Phytochemical screening and evaluating in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activity of 80% methanolic Impatiens rothii root extract.

Infectious diseases result in morbidity and mortality. The demand for medicinal plants is increasing worldwide due to antimicrobial resistance. The objective of this study was to test the plant chemicals and evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal activity of an 80% methanolic Impatiens rothii root extract. The cold maceration method was employed to obtain the crude extract from the roots of Impatiens rothii. The diameter of the inhibition zone was determined by agar well diffusion, and the minimum inhibitory concentration was determined by broth microdilution. As standard drugs, ciprofloxac

Sperm can't take the heat: Short-term temperature exposures compromise fertility of male bumble bees (Bombus impatiens).

Bumble bee (genus Bombus) populations are increasingly under threat from habitat fragmentation, pesticides, pathogens, and climate change. Climate change is likely a prime driver of bumble bee declines but the mechanisms by which changing climates alter local abundance, leading to shifts in geographic range are unclear. Heat tolerance is quite high in worker bumble bees (CTmax ∼ 48-55 °C), making it unlikely for them to experience these high temperatures, even with climate warming. However, the thermal tolerance of whole organisms often exceeds that of their gametes; many insects can be steril

Evaluation of antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of peptide Impatiens balsamina-M1 and Zinc oxide nanoparticles against Helicobacter pylori.

Helicobacter pylori is a common human pathogen associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. The bacterium’s ability to form biofilms and acquire antibiotic resistance, especially against clarithromycin and metronidazole, has considerably reduced the efficacy of conventional treatment. These difficulties highlight the urgent need for new antimicrobial strategies that can disrupt biofilms and combat antibiotic resistance. Antimicrobial peptides and nanoparticles have emerged as promising options in this context. The antibacterial and antibiofilm properties of Impatiens b

Investigating trade-offs between ovary activation and immune protein expression in bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) workers and queens.

Evidence for a trade-off between reproduction and immunity has manifested in many animal species, including social insects. However, investigations in social insect queens present a conundrum: new gynes of many social hymenopterans, such as bumble bees and ants, must first mate, then transition from being solitary to social as they establish their nests, thus experiencing confounding shifts in environmental conditions. Worker bumble bees offer an opportunity to investigate patterns of immune protein expression associated with ovary activation while minimizing extraneous environmental factors a

Cryopreservation of seminal vesicle derived spermatozoa from Bombus impatiens and Apis mellifera - Implications for artificial insemination of bumble bees.

This study evaluates the efficacy of a cryopreservation protocol for spermatozoa derived from the accessory testis of male Bombus impatiens. It is also the first report of successful cryopreservation of bumble bee spermatozoa. The spermatozoa viability was compared with the similarly treated honey bee spermatozoa derived from its accessory testis. The semen was frozen using a yolk-free non-activating buffer containing dimethyl sulphoxide and stored in liquid nitrogen for 24 h to ~14 days. Thereafter, the frozen samples were thawed rapidly and assessed by staining with live/dead differentiating

Physiological and growth responses of Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum) to elevated CO2 concentrations and infestation by fungus gnat (Bradysia impatiens).

Elevated CO2 (eCO2) levels can alter plant physiology by reducing stomatal density, weakening transpiration, enhancing photosynthesis, accelerating growth, increasing the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, and lowering nitrogen content. This study investigated the combined effects of eCO2 stress and Bradysia impatiens infestation on Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum) under controlled CO2 growth chamber conditions. A factorial experimental design was implemented, incorporating two CO2 concentration levels and three fungus gnat infestation intensities. The results revealed significant increases in leaf wid

Pollen Diet Diversity does not Affect Gut Bacterial Communities or Melanization in a Social and Solitary Bee Species.

Pollinators face many stressors, including reduced floral diversity. A low-diversity diet can impair organisms' ability to cope with additional stressors, such as pathogens, by altering the gut microbiome and/or immune function, but these effects are understudied for most pollinators. We investigated the impact of pollen diet diversity on two ecologically and economically important generalist pollinators, the social bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) and the solitary alfalfa leafcutter bee (Megachile rotundata). We experimentally tested the effect of one-, two-, or three-species pollen diets on gut

Seed dormancy cycling: A driver of germination timing in a facultative winter annual.

Timing of seed germination is critical for survival of annual plants in seasonal climates. We tested the hypothesis that seeds of the winter annual species Cardamine impatiens (Brassicaceae) "track" their thermal environment and synchronize germination with favorable growth conditions. We predicted that seeds buried in the field from maturity to autumn germinate best at autumn temperatures, while those buried from maturity to spring germinate best in early spring. We monitored seasonal changes in germinability by exhuming field-buried seeds monthly for 30 months and incubating them under labor

Tissue-specific distribution of cytotoxic triterpene saponins in three Red Sea sea cucumbers.

Sea cucumbers are widely exported from the Middle-East to East Asia being consumed as traditional food. Due to paucity of knowledge concerning biochemical analysis of Red Sea Holothurians, we studied the distribution of triterpene saponins in the external muscular body walls and internal visceral organs of three edible sea cucumbers of the Red Sea using LC-qTOF-MS/MS. Saponins in H. atra and Bohadschia vitiensis were generally localised in the walls whereas they showed higher relative abundance in the viscera of Holothuria impatiens.
