Arsenic contents in Spanish infant rice, pureed infant foods, and rice.

UNLABELLED: It seems there is a positive correlation between rice content and arsenic level in foods. This is of extraordinary importance for infants below 1 y of age because their diet is very limited and in some cases is highly dependent on rice-based products; this is particularly true for infants with the celiac disease because they have no other option than consume gluten-free products, such as rice or corn. Arsenic contents were significantly higher (P < 0.001) in gluten-free infant rice (0.057 mg kg⁻¹) than in products with gluten, based on a mixture of cereals (0.024 mg kg⁻¹). Besides,

An exploration of factors associated with food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome: Birth, infant feeding and food triggers.

BACKGROUND: Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated food allergic disorder with a well-characterized phenotype, but limited understanding of factors associated with food cross-reactivity, severity and tolerance. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study spanning 20 years on children with acute FPIES from a single paediatric tertiary centre in New South Wales, Australia, focusing on identifying food trigger co-associations and factors associated with reaction severity, multiple trigger FPIES and/or tolerance was performed. RESULTS: A total of 168 individuals with

Milk Product Safety and Household Food Hygiene Influence Bacterial Contamination of Infant Food in Peri-Urban Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Milk is a common infant food in peri-urban Kenya that can transmit diarrhea-causing enteric pathogens. Little is known about how contamination of milk at point of purchase and household handling of milk-based infant foods contribute to infant exposure to enteric pathogens. OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence and concentrations of bacterial indicator organisms and enteric pathogens in unpackaged, fresh pasteurized, and ultra-high temperature (UHT) treated milk at purchase and assess the influence of the type of milk used to prepare infant food on contamination of this food. METHO

The Effect of Breastfeeding on Food Allergies in Newborns and Infants.

Breastfeeding is the preferred method of infant feeding and its establishment is one of the primary goals for the infant. Allergic diseases are common in childhood, with increased morbidity. Food allergies are also associated with a strong negative impact on health-related quality of life and is a major public health problem. In addition, maternal exclusion of common allergens during pregnancy and/or lactation suggests that supplementation with regular cow's milk formula during the first week of life should be avoided. Breast milk contains many active immune factors, such as cytokines, inflamm

Prechewing of food by adults and streptococcal pharyngitis in infants.

Three infants with group A streptococcal pharyngitis were found to have eaten food prechewed by their parents. One parent had a history of recent pharyngitis and another had frequent episodes of tonsillitis. Prechewing of babies' food, which may be more common in the United States than is generally recognized, may be a mode of transmission of group A streptococcal pharyngitis to infants.

Studies of hypersensitivity reactions to foods in infants and children.

In order to extend previous investigations of adverse reactions to foods performed at this institution, 68 children, aged 5 mo to 15 yr, were studied. All subjects reported a history of adverse reaction to ingestion of one or more of the 14 foods under study. Sixteen of 43 subjects, 3 yr of age or older, had 22 adverse reactions during 94 food challenges with one or more of the 14 foods. All reactions confirmed were to peanut or other nuts, milk, egg, and soy. Skin testing with 1:20 weight/volume concentrations of food extracts applied by the puncture technique produced a net wheal reaction 3

From the Field - Supporting Families as They Navigate Infant Food Allergies.

Infant food allergies present significant challenges for breastfeeding families, who often receive conflicting information and inadequate support when implementing elimination diets. This article examines current research on protein transfer in human milk and proposes evidence-based approaches to managing suspected food allergies while preserving breastfeeding. Recent studies demonstrate that food proteins transfer into human milk with consistent timing patterns across multiple allergens, typically peaking within 2 hours of maternal ingestion and clearing within 6 to 8 hours. This understandin

Total mercury in infant food, occurrence and exposure assessment in Portugal.

Commercial infant food labelled as from organic and conventional origin (n = 87) was analysed for total mercury content using a direct mercury analyser (DMA). Median contents of mercury were 0.50, 0.50 and 0.40 μg kg⁻¹ for processed cereal-based food, infant formulae and baby foods, respectively, with a maximum value of 19.56 μg kg⁻¹ in a baby food containing fish. Processed cereal-based food samples showed statistically significant differences for mercury content between organic and conventional analysed products. Consumption of commercial infant food analysed did not pose a risk to infants w

Are infants with food allergy candidates for respiratory allergy?

AIM: Allergic sensitization in infancy generally develops against food allergens. We aimed to investigate the frequency of aero-allergens sensitization at older ages in infants with food allergy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in Dr. Behçet Uz Children's Allergy Clinic. Infants with confirmed IgE-mediated food allergy between January 1st, 2004, and December 31st, 2016, were evaluated for aero-allergen sensitivities through skin prick tests (SPT) after at least two years after diagnosis, and the data were compared with a healthy control group. Acrylamide in commercial foods and intake by infants in Estonia.

Acrylamide is formed when certain foods with low moisture are prepared at above 120 ºC, especially those foods containing asparagine and reducing sugars such as glucose and fructose. Acrylamide is a probable carcinogen, and from animal evidence the margins of exposure indicate a concern for neoplastic effects. On a body weight basis infants´ acrylamide intakes are often higher than those of adults. The aim of the study was to determine acrylamide levels in different commercially-available foods and to assess dietary acrylamide intakes by infants. The acrylamide content in samples ranged widely

[Atopic dermatitis in infants not caused by food allergy].

