Nutritional balance studies: evaluation of a premature infant formula.

A 24 kcal/oz (81 kcal/100 ml) premature infant formula (Enfamil Premature Formula) with moderately high mineral content (117 mg Ca/100 ml and 58 mg P/100 ml) and a protein content of 3 g/100 kcal was evaluated in sixteen 3-day balance studies at 10 and 21 days of age in nine premature infants with birth weights from 1,200 to 1,400 g. Growth rates were similar to in utero rates, and the formula was well accepted and tolerated. Calcium retention (62.5%) was similar to in utero accretion, and phosphorus retention was only slightly lower. Nitrogen retention was high without the development of meta

Genotyping and Source Tracking of Cronobacter sakazakii and C. malonaticus Isolates from Powdered Infant Formula and an Infant Formula Production Factory in China.

Cronobacter spp. (formerly defined as Enterobacter sakazakii) are opportunistic bacterial pathogens of both infants and adults. In this study, we analyzed 70 Cronobacter isolates from powdered infant formula (PIF) and an infant formula production facility in China to determine possible contamination routes. The strains were profiled by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), PCR-based O-antigen serotyping, and ompA and rpoB sequence analyses. The isolates were primarily Cronobacter sakazakii (66/70) or Cronobacter malonaticus (4/70). The strains were divided

Extent of thermal processing of infant formula affects copper status in infant rhesus monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Infant rhesus monkeys are excellent models in which to study the effect of infant formulas on trace element absorption and status. Infants fed powdered formula from birth exhibit normal growth and have blood variables similar to those of breast-fed infants. OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to evaluate the effects of feeding ready-to-feed (RTF) formulas exposed to different heat treatments to infant monkeys, and, for one of these formulas, to compare the effect of fortification with 2 iron concentrations. DESIGN: From birth to age 5 mo, infant monkeys (n = 6/group) were fed one of

ARA or no ARA in infant formulae, that is the question.

Recently, the European Commission issued a Delegated Regulation updating the compositional and information requirements for infant and follow-on formulae that are to be applied at the latest in February 2021. This new regulation changes the status of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from an optional ingredient to a mandatory nutrient in these formulae at levels between 20 and 50mg/100kcal (0.5-1% of fatty acids). By contrast, arachidonic acid (ARA) becomes an optional nutrient. Following publication of the new regulation, global scientific experts have expressed concerns regarding the potential heal

Malondialdehyde contents in infant milk formulas.

Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in infant milk formulas have been monitored by using an aqueous acid extraction method combined with the thiobarbituric acid method (TBA-test). Vegetable oils, with a remarkable content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are used to enrich the infant milk formulas. As PUFA are more susceptible to autoxidation, it becomes of great interest to have information about the safety and preservation of these products. We monitored MDA content in twenty of the most popular infant milk formulas and in some commercial cow milk samples and compared the obtained data. Levels

Special formulas in infant nutrition: a review.

Special formulas should only be used by medical prescription and for those lactating infants with diagnosed nutritional problems. Lactose-free formulas or those based on soy are the logical choice when the exclusion of lactose from the diet is considered necessary. At present, there is no concensus on the appropriateness of soy formulas for the treatment and prevention of nutritional allergies and current opinion seems to favour hydrolyzed protein formulas. High-degree protein hydrolysate formulas are used to treat lactating infants with an allergy to cow milk proteins or with serious nutritio

Tolerance of a milk-based formula by infants.

A standard, low-iron, milk-based formula was fed to 781 healthy infants younger than 12 months of age. The infants showed normal increases in weight and length during the study. The formula was well tolerated by most of the infants. The most frequently reported symptoms of intolerance before and during the study were loose stools (in 78%) and spitting up (in 79%). A significant decrease from before to after the study was reported in the symptoms of colic, constipation, diarrhea, loose stools, skin rashes, and spitting up. It is concluded that a standard milk-based formula is well tolerated by

Tolerance of a soy formula by infants and children.

For a minimum of one month (mean, 54 days), 287 infants and children less than 8 years of age were fed an isolated soy-protein formula. Prior to entry into the study, a cow's milk formula was being fed to 71%, a soy formula to 9%, and cow's milk or other formulas to 20%. Intolerance to cow's milk was reported in 35% of the patients, symptoms indicative of cow's milk intolerance in 23%, diarrhea or gastroenteritis in 18%, a family history of allergy in 13%, and insufficient weight gain, intolerance to other formulas, or constipation in 11%. Upper limits of iron in infant formulas.

