Canadian review of sociology = Revue canadienne de sociologie2026eng
Suicide rates among Indigenous Peoples in Canada remain significantly higher than those in non-Indigenous populations, yet explanations have mostly focused on individual and clinical factors. This study offers a sociological perspective by framing suicidality as an anomic response to structural frustration and strain caused by settler colonialism. In this view, patterns of suicidality, like patterns of drug use, are seen not as symptoms of personal pathology but as effects of structural harm experienced by Indigenous communities. Using data from the 2017 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, the analysis

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review was to synthesize the rapidly accelerating literature on Indigenous peoples and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and to identify barriers to implementation and sustainability. The article also addressed outcomes, perspectives, and suggestions for implementing culturally adapted MOUD programs.
METHOD: We conducted a scoping review of articles indexed in MEDLINE, APA PsycInfo, Scopus, and ERIC (through September 2024). Articles needed to include substantive information on an Indigenous population (in Canada, the United States, New Zealand, or Australia),

Australia's approach to its biosecurity and borders has always been two-pronged - quarantine first, vaccination second. This article asks what this combination looked like in practice by exploring two neglected smallpox vaccination campaigns directed towards Indigenous peoples in the early twentieth century. We argue these were important campaigns because they were the first two pre-emptive, rather than reactionary, vaccination programs directed towards First Nations people. Second, both episodes occurred in Australia's northern coastline, where the porous maritime geography and proximity to S

An assessment of recent data on cancer in Indigenous Australians (Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders) shows that, although they are less likely to have some types of cancer than other Australians, Indigenous people are significantly more likely to have cancers that have a poor prognosis, but are largely preventable, such as lung and liver cancer. Indigenous people with cancer are diagnosed at a later stage, are less likely to receive adequate treatment, and are more likely to die from their cancers than other Australians. Inadequate identification of Indigenous people in cancer registers p

Chilean studies show high levels of sexual victimization among adolescents. Despite this, there is little research exploring differences between adolescents belonging to Indigenous communities and the general population. This is relevant because 12.8% of the Chilean population is from an Indigenous community. In this study, data from 13,385 adolescents all over the country (15.8% indigenous) were analyzed. The prevalence of seven forms of sexual victimization throughout life was examined. Adolescents from Indigenous communities presented a higher prevalence of statutory rape, sexual abuse by a

BACKGROUND: Currently, pregnant Indigenous Peoples living in remote, rural, and northern Indigenous communities in Canada are subjected to evacuation birth policy, whereby they are evacuated out of their community to large, urban hospitals to give birth. Evacuation for birth is assumed to decrease biomedical risk because people are birthing in hospitals. In Canadian health systems, evaluating and mitigating biomedical risk has become a standard in health decision-making but this framework disregards Indigenous ontologies and epistemologies that guide Indigenous people in their evaluation of he

BACKGROUND: Pelvic health conditions significantly impact quality of life and are prevalent in the general population. Urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic pain are examples of pelvic health conditions. A scoping review was conducted to understand what is currently known about pelvic health conditions experienced by Indigenous populations worldwide. To date, no such review has been reported.
METHODS: A scoping review methodology was used. In February 2024, a search was conducted, capturing both primary and grey literature. An iterative process of abstract and full

The overincarceration of Indigenous peoples and its impacts on individual and community health is a growing concern across Canada and the United States. Federally run Healing Lodges in Canada are an example of support services for incarcerated and previously incarcerated Indigenous peoples to reintegrate into community and support their healing journey. However, there is a need to synthesise research which investigates these programmes. We report a protocol for a scoping review that is guided by the following research question: What is known about culturally informed programmes and services av

OBJECTIVE: Fueled by the commercial tobacco industry, commercial tobacco use continues to be the leading preventable cause of premature death in Canada, with opportunities to improve health outcomes. The objective of this research was to work with Indigenous partners to generate Indigenous population prevalence estimates of commercial tobacco use in Toronto, and examine the association between smoking and sociodemographic, cultural, resiliency, and social variables.
METHODS: Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) was used to generate prevalence estimates of commercial tobacco use and potentially as

