Catch-up immunization programs will eliminate measles threat for most schoolchildren.

The threat of measles will be eliminated for 72% of Canadian schoolchildren this spring as seven provinces/territories establish routine two-dose schedules for measles-mumps-rubella vaccination, including five jurisdictions that are undertaking universal catch-up immunization programs. The initiatives move the country closer to its commitment to eradicate measles by the year 2000.

Optimizing the acceptability, effectiveness and costs of immunization programs: the Quebec experience.

In Canada, publicly funded immunization programs are a provincial/territorial responsibility. In the province of Quebec, much effort has been devoted to optimize the acceptability, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of publicly funded immunization programs for children during the last 20 years. The aim of this article is to describe how programs are planned, implemented and evaluated and to identify key factors that contribute to the success of this enterprise. A comprehensive framework was developed for the evaluation of new vaccines and new programs in a societal perspective. It is used by

Impact of measles supplementary immunization activities on reaching children missed by routine programs.

BACKGROUND: Measles supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) are vaccination campaigns that supplement routine vaccination programs with a recommended second dose opportunity to children of different ages regardless of their previous history of measles vaccination. They are conducted every 2-4 years and over a few weeks in many low- and middle-income countries. While SIAs have high vaccination coverage, it is unclear whether they reach the children who miss their routine measles vaccine dose. Determining who is reached by SIAs is vital to understanding their effectiveness, as well as measu

CHIP shots: association between the State Children's Health Insurance Programs and immunization rates.

OBJECTIVE: The Balanced Budget Act of 1997 established the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which makes health insurance available to children in near-poor families who are ineligible for Medicaid. SCHIP mandates that all state plans cover the cost and administration of childhood vaccines. Whether SCHIP has narrowed immunization coverage rates between near-poor and nonpoor children is unknown. The objective of this study was to use data from the National Immunization Survey from 1995 to 2002 to analyze changes in immunization coverage rates among poor, near-poor, and nonpoor

Epidemiological features of rotavirus infection in Caracas, Venezuela: implications for rotavirus immunization programs.

The epidemiological features of rotavirus infection may be quite relevant for evaluation of the performance of a rotavirus vaccine in different settings, as well as for monitoring its impact during vaccination under routine conditions. This article describes some important issues regarding rotavirus epidemiology in Venezuela, where major field trials of rotavirus vaccine have been carried out. Rotaviruses was significantly more frequently observed in inpatient (43%) than in outpatient (21%) consultations for diarrhea in infants and young children. There was a high prevalence of rotavirus illne

Impact of immunization programs on 11 childhood vaccine-preventable diseases in China: 1950-2018.

To evaluate the achievements of China's immunization program between 1950 and 2018, we chose 11 vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) as representative notifiable diseases and used annual surveillance data obtained between 1950 and 2018 to derive disease incidence and mortality trends. Quasi-Poisson and polynomial regression models were used to estimate the impacts of specific vaccine programs, and life-table methods were used to calculate the loss of life expectancy, years of life lost, and loss of working years. The total notification number for the 11 VPDs was 211,866,000 from 1950 to 2018. T

A critique of criteria for evaluating vaccines for inclusion in mandatory school immunization programs.

Several new vaccines for children and young adults have been introduced recently and now appear on the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices' recommended childhood and adolescent immunization schedule (meningococcal, rotavirus, human papillomavirus). As new vaccines are introduced, states face complex decisions regarding which vaccines to fund and which vaccines to require for school or child care entry. This complexity is evidenced by the current debate surrounding the human papillomavirus vaccine. We present a critique to the approach and criteria for evaluating vaccines for inclusion

Vaccination compliance of selected childhood immunization programs and the socio-determinant factors in Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Adherence to full vaccination is important in preventing childhood diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of compliance to full vaccination and identify the socio-cultural factors associated with full vaccination compliance in children. METHODOLOGY: The socioeconomic variables associated with each of the four binary dependent variables of whether or not a child is fully vaccinated against tetanus, BCG, measles, and pentavalent were determined using logistic regression. RESULTS: While compliance to full tetanus and BCG vaccinations was > 60% at the national le

College health administrator's perceptions of the impacts of COVID-19 on college immunization programs.

College immunization policies vary. To evaluate the landscape of college immunization programs, we distributed a 45-item survey to college health administrators between July and September 2021. Items measured perceptions of institutionally recommended and required vaccines, enforcement strategies, barriers to vaccine uptake, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Of 566 invitations sent, only 66 college health administrators completed the survey (11.7% response rate). The majority of participating institutions (89%) required at least one vaccine, with measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) being the mo

The impact of immunization programs on 10 vaccine preventable diseases in Italy: 1900-2015.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination has determined a dramatic decline in morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases over the last century. However, low perceived risk of the infectious threat and increased concern about vaccines' safety led to a reduction in vaccine coverage, with increased risk of disease outbreaks. METHODS: Annual surveillance data of nationally communicable infectious diseases in Italy between 1900 and 2015 were used to derive trends in morbidity and mortality rates before and after vaccine introduction, focusing particularly on the effect of vaccination programs. [Health sector reform in Colombia and its effects on tuberculosis control and immunization programs].

This paper analyzes the effects of health reform in Colombia on public health programs at the local level, particularly the Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) and the tuberculosis control program. The research was developed in three health districts in two States by analysis of documents, direct observation, and longitudinal follow-up of the transition process. The health districts were unprepared for the change, resulting in insufficient technical skills among staff as well as lack of awareness of important elements in the new system, associated with a reduction in immunization coverage a

Integrating Neglected Tropical Disease and Immunization Programs: The Experiences of the Tanzanian Ministry of Health.

Global health practitioners are increasingly advocating for the integration of community-based health-care platforms as a strategy for increasing the coverage of programs, encouraging program efficiency, and promoting universal health-care goals. To leverage the strengths of compatible programs and avoid geographic and temporal duplications in efforts, the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare coordinated immunization and neglected tropical disease programs for the first time in 2014. Specifically, a measles and rubella supplementary vaccine campaign, mass drug administration (MDA) o