Food allergy is not the primary cause ofatopic dermatitis. This is illustrated in 3 patients with atopic dermatitis, a girl aged 6 months and 2 boys aged 6 and 7 months, respectively, who were referred to our outpatient clinic for evaluation for possible food allergies. All 3 patients were receiving hypoallergenic formula because their parents or health care providers suspected that the atopic dermatitis was caused by a cows' milk allergy. After sufficient explanation of the causes of atopic dermatitis and thorough clarification and use of topical therapy, a remarkable improvement in the sever

The role of enriched foods in infant and child nutrition.

Since the last century, fortified and enriched foods are products whose original composition has been modified-through addition of essential nutrients-to satisfy specific population needs. For the fortification of foods to have a positive impact on nutritional status, the micronutrients added must be well absorbed and utilized by the organism (bioavailability). Diverse factors affect bioavailability, such as the nutritional status of individuals, the presence in the diet of substances which facilitate or inhibit its absorption, interactions among micronutrients, illnesses, and chemical charact

Severe methemoglobinemia due to food intoxication in infants.

The purpose of this case report is to illustrate food intoxication in infants as a consequence of fennel ingestion. Four cases of methemoglobinemia (MetHb) are presented here. Each patient ate homemade fennel purée a few hours prior to arriving to the emergency department with cyanosis unresponsive to oxygen, in the absence of suspected cyanotic heart disease. All 4 patients received treatment with methylene blue and fully recovered. Our cases emphasize that improper handling and storing of vegetables can lead to life-threatening MetHb.

Survey of infant foods for Clostridium botulinum spores.

A total of 236 samples of infant foods, including honey, dry cereal, nonfat dry milk, evaporated milk, canned formula, and canned baby food, were collected in the New York City area and tested for the presence of Clostridium botulinum spores. Methods for recovery of spores were validated using foods spiked with 4 spores/mL or g. None of the products contained C. botulinum spores, indicating that their incidence in these commercial foods is not widespread. This limited study did not identify any food types that could be suspected of being involved in the transmission of infant botulism.

[Skin changes in alimentary zinc deficiency caused by artificial infant food].

We report on 2 non-related newborn children who developed erythematosquamous skin eruptions on both their faces and the extensor sides of their fingers at the 4th and 10th week after birth, resp. Both children had been fed upon hypoallergenic formulas since birth. Serum investigations revealed decreased zinc levels: 0.4 and 0.17 mg/l, resp. (normal values: 0.59-0.96 mg/l). Following zinc substitution with zinc sulphate 10 mg daily for 3 days, the serum zinc levels of both children had increased to normal values and remained stationary during continued treatment with 3 mg zinc daily. Are maternal eating demonstrations associated with infant food acceptance? An observational study of solid food introduction in infancy.

Research with infants highlights an early capacity to learn from social partners, particularly about concepts that would be difficult to learn independently. However, scant literature examines social learning (such as the impact of demonstrations) on infants' acceptance of foods, even though the timeline of solid food introduction (recommended to start at age 6 months) aligns with emerging capacities for infant social learning, making solid foods an ecologically valid category of unfamiliar stimuli. The present research examines whether infants eat more food at 6 (n = 103), 9 (n = 104), and 12

Formula and breast feeding in infant food allergy: A population-based study.

AIM: To determine whether infant-feeding practices, including duration of exclusive breastfeeding and use of partially hydrolysed formula, modify the risk of developing infant food allergy. METHODS: In an observational population-based study, 1 year olds were recruited from community immunisation clinics in Melbourne, Australia. Parent-reported data on infant-feeding practices and potential confounders were collected prior to infant skin prick testing for four food allergens. Sensitised infants attended hospital-based oral food challenges to establish food allergy status. Multiple logistic re

Energy, Sugars, Iron, and Vitamin B12 Content of Commercial Infant Food Pouches and Other Commercial Infant Foods on the New Zealand Market.

There has been an important shift in the New Zealand infant food market over the past decade, with the majority of complementary foods now sold in "pouches". Along with the increasing market share of commercial infant food pouches internationally, there have been growing concerns about their nutritional quality. However, research examining the nutritional quality of these pouches compared to other forms of commercial infant foods in New Zealand has not been undertaken. Nor have any studies reported the free sugars or added sugars content of these foods. To address this knowledge gap, a cross-s

Elimination Diets in Lactating Mothers of Infants with Food Allergy.

Breastfeeding is the most important nutrition source for infants. However, managing breastfed infants with signs and symptoms related to food allergy can be difficult. Many studies have shown the presence of different food allergens in breast milk, but the clinical role of these antigens in human milk is still much debated. Milk is the main suspect in exclusively breastfed infants with signs and symptoms attributable to food allergy, even if other foods may be responsible. This narrative review analyzes the recommendations provided by international guidelines to determine the diagnosis and man

Complementary food introduction practices in infants with intestinal failure.

BACKGROUND: Oral intake in infants with intestinal failure (IF) may be limited due to intolerance or feeding difficulties. Guidelines for the introduction of semisolid or solid complementary foods (CFs) to infants with IF do not exist. CF intake and caloric contribution from CF is difficult to assess due to malabsorption and incomplete recording. The aim of this study was to identify institutional approaches to introducing CF to infants with IF. METHODS: The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutriton (ASPEN) Pediatric Intestinal Failure Section Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN
