Implementing a sexual violence prevention program in two Canadian Indigenous communities: Challenges and lessons learned.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of child sexual violence remains overwhelming, particularly among Indigenous populations, despite increased awareness. Therefore, implementing efficient initiatives is crucial in preventing and reducing sexual violence rates among these groups. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the processes involved in the implementation of a sexual violence prevention program in two Indigenous communities in Canada and assess application of culturally safe practices. METHOD: Eight Indigenous and non-Indigenous project managers underwent semi-structured interviews before the

The Enduring Plague: How Tuberculosis in Canadian Indigenous Communities is Emblematic of a Greater Failure in Healthcare Equality.

Despite global strides made in prevention and treatment, tuberculosis (TB) remains an acute problem for Indigenous people in Canada. TB affects Indigenous communities at significantly higher rates than the general Canadian population, for whom it is a disease of the past. This paper suggests how colonialism and its history of violence have shaped the face of TB in Canada, and thus how TB is a telling point of analysis for considering the lack of equity and equality in healthcare delivery in Canada.

Enhancing radiation therapy student's cultural competency and safety of Canadian Indigenous populations using cultural immersion.

INTRODUCTION: Indigenous peoples in Canada have a higher cancer burden and shorter life expectancy compared to the non-Indigenous population. Canada's colonial legacy has resulted in many Indigenous people experiencing high mistrust in healthcare providers which can result in healthcare avoidance, such as delays seeking preventative care as well as lower screening rates. This may be compounded by language barriers as well as a lack of culturally safe care in healthcare settings. Cultural competency and safety education, which can include cultural immersion methods, has been widely prioritized

Grounding Wellness: Coloniality, Placeism, Land, and a Critique of "Social" Determinants of Indigenous Mental Health in the Canadian Context.

Authored by a small team of settler and Indigenous researchers, all of whom are deeply involved in scholarship and activism interrogating ongoing processes of coloniality in lands now known to many as Canada, this paper critically examines "social" and grounded determinants of Indigenous mental health and wellness. After placing ourselves on the grounds from which we write, we begin by providing an overview of the social determinants of health (SDOH), a conceptual framework with deep roots in colonial Canada. Though important in pushing against biomedical framings of Indigenous health and well

Healthcare providers' perspectives on the Canadian Caries Risk Assessment Tool implementation in Indigenous pediatric primary care: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries remains a significant public health concern among Indigenous children in Canada. Integrating caries risk assessment (CRA) into primary care settings could improve early detection and intervention. OBJECTIVES: This qualitative study explored the barriers to implementing and integrating the Canadian CRA tool into the primary care of First Nations and Métis children in Manitoba, based on the perspectives of non-dental primary care providers (NDPCPs). METHODS: Fifty NDPCPs providing care to Indigenous children under six years of age were purposefully selected f

"I felt so alone in the process:" Experiences of Indigenous women with maternal medical travel in the Canadian Arctic and opportunities for improvement.

PROBLEM: Indigenous women face unique challenges during pregnancy/birth-related medical travel due to systemic barriers, cultural differences, and geographic isolation. BACKGROUND: In Canada, Indigenous women frequently travel substantial distances for pregnancy care and birth. Many pregnant women in Northwest Territories (NWT) are mandated to travel to urban centres with secondary/tertiary hospitals between 36-38-weeks gestation. QUESTION/HYPOTHESIS/AIM: What are the experiences of Indigenous women in NWT regarding pregnancy and birth-related medical travel? How do cultural and community-sp

Applying an Indigenous and gender-based lens to the exploration of public health and human rights implications of COVID-19 in Canadian correctional facilities.

Due to overcrowding and subsequent unavoidable close contact, poor ventilation, and decreased hygiene standards and healthcare services as compared with in the community setting, the prison environment is highly conducive to the transmission of infections, including COVID-19. Physical distancing measures may be difficult to implement without introducing interventions that may violate human rights. Given that Indigenous women represent over 41% of federally incarcerated women, this is a cause for concern. Indigenous women are also more likely to have higher rates of numerous chronic conditions,

Trauma and suicide behaviour histories among a Canadian indigenous population: an empirical exploration of the potential role of Canada's residential school system.

It has been theorized that suicide behaviours amongst indigenous peoples may be an outcome of mass trauma experienced as a result of colonization. In Canada, qualitative evidence has suggested that the Indian Residential School System set in motion a cycle of trauma, with some survivors reporting subsequent abuse, suicide, and other related behaviours. It has been further postulated that the effects of trauma can also be passed inter-generationally. Today, there are four generations of Canadian First Nations residential school survivors who may have transmitted the trauma they experienced to t

The Complexities of Intimate Partner Violence: Mental Health, Disabilities, and Child Abuse History for White, Indigenous, and Other Visible Minority Canadian Women.

