Oil and Gas Extraction Industry Workers' Compensation Claims and Proposed Safety Interventions.

OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed Ohio workers' compensation data to identify potential prevention strategies for common oil and gas extraction industry claims. METHODS: Claim rates for 2001-2018 were calculated per full-time equivalent employee. Descriptive analyses on free-text descriptions of lost-time (LT) claims (>7 days away from work) identified common characteristics among claims and injured workers. RESULTS: Among 3134 claims, 860 (27%) were LT. The industry group, drilling contractors, experienced the highest LT claims rate, whereas the cost from servicing contractors was the highest.

Management of acute exposure to toxic gases in the oil & gas industry -a practical approach.

The objective of this work is to present the key elements in the design of emergency management and response plans in scenarios where there has been loss of containment of chemical agents of acute effect focused in the protection of not routinely exposed in a determined occupational environment. To this purpose, a validation of the current criteria for the management of accidental releases is carried out, taking into account hypothetical risk scenarios. The essential elements of the emergency management system are stated, from a systemic perspective and the corresponding risk control actions;

Widespread Frequent Methane Emissions From the Oil and Gas Industry in the Permian Basin.

Emissions of methane (CH4) in the Permian basin (USA) have been derived for 2019 and 2020 from satellite observations of the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) using the divergence method, in combination with a data driven method to estimate the background column densities. The resulting CH4 emission data, which have been verified using model data with known emissions, have a spatial resolution of approximately 10 km. The CH4 emissions show moderate spatial correlation with the locations of oil and gas production and drilling activities in the Permian basin, as well as with emissions

Predicting the probability of occupational fall incidents: a Bayesian network model for the oil industry.

Purpose. The probability of being injured or killed from an occupational incident is much higher than a process mishap in the oil and gas industry. The aim of this study was to establish a model for predicting the probability of occupational fall incidents using Bayesian networks. Methods. The study was performed in a selected number of oil refineries. Bayesian network variables (n = 18) were identified using literature as well as expert knowledge. These contributing factors were categorized into four layers (organizational, supervisory, preconditions and unsafe acts) according to the Swiss ch

Palm Oil in Myanmar: A Spatiotemporal Analysis of the Effects of Industrial Farming on Biodiversity Loss.

BACKGROUND: Palm oil consumption is potentially deleterious to human health, and its production has resulted in 11 million hectares of deforestation globally. Importing roughly 394,000 metric tons of palm oil in 2012 alone, the Burmese government has recently pushed for intensive oil palm development to sate domestic demand for consumption and become international market players. Given well-studied linkages between biodiversity loss and ecosystem instability, this study aims to characterize the nature of deforestation for oil palm production in Myanmar, its relationship to increased biodiversi

The impact of oil industry-related social exclusion on community wellbeing and health in African countries.

BACKGROUND: Oil is the mainstay revenue for a number of African countries. However, extraction can result in multiple impacts on the health and wellbeing of communities living in oil-rich areas. This review explored evidence of oil industry-related social exclusion on community health and wellbeing on the African continent. METHODS: We used a systematic approach guided by PRISMA to search six databases for empirical and descriptive sources focused on oil industry impacts, in any African country, between 1960 to 2021. Findings were grouped according to four dimensions of the Social Exclusion K

Oil on the water: Government regulation of a carcinogen in the twentieth-century Lancashire cotton spinning industry.

In the Lancashire cotton textile industry, mule spinners were prone to a chronic and sometimes fatal skin cancer (often affecting the groin). The disease had reached epidemic proportions by the 1920s, which necessitated action by the government, employers, and trade unions. In contrast to previous accounts, this article focuses on the government's reaction to mule spinners' cancer. Using official records in the National Archives, the slow introduction of health and safety measures by the government is explored in detail. Although obstructionism by the employers played a key role, one of the re

[Pyogenic dermatoses in the workers of the Apsheron oil production industry and the days of incapacity because of them].

A total of 2820 oilmen regularly exposed to industrial oil were examined. Folliculites were detected in 151, furuncles in 63, hydradenitis in 58, phlegmons in 35, panaritium in 30 subjects. The number of invalidity days due to pyogenic dermatoses was 2-3 times higher among the workers exposed to deep oils than among those handling surface oils; this difference is explained by chemical composition and physicochemical characteristics of the extracted oil.

Legacy subsea plastics from the oil and gas industry: Environmental risks of decommissioning in situ.

Accumulation of end-of-life plastic is a global environmental problem. Plastics are widely used in oil and gas infrastructure and bring considerable benefits while in service. However, the environmental consequences of end-of-life decommissioning scenarios are largely unknown. Using the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) as a case study we estimate the mass of plastics deployed in subsea pipelines, quantify degradation and estimate the rate of microplastic generation. Recognising that the relatively slow rate of any subsequent mineralisation leads to an accumulation of plastic particles in the marine

The association between exposure to the oil and gas industry and beef calf mortality in Western Canada.

Researchers assessed the association between exposure to emissions from oil and gas field facilities and newborn calf survival and health status by determining the risks of calf mortality and treatment reported for 27,511 beef calves born to cows in 203 herds, which were followed from the beginning of the 2001 breeding season through the 2002 calving season. They prospectively measured exposures to sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by using data from passive air monitors. They also used the density of oil and gas well sites surrounding each pasture as an a

[Hand injuries resulting from high-pressure injection: lesions specific to industrial oil].

Nineteen cases of high pressure injection injuries in the hand were treated between 1973 and 1998. Same surgical treatment plan was followed in all cases: excision of the penetration point, irrigation, debridement and synovectomy if opening of the flexor sheath was noted, and skin closure to allow early mobilisation. All cases concerned men, work injuries, and volar aspect of the hand. The elapsed time between injection and initial surgery ranged from 1 hour to 1 month with a mean of 6.5 days. Eighteen patients out of 19 were reviewed with a mean follow up of 12 years. In 11/19 cases, (58%) oi
