Effects of supplemental vitamin C and chromium on metabolic and hormonal responses, antioxidant status, and tonic immobility reactions of transported broiler chickens.

Three hundred female broilers were assigned to five groups with six replicates and were fed with either a basal diet (two control groups) or the basal diet supplemented with 800-mg vitamin C/kg (Vit C group), 1,200-μg Cr(+3) from chromium (Cr) chloride/kg (Cr group) or 800-mg Vit C and 1,200-μg Cr(+3) from Cr chloride/kg (Vit C + Cr group) from 42 to 49 days of age. Treatments did not affect performance. Transport decreased insulin level in the control and Cr groups and increased glucose/insulin (G/I) ratio in the groups. The level of insulin was higher in the Vit C + Cr group than those in th

Activation of corticotropin-releasing factor receptors from the basolateral or central amygdala increases the tonic immobility response in guinea pigs: an innate fear behavior.

The tonic immobility (TI) behavior is an innate response associated with extreme threat situations such as a predator attack. Several studies have provided evidence suggesting an important role for corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) in the regulation of the endocrine system, defensive behaviors and behavioral responses to stress. TI has been shown to be positively correlated with the basal plasma levels of corticosterone. CRF receptors and neurons that are immunoreactive to CRF are found in many cerebral regions, especially in the amygdaloid complex. Previous reports have demonstrated the in

Synthesis of defense response characteristics.

In previous chapters, the available theories and experimental findings related to animals' defense responses have been reported and discussed in detail. This chapter reports their comprehensive synthesis, considering the main immobility-related responses in defense. Within the same modality (i.e., immobility) different kinds of immobility may in fact correspond to different functions and motivations, as proved by their neurobiological correlates profile.

Environmental, ecological and methodological factors of Tonic Immobility (TI) modulation.

Modulation of Tonic Immobility (TI) concerns environmental and individual factors. TI is modulated by processes of habituation and sensitization. In poikilotherm frog and lizard, TI duration is much shorter at usual environmental temperatures and is potentiated at higher or lower temperatures, as the last resource for survival. During ontogeny, age may differentially affect TI susceptibility to the induction procedures, as in the case of newborn ectothermic and older endothermic rabbits. TI duration displays a daily rhythm, with longer TI in the night. Its resistance to habituation indicates t

Responses to artificial selection for locomotor activity: A focus on death feigning in red flour beetle.

Whole-organism performance, including locomotor activity, is an important fitness trait in many animals. Locomotor activity is often classified into sprint speed and locomotor endurance and differences in sprint speed and locomotor endurance affect on other traits such as life-history traits. Previous studies found that locomotor endurance, sprint speed and brain dopamine (DA) levels are correlated with artificial selection for death feigning (an anti-predator behaviour that we refer to as 'death-feigning syndrome') in some insect species. Thus, if the syndrome has a genetic basis, death feign

The impact of tonic immobility reaction on the prognosis of posttraumatic stress disorder.

Tonic immobility is the last defense reaction to entrapment by a predator. In humans, peritraumatic tonic immobility was correlated with PTSD severity and poor response to treatment. This study compared the role of peritraumatic dissociation, panic physical symptoms and tonic immobility as predictors of response to standard pharmacotherapy for PTSD. Thirty-six PTSD patients underwent a naturalistic pharmacological treatment. The Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist - Civilian Version (PCL-C) and the Clinical Global Impressions Severity of Illness item scores (CGI-S) were employed at baselin

Dominance and inheritance patterns of mobility and death feigning in beetle strains selected for moving activity.

Reciprocal crossing of different strains is a suitable method to investigate the dominance and inheritance of a focal trait. Herein, we performed reciprocal crossing among strains of Tribolium castaneum exhibiting a genetically high (H strain) and low (L strain) moving activity and investigated the related heritable factors in the F1 and F2 generations. We also evaluated death-feigning behavior, which negatively responded to artificial selection for moving activity in T. castaneum. The results obtained for the F1 generation suggest that low moving activity and short duration of death feigning

Neurophysiological mechanisms involved in tonic immobility (TI).

This chapter summarizes the main neurophysiological characteristics of tonic immobility (TI), in many susceptible species of mammals and birds. During TI, cortical EEG shows high voltage slow waves whose amount is affected by events preceding TI induction and is positively correlated with TI duration. The pattern of hippocampal activity helps to predict TI onset and TI termination. Both polysynaptic flexor and monosynaptic heteronymous reflexes are depressed independently from the EEG activity. Brain metabolism, signaled by glycogen mobilization and glucose utilization, indicates a reduced neu

Genetic parameters for tonic immobility, body weight, and morphological traits of the red-winged tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens).

This study was carried out to estimate genetic parameters for morphology, body weight, and tonic immobility traits in the red-winged tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens). Information on 690 birds was used and genetic parameters were estimated using Bayesian methods under a multi-trait animal model. The following traits were considered in this study: tarsal length (TL), bill length (BL), wing length (WL), head width (HW), bill width (BW), mature weight (MW), weight at 90 days (W90), and tonic immobility (TI). The heritability showed estimates between 0.15 for wing length and 0.56 for bill length. Pos

Bispectral index reveals death-feigning behavior in a red kite (Milvus milvus).

