The development of preterm infants' breastfeeding behavior.

Extensive scientific data are available on the development of sucking in term infants, but corresponding knowledge about preterm infants has been lacking. The aim was to describe the development of preterm infants' behavior at the breast, according to postmenstrual and postnatal age. Mothers co-operated as data collectors using the Preterm Infant Breastfeeding Behavior Scale for observations. Seventy-one singletons (born after 26.7-35.9 gestational weeks) were studied prospectively. Mothers received regular advice about breastfeeding and guidance about interaction and appropriate stimulation.

The behavior of jaundiced infants treated with phototherapy.

This study was performed in order to evaluate possible changes in behavior in jaundiced infants without perinatal complications other than hyperbilirubinemia treated with phototherapy. Thirty jaundiced infants (mean bilirubinemia 13.3 mg/100 ml, range 8.4-17.5) born spontaneously at term and undergoing phototherapy for 6 h or more, and 30 comparison subjects similar for sex, birthweight, gestational age, Apgar score, obstetrical history and father's profession were examined during the 3rd day of life according to Brazelton Neonatal Behavior Assessment Scale (BNBAS). For 6 of 26 items we found

Infant vision testing by a behavioral method.

A behavioral method of screening binocular infant vision called forced choice preferential looking (FPL) has been developed. Clinical trials of the FPL test for young infants are reported here. The test aids nonspecialized personnel in early identification of bilateral ocular abnormalities and anomalies of binocular cooperation (strabismus). It is not possible to screen for monocular eye disease or amblyopia with this test. Modifications of the FPL test may offer new ways of assessing other aspects of visual function early in life.

Behavioral and neurological characteristics of a hydranencephalic infant.

A modified Prechtl neurological examination and the Brazelton Neonatal Assessment Scale were serially administered to a hydranencephalic infant over the first eight weeks of life. Clinical, roentgenographic, neurological and behavioral findings are reported. In contrast to earlier reports, visual tracking of a moving field and auditory and visual habituation were observed. Further, in addition to previously reported reflex automatisms, the infant also possessed what are termed "socially relevant behavioral automatisms". The implications of these findings are discussed.

Mother-infant stress contagion? Effects of an acute maternal stressor on maternal caregiving behavior and infant cortisol and crying.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum maternal distress has been associated with adverse infant outcomes. A potential pathway of how maternal distress affects infant outcomes could be alterations in maternal caregiving behavior. However, the associations between maternal distress, caregiving behavior, and infant outcomes have never been tested in a controlled experiment. This preregistered study utilized an experimental design to investigate the effects of an acute maternal stressor on infant cortisol and crying and the possible mediating role of maternal caregiving behavior. METHODS: Mother-infant dyads (N

Adversity severity shapes caregiving predictors and neural correlates of infant social behavior.

UNLABELLED: Early-life adversity is associated with highly variable developmental outcomes, but identifying sources of this heterogeneity is difficult because variation in outcome is typically accompanied by variation in exposure. Animal models provide experimental leverage by standardizing features of the early environment while allowing variation in developmental experience and outcome to remain observable. Using a graded limited bedding and nesting model spanning normative rearing, moderate restriction, and severe scarcity, we asked what distinguishes social outcomes among animals exposed t

Social Perception in the Infant Brain and Its Link to Social Behavior.

The current longitudinal study (n = 98) utilized a developmental cognitive neuroscience approach to examine whether and how variability in social perception is linked to social behavior in early human development. Cortical responses to processing dynamic faces were investigated using functional near-infrared spectroscopy at 7 months. Individual differences in sociability were measured using the Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire at 18 months. Confirming previous work with infants and adults, functional near-infrared spectroscopy results show that viewing changing faces recruited superior t

Mothers with borderline personality disorders' experiences of mother-infant dialectical behavior therapy.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is increasingly diagnosed in perinatal and infant settings, and research suggests that as well as an escalation of BPD symptoms in this period, these symptoms may also be detrimental to infant development. Providing tailored treatments during the postnatal period may help women and prevent an intergenerational cycle of emotional and interpersonal symptoms in infants. Mother-infant dialectical behavior therapy (MI-DBT) has produced promising, yet inconsistent, improvements on quantitative scales of maternal mental health and the mother-infant re

Safe Infant Sleep Interventions: What is the Evidence for Successful Behavior Change?

