Workplace incivility and employee sleep: The role of rumination and recovery experiences.

This study examines the role of negative work rumination and recovery experiences in explaining the association between workplace incivility and employee insomnia symptoms. Drawing on the perseverative cognition model of stress and the effort-recovery model, we hypothesize a moderated mediation model in which workplace incivility is associated with insomnia symptoms via negative work rumination. This indirect effect is proposed to be conditional on employees' reported level of recovery experiences (i.e., psychological detachment from work and relaxation during nonwork time). In examining this

Incivility in the hospital environment: the nurse educator-staff nurse relationship.

Occurrences of incivility in nurse educator-staff nurse relationship studies are limited. A qualitative methodology (n = 6) was used to investigate nurse educators' perceptions of the main stressors for nurses during educational experiences. Identification of uncivil traits as seen by nurse educators and perceived role of nursing leaders in addressing incivility in the workplace were also identified.

Effects of incivility in clinical practice settings on nursing student burnout.

AIMS: To examine the relationship between nursing students' exposure to various forms of incivility in acute care practice settings and their experience of burnout. BACKGROUND: Given that staff nurses and new nurse graduates are experiencing incivility and burnout in the workplace, it is plausible that nursing students share similar experiences in professional practice settings. DESIGN AND SAMPLE: A cross-sectional survey design was used to assess Year 4 nursing students' (n=126) perceptions of their experiences of incivility and burnout in the clinical learning environment. METHODS: Studen

Catastrophizing versus positive reappraisal: The cognitive depletion effects of workplace incivility.

As a low-intensity stressor with ambiguous intent, workplace incivility has sparked debate regarding its real impact. A key unresolved question is how daily incivility elicits specific cognitive processes that lead to sustained exhaustion over time. This study examines cognitive depletion-a critical state linked to impaired job performance-by investigating its relationship with workplace incivility and the mediating roles of catastrophizing and positive reappraisal across different time frames. Using a hybrid methodological approach that combines a five-day daily diary study with a three-wave

Sugammadex reversal of an accidental rocuronium overdose in a dog in the context of incivility in the workplace.

A 7-year-old, 10.6 kg female mixed-breed dog underwent anaesthesia for craniotomy to excise a brain mass. During anaesthetic preparation, repeated time pressure remarks resulted in rushed preparation and workflow disruption. After anaesthetic premedication with methadone, general anaesthesia was induced with lidocaine, midazolam, and propofol, and maintained with propofol and remifentanil intravenous (IV) infusions. Rocuronium was administered as a bolus (0.5 mg kg-1 IV) followed by continuous infusion at an intended rate of 0.2 mg kg-1 hour-1. After 120 minutes of rocuronium constant-rate inf

Incivility and Knowledge Hiding in Academia: Mediating Role of Interpersonal Distrust and Rumination.

Workplace incivility is under investigation for the last three decades, and it holds a central position in organizational behavior literature. However, despite the extensive investigations in the past, there exists a missing link between workplace incivility and knowledge hiding in academia. This study aims to tap this missing link for which data were collected from the universities staff. Data were collected in two waves to reduce the common method biases. In the first wave, questions were asked from the respondents regarding their demographic characteristics and exposure to workplace incivil

Student perspectives on faculty incivility in nursing education: an application of the concept of rankism.

Incivility in nursing education is an emergent problem and one that seriously disrupts the teaching-learning environment and often results in conflicted and stressful student/faculty relationships. Nursing faculty who demonstrate positive, respectful behaviors, encourage similar behaviors from their students. Conversely, faculty who are aloof, disinterested, and demeaning may invoke hostility. The author conducted a phenomenological study to examine nursing students' perceptions of faculty incivility and its impact on the students. Students identified 3 main themes of faculty incivility: (1) f

Workplace Incivility in Nursing: A Literature Review Through the Lens of Ethics and Spirituality.

A literature review was conducted to evaluate existing knowledge of incivility in the nursing workplace through the lens of nursing ethics and spirituality. Study articles presented a consistent theme of improved organizational commitment and job satisfaction when spirituality was injected into the workplace. It seems plausible to suggest a positive correlation between spirituality and more civil environments in nursing workplaces.

Systems approach to address incivility and disruptive behaviors in health-care organizations.

In response to the growing evidence that disruptive behaviors within health-care teams constitute a major threat to the quality of care, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization (JCAHO; Joint Commission Resources, 2008) has a new leadership standard that addresses disruptive and inappropriate behaviors effective January 1, 2009. For professionals who work in human resources and organization development, these standards represent a clarion call to design and implement evidence-based interventions to create health-care communities of respectful engagement that have zero t

Incivility from patients and their families: can organisational justice protect nurses from burnout?

