Superior neural individuation of mother's than stranger's faces by five months of age.

Human adults are better at recognizing different views of a given face as belonging to the same person when that person is familiar rather than unfamiliar. To clarify the developmental origin of this well-established phenomenon, one group of five-month-olds (N = 22) was presented with pictures of four different unfamiliar female faces at a fixed rate (6 Hz, 166 msec stimulus onset asynchrony), interrupted every 5th stimulus (1.2 Hz) by either their mother's face (mother oddball condition) or, in different stimulation sequences, a stranger's face (stranger oddball condition). In another group o

A Platform for Rehabilitation of Finger Individuation in Children with Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy.

The brain injury that results in cerebral palsy CP may adversely affect fine motor control of the hand. The degradation of manual dexterity in the fingers profoundly impacts overall functionality of the upper limb, yet research efforts to facilitate rehabilitation of finger individuation in children with CP have been limited. This study describes the development of an integrated hardware and software platform for training and evaluating finger individuation. A pneumatically actuated glove provides extension assistance or flexion resistance independently to each digit in concert with playing a

Decoding early and late cortical contributions to individuation of attended and unattended objects.

To isolate a visual stimulus as a unique object with a specific spatial location and time of occurrence, it is necessary to first register (individuate) the stimulus as a distinct perceptual entity. Recent investigations into the neural substrates of object individuation have suggested it is subserved by a distributed neural network, but previous manipulations of individuation load have introduced extraneous visual confounds, which might have yielded ambiguous findings, particularly in early cortical areas. Furthermore, while it has been assumed that selective attention is required for object

Adolescent aggression and differentiation of self: guided mindfulness meditation in the service of individuation.

This paper presents adolescent aggression as mediated by the level of differentiation of self. No research has directly addressed Bowen's notion that level of differentiation impacts child functioning including aggression. Level of differentiation is discussed in conjunction with social, gender and cultural norms as manifested in aggressive behavior. Female adolescent aggression is described as mainly relationship focused and expressed via verbal threats, intimidation and manipulation, while male aggression is described mainly as overt physical violence involving dominance and competitiveness.

TMS over right OFA affects individuation of faces but not of exemplars of objects.

In addition to its well-documented role in processing of faces, the occipital face area in the right hemisphere (rOFA) may also play a role in identifying specific individuals within a class of objects. Here we explored this issue by using fMRI-guided TMS. In a first experiment, participants had to judge whether two sequentially presented images of faces or objects represented exactly the same exemplar or two different exemplars of the same class, while receiving online TMS over either the rOFA, the right lateral occipital cortex (rLO) or the Vertex (control). We found that, relative to Vertex

Observed connection and individuation: relation to symptoms in families of adolescents with bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation between observed familial connection and individuation and adolescent bulimia nervosa (BN) symptoms. METHOD: As part of a treatment study for adolescent BN, adolescents (n = 54) and their parents participated in a videotaped semi-structured interview. Participants were rated on observed connection and individuation from these interviews using the Scale of Intergenerational Relationship Quality and two measures of connection. RESULTS: There was a significant negative relation between individuation from parents and adolescent BN symptoms. Connection both to a

Separation-individuation difficulties and the distinction between bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa in college women.

This study investigated whether patterns of late adolescent separation-individuation from parents, as measured by the Psychological Separation Inventory (PSI), are different for anorexic-like and bulimic-like young women in college. It was hypothesized that anorexic-like women would display a pattern of underseparation from both mother and father. Bulimic-like women were expected to show a pattern of underseparation on the conflictual dimension of the PSI but overseparation on the other dimensions. A total of 198 college women completed the PSI, the Eating Disorder Inventory, and a DSM-III-R s

[Coping with individuation problems of epileptic adolescents and young adults using a multidisciplinary counseling team].

Adolescence is a phase of development in which independence and a self-controlled life are being struggled for. Both the adolescents and their parents have the chance to reduce dependencies and become more and more autonomous. Epilepsy and its concomitants prevent patients from having the same lifestyle as healthy adolescents without such restrictions. Every seizure means a loss of control and is an impediment in the development towards autonomy and independence. Strategies for coping with these difficulties are dependent upon several factors: the time when the first seizures began, frequency

TMS-Based Neurofeedback Training of Mental Finger Individuation Induces Neuroplastic Changes in the Sensorimotor System.

Neurofeedback (NF) training based on motor imagery is increasingly used in neurorehabilitation with the aim to improve motor functions. However, the neuroplastic changes underpinning these improvements are poorly understood. Here, we used mental "finger individuation," i.e., the selective facilitation of single finger representations without producing overt movements, as a model to study neuroplasticity induced by NF. To enhance mental finger individuation, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-based NF training. During motor imagery of individual finger movements, healthy female and

Self, other and individuation: resolving narcissism through the lunar and solar paths of the Rosarium.

