Linkages Between Incarceration and Health.

The dramatic expansion of the US penal system during the past 4 decades has led to an increase in adverse health conditions that affect an unprecedented number of individuals. This article first provides an overview of the literature on the immediate and lasting associations between incarceration and physical health, highlighting the diverse health conditions linked with incarceration, including health functioning, infectious disease, chronic conditions, and mortality. Next, we discuss potential explanations for the associations between incarceration and these health conditions, focusing on st

Mass Incarceration and Racial Inequality.

Despite two decades of declining crime rates, the United States continues to incarcerate a historically and comparatively large segment of the population. Moreover, incarceration and other forms of criminal justice contact ranging from police stops to community supervision are disproportionately concentrated among African American and Latino men. Mass incarceration, and other ways in which the criminal justice system infiltrates the lives of families, has critical implications for inequality. Differential rates of incarceration damage the social and emotional development of children whose pare

Incarceration of the Gravid Uterus.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to describe the risk factors, clinical and radiographic criteria, and management of this rare complication of pregnancy. METHODS: A PubMed, Web of Science, and CINAHL search was undertaken with no limitations on the number of years searched. RESULTS: There were 60 articles identified, with 53 articles being the basis of this review. Multiple risk factors have been suggested in the literature including retroverted uterus in the first trimester, deep sacral concavity with an overlying sacral promontory, endometriosis, previous abdominal or pelvic surgery,

Sexually transmitted diseases and incarceration.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize recent literature on the prevalence and burden of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) - focusing on syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea - among adult correctional inmates and detained juveniles. The review is largely limited to US settings. RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence is higher and the consequences of STDs are generally more severe for incarcerated women than men. Chlamydia and gonorrhea may be more prevalent among confined juveniles than among incarcerated adults, whereas syphilis is probably more prevalent among adults. The opportunity exists to provide e

Aging With Incarceration Histories: An Intersectional Examination of Incarceration and Health Outcomes Among Older Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Experiences with incarceration are linked to poor mental and physical health across the life course. The purpose of this research is to examine whether incarceration histories are associated with worse physical and mental health among older adults. We apply an intersectionality framework and consider how the intersection of sexism and racism leads to unequal health outcomes following incarceration among women and people of color. METHODS: We employ 2 measures of health (i.e., number of depressive symptoms and physical limitations) to broadly capture mental and physical health. Usi

Universal health coverage and incarceration.

Global progress towards universal coverage of essential health services, a component of UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.8, is measured at the country level using the WHO Service Coverage Index. However, data collection for this crucial metric excludes prisons and youth detention centres, despite the health needs in these settings, chronic underinvestment in custodial health care, and poor health outcomes for people released from custody in most countries. Particularly in countries with high incarceration rates, failure to include custodial settings in calculations of the service covera

Uterine Incarceration: A Case Study.

Uterine incarceration is a rare complication of pregnancy in which a retroverted uterus becomes entrapped in the pelvis. This case report describes the clinical presentation and management of a woman with a suspected uterine incarceration in the late first trimester. This article reviews the diagnosis of uterine incarceration, including differential diagnoses, signs and symptoms, and the role of imaging. Management is based on the gestational age at the time of diagnosis. Management options are described along with a discussion of the available evidence.

Incarceration and Household Asset Ownership.

A considerable literature documents the deleterious economic consequences of incarceration. However, little is known about the consequences of incarceration for household assets-a distinct indicator of economic well-being that may be especially valuable to the survival of low-income families-or about the spillover economic consequences of incarceration for families. In this article, we use longitudinal data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study to examine how incarceration is associated with asset ownership among formerly incarcerated men and their romantic partners. Incarceration of the gravid uterus.

Retroversion of the first trimester uterus occurs in 6 to 19 per cent of all pregnancies and usually does not cause problems. If the uterus remains retroverted as the pregnancy advances, it may become wedged into the pelvic cavity. This complication is referred to as uterine incarceration which can lead to spontaneous abortion, preterm labor, uterine dystocia, and inadvertent incision into the cervix or the bladder during cesarean section in cases of unrecognized incarceration. Seven cases of uterine incarceration are presented with a detailed review including clinical signs and symptoms, phys

The Mass Incarceration Trauma Framework: A Conceptual Model for Understanding Trauma among Individuals Who Experience Incarceration.

The Mass Incarceration Trauma (MIT) framework is a conceptual model for understanding the role of trauma in the lives of individuals who experience incarceration in the United States. This population faces poverty, violence, and discrimination across the life span. The MIT framework is guided by an ecological systems perspective, a foundational theoretical approach in social work that recognizes that effective assessment and intervention require an understanding of the complex contexts in which individuals live. The MIT framework presents the cumulative trauma exposures commonly faced by this

The Effect of Incarceration on Mortality.

This paper analyzes the effect of incarceration on mortality using administrative data from Ohio between 1992 and 2017. We first document that long-run survival is higher among the incarcerated than similar non-incarcerated defendants. Using event study designs centered around the time of release, we show why: mortality risk halves during the period of incarceration, with large reductions in murders, overdoses, and natural causes of death. However, incarceration does not increase post-release mortality, and so the overall effect is increased longevity. These estimates reflect the high-risk env

Parental incarceration and adolescent food insecurity.

BACKGROUND: There is a causal relationship between parental incarceration (PI) and childhood food insecurity (FI). This is a pressing policy issue given that public assistance designed to curb hunger (i.e., Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is often revoked due to incarceration which, on top of the removal of a household income source, can significantly alter children's food access. Yet questions remain regarding the prevalence of FI among youth with incarcerated parents, as well as the interplay of parent-child coresidence, race/ethnicity, and geographic region. METHOD: Data come fr

Safekeeping of Pregnant People Experiencing Incarceration.

Safekeeping involves transferring individuals from jails to prisons without the presence of a conviction. In North Carolina, safekeeping is used for pregnant people with the aim of providing better prenatal care. We interviewed 14 stakeholders in the safekeeping process including sheriffs, clinicians, advocates, and lawyers. Three key themes emerged: jails' inability to provide care for pregnant individuals; safekeeping as an additional punishment to incarceration; and differing attitudes on the necessity of safekeeping. Participants perceived that while there may be some benefits of safekeepi