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related infant deaths, such as accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed and ill-defined deaths, account for >4000 deaths annually in the USA. Evidence-based recommendations for reducing the risk of sleep-related deaths have been published, but some caregivers resist adoption of these recommendations. Multiple interventions to change infant sleep-related practices of parents and professionals have been implemented. In this review, we will discuss illustrative examples of safe infant sleep interventions and evidence of their effectivenes

Perinatal antibiotic exposure and infant sleep behavior: findings from the ABERRANT study.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotics administered during pregnancy and delivery can disrupt the developing infant intestinal microbiome, but their effects on infant sleep remain poorly understood. Given the critical role of sleep in early neurodevelopment, alterations in sleep during this sensitive developmental period may have lasting consequences for later cognitive and behavioral outcomes. METHODS: In a prospective birth cohort study, associations between indirect antibiotic exposure (maternal antibiotic use during the third trimester of pregnancy or during delivery) and parent-reported sleep at 2 and/

Tick-borne encephalitis affects sleep-wake behavior and locomotion in infant rats.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a disease affecting the central nervous system. Over the last decade, the incidence of TBE has steadily increased in Europe and Asia despite the availably of effective vaccines. Up to 50% of patients after TBE suffer from post-encephalitic syndrome that may develop into long-lasting morbidity. Altered sleep-wake functions have been reported by patients after TBE. The mechanisms causing these disorders in TBE are largely unknown to date. As a first step toward a better understanding of the pathology of TBEV-inducing sleep dysfunctions, we assess

Cross-Sectional Analysis of Infant Diet, Outcomes, Consumer Behavior and Parental Perspectives to Optimize Infant Feeding in Response to the 2022 U.S. Infant Formula Shortage.

UNLABELLED: In May of 2022, millions of U.S. parents encountered uncertainty in safely feeding their infants due to the infant formula shortage. METHODS: An anonymous, electronic, cross-sectional, retrospective survey was used. RESULTS: U.S. parents (n = 178) whose infants were ~10 weeks old during the shortage completed the survey. Of parents, 81% switched formulas during the shortage, 87% switched because they could not find the formula they typically used, 34% switched 3-5 times, 29% of parents visited ≥4 stores/24 h and 26% of parents traveled >20 miles/24 h to purchase formula. Infant frontal EEG asymmetry in relation with postnatal maternal depression and parenting behavior.

Right frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) asymmetry associates with negative affect and depressed mood, which, among children, are predicted by maternal depression and poor parenting. This study examined associations of maternal depression and maternal sensitivity with infant frontal EEG asymmetry based on 111 mother-6-month-infant dyads. There were no significant effects of postnatal maternal depression or maternal sensitivity, or their interaction, on infant EEG frontal asymmetry. However, in a subsample for which the infant spent at least 50% of his/her day time hours with his/her mother, bo

Prenatal alcohol exposure and infant behavior: immediate effects and implications for later development.

Infants exposed to alcohol prenatally, even when they do not suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), may be at high risk for many of the negative outcomes typically found among children of alcoholics including hyperactivity and other behavioral and learning problems. A series of studies are described designed to investigate the incidence and persistence of central nervous system (CNS) related behavioral alterations in three groups of infants born to low SES black women: (1) those who never drank in pregnancy; (2) those who drank at an average of 12 ounces of absolute alcohol (AA) per week th

Aerodigestive and communicative behaviors in anencephalic and hydranencephalic infants.

The aerodigestive and communicative behaviors of anencephalic and hydranencephalic patients are assessed from literature sources and are compared with documented neural structures present in the brainstem, subcortical, and cortical regions of the brain. Much of the data analyzed corroborate previous neurological studies, which focus on central pattern generators and development in model organisms. However, findings suggest that further research is necessary to determine which components of these systems support these behaviors. A low reporting rate of behavior in tandem with pathology is obser

Self-conscious behavior of infants: a videotape study.

The reactions of 4 infants each at ages 10, 15, and 20 months were recorded on videotape as they responded to their own simultaneous video image, their own previously taped video image, the image of a control infant, and that of a female stranger. The subjects' responses were coded by 2 research assistants, ignorant of the original stimuli and the purpose of the study. The following behavioral categories were used: attends, sociable behavior, curiosity, unhappiness-withdrawal, and self-consciousness. The 1st-step discriminant according to a matrix algebra analysis between age groups was self-c

Variations in maternal behavior in rats selected for infant ultrasonic vocalization in isolation.

Individual differences in maternal behavior in rodents are associated with altered physiology and behavior in offspring across their lifespan and across generations. Offspring of rat dams that engage in high frequencies of high-arched-back nursing and pup-licking (High-LG) show attenuated stress responses compared to those engaging in lower frequencies (Low-LG). Selective breeding also produces widespread alterations in physiology and behavior that are stable over generations. To examine processes underlying generational and developmental influences on anxiety in an animal model, we developed

Prenatal cocaine exposures and dose-related cocaine effects on infant tone and behavior.

BACKGROUND: In experimental models, prenatal cocaine exposure has been found to perturb monoaminergic development. In humans, numerous studies have sought clinical correlates, but few have focused on dose-related effects, especially as regards neurologic function beyond the neonatal period. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether prenatal cocaine exposure has adverse effects on infant neurologic, developmental and behavioral outcomes and whether any effects are dose-dependent. DESIGN/METHODS: Infants (398) were enrolled at birth from an urban hospital. Drug exposure was ascertained with biomarkers in h
