INTRODUCTION: Screening for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an important procedure in the prevention of blindness in high-risk preterm infants. In the regionalised healthcare system of Queensland (Australia), outside of the major centres, some preterm infants are cared for in special care nurseries (SCNs). When necessary, infants in these nurseries who are at risk of ROP are transferred to a tertiary hospital for screening by paediatric ophthalmologists. The transport of preterm infants for eye examinations adds risk and incurs significant costs to the health system. Using a cost-minimisat

Try to tailor your advice to the individual family. Keep it simple and practical. Find out who is going, where and whether the family has any particular health needs. Encourage the family to plan ahead, finding out as much as they can about facilities for young children at their destination. Likely discussion points are vaccinations, infant and toddler feeding, managing the journey, avoiding sunburn and diarrhoea, and contraception. Depending on destination it may be advisable for the family to take some items with them from the UK, e.g. infant formula and feeding equipment, contraceptives, su

The care of any critically ill infant requires special technical equipment for monitoring of cardiac and pulmonary functions including mechanical ventilators and blood gas analysers. The present paper describes the treatment of myocardial dysfunction and pulmonary distress, complicated by severe brain oedema in an infant chimpanzee admitted to an intensive care unit in the Department of Neonatology of the Children's Hospital of the University of Leipzig. The condition of the chimpanzee was diagnosed and monitored by standard clinical tooös including radiography, echocardiography, cerebral Dopp

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the effects of infant massage (auditory (mother's voice), tactile/kinesthetic (massage) and visual (eye to eye contact) stimulation) on weight and height of infant and mother-infant interaction with normal infants over a period of 4 weeks.
METHOD: This study was designed as a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The experimental group infants (aged 2-6 months) participated in one of the infant massage programs at the health district center for 4 weeks. The control group (N=26) was paired with the experimental group (N=26) by match

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the mechanism of death during sudden infant death. To study the mechanism, we obtained data on six infants who died while on a memory-equipped cardiorespiratory monitor.
METHODS: Waveforms of respiration and heart rate trend were available for five infants; an alarm log only was available for the sixth. These printouts were reviewed with attention to mechanism and time to death.
RESULTS: All infants were born prematurely; autopsies reported the cause of death as sudden infant death syndrome in three cases and bronchopulmonary dysplasia in the others. Bradycar

INTRODUCTION: Preterm infants are commonly treated by non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which are associated with fewer complications than nasotracheal intubation. In preterm infants with a cleft lip and palate, this method of respiratory management is difficult or impossible to perform because of air leakage through the cleft defect.
CASE: We report a male infant who was born at 29 weeks of gestation with a left complete unilateral cleft lip and palate. Birth weight was 900 grammes. Because of the cleft, we have any problems to ventile this

This paper provides guidelines to determine the differential diagnosis and treatment of sudden deterioration of an endotracheally intubated newborn infant. Since such an event is most often secondary to a mechanical problem, simple adjustment of the ventilator in response to blood gas analysis will only rarely be sufficient to stabilize the infant. The proposed algorithm integrates history, physical examination, investigations, and therapeutic intervention (of which manual ventilation is the keystone). We hope that such an algorithm may help training physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapi

Despite a high burden of respiratory disease among infants globally, limited options exist for lung function testing in this age group. Tidal breathing techniques such as oscillometry allow for understanding the pathophysiology of diseases that originate early in life, thus providing the opportunity to develop timely prevention and treatment strategies. This review summarises the principles of infant oscillometry, the primary oscillometry measures, physiological differences compared to older age groups, commonly used testing platforms, laboratory benchmarking, and future directions for researc

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of intact cord resuscitation (ICR) in very preterm infants using a custom-equipped mobile resuscitation trolley (LifeStart®). We collected maternal and neonatal data of all inborn infants < 32 weeks eligible for ICR per our protocol over 9 months from ICR implementation. We compared rates of ICR between the beginning and the end of the study period. We reviewed maternal and neonatal adverse events related to the procedure and direct outcomes. In order to assess potential quality improvements related to the procedure, we collected the sam

