At present, ultrasounds represent the most reliable investigation with images for early C.H.D. diagnosis. This test is innocuous so it can be repeated and furnishes, especially in the first months of life, all those informations the traditional radiology cannot give us. In this work the authors report a clinical and ultrasonographic study of 1116 children (2232 hips); 127 of these were newborns and they have been followed-up from their birth to 7th month of life with ultrasound test at 1.-3.-5.-7. month of life. U.S. investigation has proved itself very sensitive and specific.

Preterm births occurs in 6-12% of all pregnancies, accounts for 75% of neonatal death and causes significant neonatal morbidity. A large number of preterm birth is associated with infection (30%), because of the release of many cytokines. In fact acute chorioamnionitis represents the inflammatory response to extracellular microorganisms that gain access to the gestational sac. Clinical signs of infection compare in the 12% of cases, while the prevalence of positive amniotic fluid cultures is approximately 50% in patients with preterm PROM. Despite the recent studies about the dosage of inflamm

High concentrations of oxygen are administered with increased airway pressure to most preterm neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Among 20% to 30% of survivors a form of chronic lung disease, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), develops. Its pathogenesis may include tissue damage caused by the superoxide anion (O2-) and other free oxygen radicals. Animal experiments and other data suggested a rationale for superoxide dismutase (SOD) administration in an effort to prevent or ameliorate BPD. Our preliminary studies in 19 prematures with RDS demonstrated its safety in human newborns

Six full-term severely asphyxiated newborn infants underwent evaluation with digital intravenous angiography. All infants were comatose and flaccid and had seizures, depressed brainstem function, and signs of intracranial hypertension. An initial brain CT scan revealed diffuse hypodensities and compressed ventricles. Follow-up noncontrast CT scans showed areas of increased attenuation. Digital intravenous angiography demonstrated venous sinus thrombosis in five infants, two of whom also had arterial thrombosis, and hypervascularity in the sixth infant. Our data document that occlusive vascular