This research examines how mental health issues associated with intimate partner violence (IPV) relate to women's intersecting identities of race/ethnicity, disability status, and child abuse history. Data (N = 595) from a Canadian triprovincial study included women who were White (n = 263, 44.8%), Indigenous (n = 292, 49.7%), or visible minority (n = 32, 5.5%). Few demographic differences were found. None of the mental health measures (Symptom Checklist-Short Form [SCL-10], Centre for Epidemiological Studies-Depression [CES-D-10], Posttraumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD] Checklist) were in the cl

Barriers, supports, and effective interventions for uptake of human papillomavirus- and other vaccines within global and Canadian Indigenous peoples: a systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Despite the existence of human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccines with demonstrated safety and effectiveness and funded HPV vaccination programs, coverage rates are persistently lower and cervical cancer burden higher among Canadian Indigenous peoples. Barriers and supports to HPV vaccination in Indigenous peoples have not been systematically documented, nor have interventions to increase uptake in this population. This protocol aims to appraise the literature in Canadian and global Indigenous peoples, relating to documented barriers and supports to vaccination and interventions to inc

The Cedar Project: Relationship between child apprehension and attempted suicide among young Indigenous mothers impacted by substance use in two Canadian cities.

Indigenous leaders are gravely concerned over disproportionate representation of Indigenous children in Canada's child welfare systems. Forced separation from children is deeply traumatizing for mothers and detrimental to the wellbeing of Indigenous families, communities and Nations. This study examined relationships between child apprehension and suicide attempt within a cohort of young Indigenous women impacted by substance use. We utilized data collected every 6 months (2008-2016) by the Cedar Project, an Indigenous-governed cohort study involving young Indigenous people who use drugs in Br

The Cedar Project: resilience in the face of HIV vulnerability within a cohort study involving young Indigenous people who use drugs in three Canadian cities.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous scholars have long argued that it is critical for researchers to identify factors related to cultural connectedness that may protect against HIV and hepatitis C infection and buffer the effects of historical and lifetime trauma among young Indigenous peoples. To our knowledge, no previous epidemiological studies have explored the effect of historical and lifetime traumas, cultural connectedness, and risk factors on resilience among young, urban Indigenous people who use drugs. METHODS: This study explored risk and protective factors associated with resilience among part

A Scoping Review of the Current Knowledge of the Social Determinants of Health and Infectious Diseases (Specifically COVID-19, Tuberculosis, and H1N1 Influenza) in Canadian Arctic Indigenous Communities.

Social determinants of health (SDHs) and the impact of colonization can make Canadian Arctic Indigenous communities susceptible to infectious diseases, including the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This scoping review followed the PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews and studied what is known about selected pandemics (COVID-19, tuberculosis, and H1N1 influenza) and SDHs (healthcare accessibility, food insecurity, mental health, cultural continuity, housing, community infrastructure, and socioeconomic status (SES)) for Canadian Arctic Indigenous communities. Original studies published in

A systematic review of BCG vaccination policies among high-risk groups in low TB-burden countries: implications for vaccination strategy in Canadian indigenous communities.

BACKGROUND: Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination against tuberculosis (TB) is widespread in high-TB-burden countries, however, BCG vaccination policies in low-burden countries vary. Considering the uncertainties surrounding BCG efficacy and the lower likelihood of TB exposure in low-incidence countries, most have discontinued mass vaccination, choosing instead a targeted vaccination strategy among high-risk groups. Given the increased risk of TB infection in Canadian Indigenous communities compared to the general Canadian population, these communities are a pertinent example of high-incid

Pathways to healing: balancing the tensions between harm reduction and cultural practices in a managed alcohol program for Indigenous adults in Calgary, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the strengths and challenges of running a managed alcohol program for Indigenous adults in a non-Indigenous organization and posit areas to embed cultural practices as a necessary aspect for healing. METHODS: Grounded in a Two-Eyed Seeing approach that weaved western and Indigenous ways of knowing and a community-based research design, this project included staff group and individual interviews followed by a Knowledge Keeper review. Cultural practices and ceremony guided the project from start to finish. Researchers used reflexive thematic analysis to c

Mood disorders among older Canadians.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of Canadians are living with mental health problems, including mood disorders. However, few studies have examined the prevalence of, and factors associated with, mood disorders among older Canadians (65 years or older). DATA AND METHODS: A pooled sample of 172,524 community-dwelling older Canadians from nine cycles of the annual Canadian Community Health Survey - 2015 to 2023 - was used to examine mood disorders and associated correlates. Multivariable logistic regression, stratified by sex, was implemented to identify factors associated with mood disorders.

Reclaiming Indigenous birth: research framework to assess the economic costs and outcomes of obstetric evacuation and experiences of Indigenous midwifery in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous communities in Canada (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples) have distinct traditional knowledge and practices for pregnancy and birth, and these have sustained healthy and thriving Indigenous communities for millennia. Indigenous midwives historically held a leading role as primary providers of sexual and reproductive healthcare. However, colonial practices severely disrupted the role of Indigenous midwives and the transfer of their knowledge from generation to generation. The obstetric evacuation policy in Canada requires people who live in rural and remote location