BACKGROUND: Inadequate neonatal facilities in rural areas is one of the challenges affecting the management of preterm infants. In low income countries with limited resources, over 90% of preterm babies die within few days of life.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the challenges encountered by midwives when providing care to preterm infants at resource limited health facilities in Limpopo Province, South Africa.
METHODS: Qualitative research approach, using exploratory and descriptive design was used. Non-probability purposive sampling was used to select twenty three midwiv

For infants with high arched palate, feeding is one of the most immediate challenges faced by parents and caretakers. General suggestions for feeding in infants with cleft palate may be adapted to infants with high arched palate. These include oral feeding facilitation techniques and special feeding tools. Here we present a newborn with a high arched palate and serious feeding problems who was fed easily by a large size and a large hole nipple, ordinarily used for infants older than 6 months, instead of specialized feeding equipment.

A male newborn infant with hypoplastic left heart and transposition of the great arteries died on the second day of life. The haemodynamic consequences of this malformation are considerably different from those of ordinary hypoplastic left heart syndrome because of pulmonary rather than aortic atresia. In the absence of cross sectional echocardiographic equipment, cardiac catheterisation with angiography is necessary to delineate the anatomical picture. These two conditions have not apparently been reported before in association.

BACKGROUND: The orofacial defect of cleft lip/palate (CL/P) involves an altered physiological anatomy that affects the infant's feeding ability. Infants have cleft lip (CL), cleft palate (CP), or both (CL/P). Dysfunction in the seal, as with cleft lip, or in the ability to coordinate muscle movement to generate negative pressure, as with cleft palate, leads to feeding issues that may compromise growth and affect bonding.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to present (1) scientific evidence that supports clinical feeding practices for the infant with CL/P and (2) teaching strategies for s

A new system of surface-induced profound hypothermia for infant cardiac operations has been developed in order to overcome problems inherent in the current techniques using crushed ice, water baths, and similar methods. The hypothermic chamber consists of two parts: a lower part, containing a refrigeration unit and a blower fan capable of lowering the air temperature in the chamber to -6 degrees C, and an upper part made of Plexiglas that has a completely detachable end to allow easy access to cannulas, the anesthesia hose, and the infant. A temperature panel recorder to monitor the infant's e

Technologic improvement in ultrasound equipment, together with new clinical information, has altered the imaging of the abdomen in infants. Improvements in ultrasound equipment have allowed this to become the diagnostic test of choice for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. Barium upper gastrointestinal radiography still remains the diagnostic test of choice for malrotation. New technologies for reduction of intussusception include air reduction and saline enemas with ultrasound monitoring. Controversies surrounding the different technologies and imaging strategies are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in infants aged <6 mo (u6m) is poorly identified and managed in many countries, increasing the risk of poor growth and development. Addressing this gap, 2023 WHO malnutrition guidelines recommend assessment, classification and treatment at primary care level. This study aimed to assess primary healthcare facility readiness for nutritional care in infants u6m.
METHODS: We adapted the Harmonized Health Facility Assessment (HHFA), adding items for Management of small and nutritionally At-risk Infants u6m and their Mothers (MAMI) at five care contact points. Our HHFA-MAMI

Reports of survival of infants with serum sodium levels exceeding 200 mmol/L are extremely rare. We describe a 34-day-old, 3.6-kg male infant who developed extreme hypernatremia (serum sodium >200 mmol/L) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome following accidental salt poisoning. When continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) was not feasible because of the patient's low body weight and lack of appropriately sized equipment, peritoneal dialysis (PD) was initiated as rescue therapy. Within 24 hours, serum sodium decreased to 186.7 mmol/L, with parallel improvements in metabolic acidosis, coa

Ultrasound examination of the infant brain has been performed in selected medical centers for many years. However, the equipment necessary for obtaining satisfactory visualization of the brain has only recently become commercially available. Currently, ultrasonography is an excellent, noninvasive, inexpensive, rapid, and safe imaging modality for the evaluation of hydrocephalus and other pathologic conditions of the neonatal brain. Ventricular size can often be evaluated in infants up to two or three years of age, but a detailed image of the brain parenchyma becomes more difficult to obtain in