Iron-fortified infant formula is effective in preventing iron deficiency at levels of iron that are compatible with an upper limit of 3 mg/100 kcal. However, lower levels of fortification may prove to be adequate. There are theoretical concerns about the effects of high levels of dietary iron on the absorption of other trace minerals and on resistance to infection. These considerations make it desirable to determine whether lower levels of iron fortification in infant formula will be equally effective in preventing iron deficiency in infants.

Upper limit of iodine in infant formulas.

Iodine is the rate-limiting substrate for thyroid hormone synthesis by the thyroid gland and must be available in threshold amounts to prevent goiter and hypothyroidism. Because excess iodine can inhibit thyroxine synthesis, an upper limit of iodine in infant formulas of 75 microg/100 kcal was proposed by the Food and Drug Administration in 1985. Review of recent studies of iodine physiology in infants and iodine content of milk suggests that a safe upper limit of iodine intake by normal, term infants should not exceed 100 microg/kg body wt daily. Given this limit and assuming the total intake

History and current status of infant formulas.

Formulas that approximate the composition of human milk are widely used as the sole source of nutrients for infants during the first months of life. Such formulas contain milk, soy, or meal proteins, or protein hydrolysates together with those forms of fat carbohydrate, vitamins, and minerals shown to be bioavailable to the infant. Legislation concerning nutrient composition and quality assurance of products labeled as infant formulas has been enacted by Congress. Governmental and industrial standards also help to assure microbiological safety and stability. Problems of nutrient composition an

Growth faltering in a preterm infant associated with inaccurate formula preparation by an automated formula dispenser.

Inadequate caloric intake is a common cause of faltered growth in infants. When investigating an infant with faltered growth, it is important to ensure recommended feeding volumes. Both overdiluted and underdiluted milk formula are common when mixing milk formula. In recent years, automated formula dispensers have been available to facilitate the preparation of milk formula. Our case illustrates a preterm infant who presented with faltered growth in combination with brief apnoea and hypothermia. After clinical examination, investigation and history taking, it was concluded that the faltered gr

What's in the Bottle? A Review of Infant Formulas.

Infant formulas are designed to be a substitute for breast milk. Since they are sole source of nutrition for growing and developing infants, they are highly regulated by the government. All ingredients in infant formulas must be considered "generally recognized as safe." Manufacturers are continually modifying their products to make them more like breast milk. Functional ingredients added to infant formula include long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, nucleotides, prebiotics, and probiotics. The most common breast milk substitutes are standard cow's milk-based term infant formulas, which inc

Manganese in infant formulas and learning disability.

The concentration of manganese in the hair of normal newborn infants was found to increase significantly from 0.19 micrograms/g at birth to 0.965 micrograms/g at 6 weeks of age and 0.685 micrograms/g at 4 months when they were fed infant formula. There was an insignificant increase to 0.330 micrograms/g at age 4 months in breast-fed infants. After this age there was a slow decline in hair manganese to 0.268 micrograms/g in normal children at age 8 years and 0.434 in learning disabled (hyperactive) children. This is the third study reporting elevated hair manganese in learning disabled children

Hypophosphataemia in infants with CHD treated with amino acid infant formula.

OBJECTIVE: Growth among infants with CHD is poor, and is multifactorial with multiple contributing factors. Unexplained hypophosphataemia has been reported among infants and children with complex medical needs consuming amino acid infant formula as the sole source of nutrition. The aim of this audit was therefore to review the incidence of hypophosphataemia among infants with CHD. METHODS: The use of an electronic patient record search for "amino acid infant formula", "CHD", and "cardiac" yielded 136 infants 1 year of age (n=11) and infants with a structurally normal heart (n=31) were exclude

Nutrient retention in preterm infants fed standard infant formulas.

Our purpose was to compare nitrogen, mineral, and zinc balance in preterm infants fed standard infant formulas, Similac With Iron and Similac With Whey + Iron. Nitrogen and magnesium balances were similar during both feeds, and met estimated fetal requirements. Infants absorbed and retained (milligrams per kilogram per day) more calcium, phosphorus, and zinc when fed Similac With Iron. However, retention of calcium, phosphorus (both formulas), and zinc (Similac With Whey + Iron) was inadequate to meet estimated fetal requirements. These findings are important in the rapidly growing preterm inf

Soy protein infant formulae and follow-on formulae: a commentary by the ESPGHAN Committee on Nutrition.

This comment by the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) Committee on Nutrition summarizes available information on the composition and use of soy protein formulae as substitutes for breastfeeding and cows' milk protein formulae as well as on their suitability and safety for supporting adequate growth and development in infants. Soy is a source of protein that is inferior to cows' milk, with a lower digestibility and bioavailability as well as a lower methionine content. For soy protein infant formulae, only protein isolates can be used, and minim