Red kites (Milvus milvus) are birds of prey known to feign death in the presence of humans. An adult wild red kite was anesthetized with isoflurane for coelioscopy. During surgery, heart rate and respiratory rate ranged from 240 to 260 beats per minute and from 16 to 28 breaths rates per minute, respectively. Pupil and corneal reflexes remained present, and body temperature was maintained at 40.4 degrees C (104.7 degrees F). Suppression ratio was 0 during the anesthetic episode. The bispectral index was 44 immediately after intubation, ranged from 44 to 57 during maintenance of anesthesia, and

Tonic Immobility is Associated with PTSD Symptoms in Traumatized Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Growing evidence suggests that peritraumatic tonic immobility, an involuntary defensive response that involves extreme physical immobility and the perceived inability to escape, is a significant predictor of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology. However, this issue has not been specifically addressed in adolescents. Here, we investigated whether tonic immobility response experienced during the worst childhood or adolescent trauma is associated with PTSD symptom severity in a non-clinical student sample. METHODS: The sample was composed of students in 9th grade who wer

Tonic immobility in terrestrial isopods: intraspecific and interspecific variability.

Many arthropods, including terrestrial isopods, are capable of entering a state of tonic immobility upon a mechanical disturbance. Here we compare the responses to mechanical stimulation in three terrestrial isopods Balloniscus glaber, Balloniscus sellowii and Porcellio dilatatus. We applied three stimuli in a random order and recorded whether each individual was responsive (i.e. showed tonic immobility) or not and the duration of the response. In another trial we related the time needed to elicit tonic immobility and the duration of response of each individual. Balloniscus sellowii was the le

Tonic immobility triggered by COVID-19-related trauma is associated with long-term PTSD symptoms.

During the COVID-19 pandemic healthcare workers were repeatedly exposed to traumatic experiences. Facing life-threatening events and repeated exposure to traumatic duty-related situations may cause posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While tonic immobility has been considered a key vulnerability factor for PTSD, little is known about this relationship in the long term. In this study, we aimed to determine whether peritraumatic tonic immobility triggered by COVID-19-related trauma predicts PTSD symptom severity six to twelve months later. We conducted an online longitudinal survey using the P

Low cognitive competence as a vulnerability factor for behavioral despair in rats.

Elucidating the multi-faceted relationship between cognitive competence and affective states is a major pursuit in behavioral sciences. Mood disorders constitute a good research model for this question, as cognitive impairment may accompany clinical depression and persist after full remission. This suggests cognitive dysfunction as an etiological factor of depression, rather than an epiphenomenon. Complementing clinical studies, animal models utilizing well-controlled, systematic paradigms are essential to elucidate the complex relationship between cognitive competence and affective states. Sound repetition rate controls the duration of tonic immobility in chicks (Gallus gallus).

Tonic Immobility (TI) functions as anti-predator defense. Its duration depends on cues signaling predator proximity. One such cue includes alarm calls from conspecifics and non-conspecifics. This study aimed to determine the cue within alarm calls that controls TI duration. We induced TI in chicks (Gallus gallus) and found that their TI durations increased in the presence of adult conspecific alarm calls, non-conspecific alarm calls, and synthetic sounds made of white noise set to the repetition rate found in natural alarm calls. Moreover, chicks did not increase their TI durations when exposed

Immobility reactions under threat: A contribution to human defensive cascade and PTSD.

Violence exacts a burden on public health. Gun violence is a major trigger for motor defensive reactions in humans and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is its main psychiatric sequela. However, studies of the human defensive cascade, especially the motor reactions, are at an early stage. This review focuses on studies that employ stabilometry, a methodology that assesses whole body motor reactions, to address defensive behaviors to violence-related threats. Special attention is given to three reactions: "attentive immobility", "immobility under attack" and "tonic immobility", with emphasi

Why fake death? Environmental and genetic control of tonic immobility in larval lacewings (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae).

Tonic immobility is a passive antipredator strategy employed late in the predation sequence that may decrease individual mortality in prey animals. Here, we investigate how energetic state and genetic predisposition influence antipredator decision-making in green lacewing larvae, Chrysoperla plorabunda (Fitch), using simulated predatory encounters. We demonstrate that tonic immobility is a plastic response influenced by energetic resource limitation. Larvae exposed to 1 or 2 days of food deprivation initiate tonic immobility more often and with less physical provocation than individuals fed ad

Tonic immobility during sexual assault - a common reaction predicting post-traumatic stress disorder and severe depression.

INTRODUCTION: Active resistance is considered to be the 'normal' reaction during rape. However, studies have indicated that similar to animals, humans exposed to extreme threat may react with a state of involuntary, temporary motor inhibition known as tonic immobility. The aim of the present study was to assess the occurrence of tonic immobility during rape and subsequent post-traumatic stress disorder and severe depression. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Tonic immobility at the time of the assault was assessed using the Tonic Immobility Scale in 298 women who had visited the Emergency clinic for rape
