suspected babesiosis. Twenty-four hours later, the dog developed severe depression, tachycardia with premature ventricular contractions, cyanosis and hind limb tremors. Shortly thereafter, the dog collapsed and died. Death was due to massive hepatic necrosis.

A comparison of the efficacy of imidocarb dipropionate and tetracycline hydrochloride in the treatment of canine ehrlichiosis.

A comparison of the efficacy of imidocarb dipropionate solution and tetracycline hydrochloride in the treatment of naturally occurring ehrlichiosis of dogs presented at the University of Nairobi small animal clinic was carried out. Five to 7 mg per kg imidocarb dipropionate given intramuscularly twice at an interval of 14 days was as effective as 14 daily, oral doses of 66 mg per kg tetracycline hydrochloride in alleviating the clinical signs of disease. Imidocarb eliminated the infection in 81 per cent of the cases whereas tetracyclines cleared only 25 per cent as judged by cell culture isola

Imidocarb dipropionate clears persistent Babesia caballi infection with elimination of transmission potential.

Antimicrobial treatment of persistent infection to eliminate transmission risk represents a specific challenge requiring compelling evidence of complete pathogen clearance. The limited repertoire of antimicrobial agents targeted at protozoal parasites magnifies this challenge. Using Babesia caballi as both a model and a specific apicomplexan pathogen for which evidence of the elimination of transmission risk is required for international animal movement, we tested whether a high-dose regimen of imidocarb dipropionate cleared infection from persistently infected asymptomatic horses and/or elimi

Treatment Efficacy of Imidocarb Dipropionate in Saanen Goats Experimentally Infected with Babesia aktasi.

Babesia aktasi is a recently discovered species that is highly prevalent in native goats in Türkiye's Mediterranean region. Although it does not induce clinical disease in local breeds, it causes severe illness in Saanen goats, manifesting with high fever, anemia, hemoglobinuria, and jaundice. Imidocarb dipropionate (IMDP) has been reported to be therapeutically effective against Babesia species. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of IMDP and its ability to eliminate the parasite in experimentally infected Saanen goats. Twelve goats were assigned to treatment and control gro

Diminazene aceturate and imidocarb dipropionate-based combination therapy for babesiosis - a new paradigm.

In the present study, the effect of a combination therapy consisting of diminazene aceturate (DA) and imidocarb dipropionate (ID) on the in vitro growth of several parasitic piroplasmids, and on Babesia microti in BALB/c mice was evaluated using a fluorescence-based SYBR Green I test. We evaluated the structural similarities between the regularly used antibabesial medications, DA and ID, and the recently found antibabesial drugs, pyronaridine tetraphosphate, atovaquone, and clofazimine, using atom pair fingerprints (APfp). The Chou-Talalay approach was used to determine the interactions betwee

Effect of imidocarb dipropionate prophylaxis on the infectivity and immunogenicity of a Babesia bovis vaccine in cattle.

Imidocarb dipropionate (IDP), a potent prophylactic drug against Babesia bovis infections in cattle, was tested for its effect on the infectivity and immunogenicity of a live B. bovis vaccine marketed in Australia. At the recommended prophylactic dose rate of 3 mg/kg, IDP suppressed infectivity of the vaccine for at least 6 weeks. The vaccine infected all cattle inoculated either 8 weeks after treatment with 3 mg/kg, or 4 weeks after treatment with the recommended therapeutic dose of 1.2 mg/kg. These infections were, however, partially suppressed and the level of immunity to a subsequent heter

Efficacy, toxicity and metabolism of imidocarb dipropionate in the treatment of Babesia ovis infection in sheep.

An intramuscular dose of 1.2 mg kg-1 of imidocarb dipropionate (IMDP) was effective in controlling fatal infections with Babesia ovis in sheep. The sheep were infected by the intravenous injection of sheep blood containing B ovis. A severe recrudescence of infection occurred in most sheep 10 to 14 days after therapy but this could be controlled by a second dose of 1.2 mg kg-1 IMDP. Studies on the toxicology, residues and metabolism of IMDP showed this to be a safe dosage regimen. Transient or mild signs of toxicity were seen at 2.4 and 4.8 mg kg-1 IMDP. Severe toxicity was observed in sheep tr

Crystalline inclusions in erythrocytes parasitized with Babesia equi following treatment of ponies with imidocarb.

Four splenectomized Welsh ponies were infected with Babesia equi. Two ponies were treated with imidocarb dipropionate, and two were not treated. By light microscopic examination, 1% to 2% of the parasitized erythrocytes of treated ponies contained crystalline inclusions. The crystals were rectangular, diamond, or burr shaped. They occupied most of the erythrocytic cytoplasm, and, as a result, the remainder of the pale staining cytoplasm was inconspicuous in Wright-Giemsa-stained blood smears. The size and shape of intraerythrocytic inclusions varied when examined by electron microscopy, but in