This paper describes narcissism as our natural, infant-like behaviour, and specifies three characteristics relating to the evacuation and avoidance of distress, to control, and to distancing from relationship. It suggests that the processes of incarnation and individuation represent the development of the early ego and the 'resolution' of these narcissistic ways of being, including escape from the 'mirror trap'. The development of the early, controlling 'homunculus-ego' entails the loosening and broadening of ego-identifications and the ego becoming subject to the Self. This is an embodied-rel

Tactile object individuation on a fingertip is associated with neural representations in the bilateral inferior parietal lobule.

Object individuation (OI) is the spatial segregation of target stimuli from their background, a process essential for environmental interaction. Leveraging location cues, the perceptual system can individuate approximately four objects (the 'OI range'); this capacity limit serves as a primary bottleneck for related cognitive tasks, including visual working memory and subitizing (the rapid enumeration of small sets). While visual OI is extensively characterized, its counterpart in the tactile modality remains under-investigated. Using fMRI, we localized the task-independent tactile OI substrate

Childhood adversity and depressive symptoms among young adults: Examining the roles of individuation difficulties and perceived social support.

AIM: While childhood adversity is a known risk for depressive symptoms, little is known about the contributing role of individuation difficulties among young adults. The present study examined individuation difficulties and perceived social support-and their interaction-as moderators of the relationship between childhood adversity exposure and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Young adults (N = 119; M = 20.8 years) completed self-report assessments of childhood adversity, depressive symptoms, individuation difficulties, and perceived social support. Regression analyses were used to examine intera

The role of transverse occipital sulcus in scene perception and its relationship to object individuation in inferior intraparietal sulcus.

The parietal cortex has been functionally divided into various subregions; however, very little is known about how these areas relate to each other. Two such regions are the transverse occipital sulcus (TOS) scene area and inferior intraparietal sulcus (IPS). TOS exhibits similar activation patterns to the scene selective parahippocampal place area, suggesting its role in scene perception. Inferior IPS, in contrast, has been shown to participate in object individuation and selection via location. Interestingly, both regions have been localized to the same general area of the brain. If these tw

Individuation of predictive parameters of posterior cranial fossa decompression in pediatric patients with Chiari I malformation and autism spectrum disorder.

PURPOSE: There are no specific guidelines for posterior cranial fossa decompression (PCFD) in asymptomatic Chiari Malformation Type I (CM-I) patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, some studies suggest that surgery for symptomatic CM-I may improve ASD symptoms. This study aims to identify skull and brain morphometric parameters that could predict surgical outcomes in symptomatic CM-I with ASD, using artificial intelligence (AI). METHODS: This study included pediatric patients diagnosed with both symptomatic CM-I and ASD who underwent posterior cranial fossa (PCF) surgery. Eleve

Three-dimensional assessment of finger individuation reveals finger- and joint-specific selective motor control deficits in pediatric cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Children with cerebral palsy (CP) exhibit impaired selective motor control (SMC) that contributes to poor hand function, but current clinical assessments lack the sensitivity to detect finger- and joint-specific deficits to guide rehabilitation strategies. This study aimed to determine the internal consistency and validity of an objective, instrumented assessment of selective finger control (individuation) in children with CP, and to examine its relationship to clinical measures of upper limb function. Individuation of a cut-off value of triglyceride-glucose index for incident diabetes mellitus in patients with essential hypertension.

The prevalence of obesity and diabetes, risk factors for atherosclerotic vascular diseases, is increasing worldwide; therefore, it is desirable to early identify them to reduce cardiovascular events. Thus, we investigated whether the triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index), a new marker of insulin resistance, is associated with incident diabetes in patients with newly diagnosed arterial hypertension. We selected 585 patients with newly diagnosed arterial hypertension referred to our tertiary Clinic of Catanzaro University Hospital for the evaluation of their cardiometabolic risk profile. None o

Individuation of parts of a single object and multiple distinct objects relies on a common neural mechanism in inferior intraparietal sulcus.

Object identification and enumeration rely on the ability to distinguish, or individuate, objects from the background. Does multiple object individuation operate only over bounded, separable objects or does it operate equally over connected features within a single object? While previous fMRI experiments suggest that connectedness affects the processing and enumeration of objects, recent behavioral and EEG studies demonstrated that parallel individuation occurs over both object parts and distinct objects. However, it is unclear whether individuation of object parts and distinct objects relies

Hidden spondylolisthesis: unrecognized cause of low back pain? Prospective study about the use of dynamic projections in standing and recumbent position for the individuation of lumbar instability.

INTRODUCTION: Dynamic X-rays (DXR) are widely recognized as an effective method to detect lumbar instability (LI). They are usually performed with the patient in standing position (SDXR). In our opinion, standing position inhibits micromovements of the lumbar segment interested by the listhesis, thanks to paravertebral muscles antalgic contraction and augmented tone. We aim to demonstrate that DXR in recumbent position (RDXR), reducing the action of paravertebral muscles, can discover hypermovements not evidenced in SDXR. METHODS: Between January 2011 and January 2013, we studied 200 consecut