BACKGROUND: Obesity and related cardiovascular and metabolic conditions are well recognized problems for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. However, there is a dearth of research on relevant eating disorders (EDs) such as binge eating disorder in these groups.
METHODS: Data were obtained from interviews of 3047 (in 2005) and 3034 (in 2008) adults who were participants in a randomly selected South Australian household survey of individuals' age > 15 years. The interviewed comprised a general health survey in which ED questions were embedded. Data were weighted according

This paper describes cultural and ecological characteristics of Northwest African and Middle Eastern food patterns and discusses the forces contributing to rapid dietary change. Focus is given to indigenous/tribal/ethnic/minorities in these areas with contributions to definitions of these groups, the extent of their diversity, and the importance of their traditional knowledge of local food resources. Urbanization, particularly for those facing extreme poverty in the urban environment, is recognized as a significant force to dietary change and consequent poor nutrition, especially for children.

OBJECTIVES: To foster a critical analysis of the racial inequities affecting the oral health (OH) of Indigenous peoples in Brazil, framed by the social determination of the health-disease-care process (SDHP).
METHODS: This critical literature review articulates the themes of colonisation, Indigenous peoples' oral health and racial inequities in health through the lens of SDHP. It explores how racial inequities affecting the oral health of Indigenous peoples in Brazil are socially determined, understanding that their health and illness profiles depend on the socioeconomic and legal contexts in

Forced and coerced sterilization refers to the provision of permanent contraception without true informed consent. In Canada, this topic is particularly relevant to Indigenous Peoples because of this country's history of racialized eugenics programs. In this commentary, we briefly review the history of forced and coerced sterilization in Canada, describe the clinical considerations for health care providers who work with Indigenous patients in this context, and outline calls to action for health care providers and organizations to support the provision of culturally appropriate reproductive he

PURPOSE: In settler-colonial contexts Indigenous peoples experience greater incidence of stroke alongside issues of access and quality of health care and rehabilitation. This scoping review aimed to understand the extent and range of the literature relating to rehabilitation after stroke for Indigenous peoples and to critically explore where values and worldviews of Indigenous peoples are considered.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This scoping review followed the guidance of the Joanna Briggs Institute. An Aboriginal Advisory Group guided data extraction and analysis and principles of Indigenist rese

Indigenous peoples in the United States have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 global pandemic. Using the framework for historical oppression, resilience, and transcendence (FHORT), the present research study recounted the lived experiences of a group of 31 Indigenous women from a tribe located in the southeastern region of the United States regarding alcohol and other drug (AOD) use during the COVID-19 pandemic. Three major themes emerged from interviews: (a) no change or decreased AOD use, (b) increased AOD use, and (c) reasons for AOD use. Participant accounts of AOD use duri

This review investigates ancient infectious diseases in the Americas dated to the pre-colonial period and considers what these findings can tell us about the history of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. It gives an overview, but focuses on four microbial pathogens from this period: Helicobacter pylori, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Trypanosoma cruzi and Coccidioides immitis, which cause stomach ulceration and gastric cancer, tuberculosis, Chagas disease and valley fever, respectively. These pathogens were selected as H. pylori can give insight into ancient human migrations into the America

Whether there are common features inherent to the psychology of Indigenous peoples around the globe has been the subject of much debate. We argue that Indigenous peoples share the experience of colonization and its social and psychological consequences. We develop this argument across four sections: (a) the global history of colonization and social inequalities; (b) aspects concerning identity and group processes, including the intergenerational transmission of shared values, the connection with nature, and the promotion of social change; (c) prejudice and discrimination toward Indigenous peop

INTRODUCTION: The tobacco and nicotine industry fuels tobacco-related addiction, disease and death. Indigenous peoples experience a disproportionate burden of commercial tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. Over the past two decades, significant progress has been made in reducing smoking prevalence among Indigenous peoples; however, smoking remains a leading contributor to the burden of death and disease. This review will summarise evidence on commercial tobacco resistance and/or eradication strategies, including policy reforms, in relation to Indigenous peoples across Oceania, the Pacific