AIM: To determine whether interpersonal and informational justice influence the association between daily experiences of incivility and burnout among nurses. BACKGROUND: Research has suggested that incivility is a concern for managers. Nurses regularly experience incivility, particularly from their patients and patients' families. Incivility, in turn, can increase symptoms of burnout. METHOD: Seventy-five nurses provided data on interpersonal and informational justice within their organisation. During five working days, nurses completed a twice-daily survey assessing incivility and burnout.

How rude! Emotional labor as a mediator between customer incivility and employee outcomes.

Because of the large number of people employed in service occupations, customer incivility has become an increasingly prevalent and important workplace stressor. Unfortunately, relatively little research has examined the effects of customer incivility; of the research that does exist, virtually all of it has focused solely on employee mental health outcomes. The present study was designed to replicate previous research linking customer incivility to the emotional exhaustion dimension of burnout and to expand on previous research by examining the effects of customer incivility on customer servi

Perception and Contributing Factors of Academic Incivility Among Undergraduate Nursing Students in India.

INTRODUCTION: Academic incivility in students has the potential to undermine the learning process because it affects both the perpetrator and the educator. This results from the reduced trust between students and faculty resulting in a reduction in productivity, thereby impeding the learning process. OBJECTIVES: The study was conducted to understand the perception and factors contributing to academic incivility among undergraduate nursing students. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted. A total of 250 undergraduate nursing students studying in three nursing colleges in

Target Meaning-Making of Workplace Incivility Based on Perceived Personality Similarity with Perpetrators.

Target meaning-making of incivility (i.e., the ways targets assess uncivil events) has received attention as an important mediating mechanism in explaining the varied outcomes of incivility. The present study draws on person-environment (PE) fit theory, as well as the similarity-attraction paradigm and repulsion hypothesis, to uncover how perceived personality (dis)similarity affects both cognitive (i.e., attribution, negative appraisal) and emotional reactions (i.e., hostility) to incivility. Specifically, we examine whether incongruence between target personality and perceived perpetrator pe

'It's not just immoral!': The role of moral disengagement and incivility in dehumanising the transgressor of immoral behaviour.

People who engage in immoral behaviour are often dehumanised. However, they also tend to justify their actions to convince themselves or others that their misconduct is morally acceptable. In this paper, we examine whether moral disengagement mechanisms influence the extent to which a transgressor is perceived as fully human. Further, we assess whether this perception varies based on specific characteristics of the immoral behaviour, such as incivility. To answer these research questions, we conducted two studies with online participants from Spain. In Study 1, participants (N = 302) evaluated

Incivility and Patient Safety: A Longitudinal Study of Rudeness, Protocol Compliance, and Adverse Events.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the impact of social interactions on iatrogenesis and lapses in patient safety. METHODS: This field-based experience-sampling study of primarily nurses in a general hospital explored the impact of rudeness on patient safety performance, state depletion (that is, exhaustion of mental energy for reflective behavior), and team processes (for example, information sharing). Objective measures of performance were compliance with hand hygiene and medication preparation protocols, as well as archival reports of adverse events. Data were analyzed by department shift (

What's in an eye roll? It is time we explore the role of workplace incivility in healthcare.

A recent study of patient violence toward hospital physicians and nurses offers a welcome perspective in its classifying of aggressive behaviors as workplace violence. While patients and families are widely recognized as sources of rude behaviors, we need to shed light on passive aggressive and other low-level rude behaviors that take place frequently amongst hospital personnel as well. Studied under the term "workplace incivility," these seemingly insignificant behaviors that show lack of regard for colleagues have far reaching negative consequences. Examples of such consequences include inte

The relationship between leadership style and nurse-to-nurse incivility: turning the lens inward.

AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the impact of leadership styles on the reported rates of lateral hostility in nurses. BACKGROUND: Previous explanations of horizontal incivility point to oppressed group behaviour and socialisation of nurses. Leadership and organisational culture are known to have a profound impact on workplace behaviour, yet few studies have examined the relationship between leadership style and nurse-to-nurse incivility. METHODS: A survey was used to assess the perceived levels of incivility and the leadership styles experienced by 237 participants defined as 'staf

Workplace Incivility, Bullying, and Mental Health-Related Outcomes Among University Faculty: A Narrative Review.

University faculty, particularly in health-related disciplines, perform multiple roles in teaching, research, administration, and student support. Consequently, negative interpersonal behavior may have meaningful implications for well-being and retention. Workplace incivility involves low-intensity disrespect with ambiguous intent; workplace bullying or mobbing involves repeated negative acts over time, often with a power imbalance; and workplace cyberbullying occurs via electronic communication. We conducted a narrative review with a structured search and selection approach to summarize quant
