The ever-increasing survival of premature and extremely low birth weight infants has posed a great challenge to neonatologists and nutritionists. While nutrient requirements are still being defined, there is a great need to continue to improve our strategies for providing effective nutrition for these infants. Similarly, postdischarge nutritional issues need to be addressed since catch-up growth does not always occur. In addition to fetal origins of adult diseases, especially cardiovascular disorders, diabetes and obesity, new data are emerging that postnatal growth alterations also affect the

The origin of some non communicable disease (NCDs) is in early life. Evidence has shown that early life nutrition is associated with the risk of developing chronic non communicable diseases. Pregnancy and infancy are the most critical stages that influence the risks of NCDs in childhood and adult life. Prenatal maternal undernutrition and low birth weight lead to obesity and increase the risk factors of cardiovascular disease and diabetes later in life. Nutrition is one of the easily modifiable environmental factors that may affect outcome of pregnancy, trajectory of growth, and immune system

INTRODUCTION: Early life is a critical developmental window coinciding with the establishment of a community of neonatal gut microbes which are vitally important for immune development. The composition of this microbial community is affected by multiple factors.
AREAS COVERED: The effect of pre-pregnancy and pregnancy maternal health, maternal nutrition, pregnancy disorders such as gestational diabetes, maternal antibiotic usage, delivery mode, infant feeding, and infant antibiotic usage on gut microbial composition are outlined along with the potential impact of associated microbiota differe

Zinc nutrition is of special practical importance in infants and children. Poor zinc absorption causes zinc deficiency, which leads to a broad range of consequences such as alopecia, diarrhea, skin lesions, taste disorders, loss of appetite, impaired immune function and neuropsychiatric changes and growth retardation, thus potentially threatening life in infants and children. In addition to dietary zinc deficiency, inherited zinc deficiency, which rarely occurs, is found during the infant stage and early childhood. Recent molecular genetic studies have identified responsible genes for two inhe

The evolutionary patterns of human migration and historical pre/post-industrial revolution have changed the face of bone metabolic disease through past centuries. Cultural, religious, and lifestyle practices continue to alter nutritional recommendations for this expanding diagnosis. Likewise, modern advancements in the field of neonatology and, more specifically, aggressive nutritional management of premature infants have shaped the epidemiology of neonatal bone metabolism over the past two decades. Decreased use of long-term parenteral nutrition, early fortification of enteral nutrition, and

OBJECTIVES:: To evaluate the association between self-reported maternal near miss and adverse nutritional status in children under one year of age.
METHODS:: This study is a secondary analysis of a study in which women who took their children under one year of age to the national vaccine campaign were interviewed. The self-reported condition of maternal near miss used the criteria of Intensive Care Unit admission; eclampsia; blood transfusion and hysterectomy; and their potential associations with any type of nutritional disorder in children, including deficits in weight-for-age, deficits in

Infant formulas are designed to be a substitute for breast milk. Since they are sole source of nutrition for growing and developing infants, they are highly regulated by the government. All ingredients in infant formulas must be considered "generally recognized as safe." Manufacturers are continually modifying their products to make them more like breast milk. Functional ingredients added to infant formula include long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, nucleotides, prebiotics, and probiotics. The most common breast milk substitutes are standard cow's milk-based term infant formulas, which inc

OBJECTIVE: To explore the safety and efficacy of intravenous nutrition strategy for preterm infants with birth weight < 1 500 g combined with literatures.
METHODS: The clinical data of 93 preterm infants with very low or extremely low birth weight (< 1 500 g) who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Liaocheng People's Hospital of Shandong Province from October 2012 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. On the basis of active treatment of primary disease and early enteral nutrition, all preterm infants received "all-in-one" intravenous nutrition strategy. The i

Human milk feeding (HMF), through direct breastfeeding (BF) and expressed HM, is the optimal source of infant nutrition, yet practical guidance for inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) remains limited outside phenylketonuria (PKU). This review summarises strategies, challenges, and clinical considerations for implementing HMF across IMDs requiring dietary modification. A comprehensive search identified studies reporting practical aspects of HMF in disorders of amino acid metabolism, organic acidaemias, urea cycle disorders, fatty acid oxidation disorders, and peripheral galactose epimerase def

Growth failure in neonatal intensive care units is a major challenge for pediatricians and neonatologists. The use of early "aggressive" parenteral nutrition (PN), with >2.5 g/(kg ·d) of amino acids and at least 40 kcal/(kg ·d) of energy from the first day of life, has been shown to provide nutritional intakes in the range recommended by international guidelines, reducing nutritional deficit and the incidence of postnatal growth restriction in preterm infants. However, nutritional practices and adherence to recommendations may vary in different hospitals. Two ready-to-use (RTU), premixed paren

Protein, calorie, fluid, fat, and micronutrient requirements of pediatric patients are reviewed, as are methods of nutritional assessment and complications associated with the use of parenteral nutrition in these patients. In general, preterm infants and neonates require greater per-kilogram amounts of protein, calories, fluid, and micronutrients than older children. In addition, preterm infants and neonates have deficiencies in enzymes that metabolize certain amino acids, making otherwise nonessential amino acids essential. These unique protein needs have been addressed in amino acid formulat

Research in parenteral nutrition in infants has proceeded rapidly over the past few years, thanks in large part to the perfection of safe central venous delivery of hypertonic nutritive infusates. At present, there are clear definitions of indications and expectations of results for this method of therapy in two well-defined groups of patients--i.e., selected surgical neonates and infants with chronic intractable diarrhea. In addition, we have suggestive evidence of another potentially valuable application in the nutritional management of very low birthweight infants. However, in this group, a

BACKGROUND: Nutrition-related disorders, including vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and chronic diseases, are serious problems in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Many suggest that these disorders are new problems related to dietary and lifestyle changes. In the past four decades, imported foods, such as white rice, flour, sugar, refined foods and fatty meats, have increasingly replaced local foods in the diet.
AIM: A literature review was conducted to understand underlying issues related to dietary change and obtain insights for nutrition research and interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) represent a major clinical challenge, especially during the neonatal and infant periods. They require tailored and long-term nutritional management to ensure proper growth and development. Protein substitutes are essential in the dietary treatment of IMDs, particularly aminoacidopathies, organic acidemias, and urea cycle disorders. In Italy, a variety of PSs is available for infants with IMDs requiring a controlled protein and/or amino acid intake; however, differences in their nutritional composition may impact clinical outcomes. This study ai

Disorders of nutrition, prevalent in the Adrar (a region of Mauritania), as registered in the activities of care units in Atar and similar structures, involved in nutritional concerns are first, protein caloric malnutrition, with serious consequences in high infant mortality. Equally hazardous, Vitamin A deficiency results in serious ophthalmological complications (blindness). Anemia is a common problem among pregnant women. There is, moreover, obesity of a socio-cultural nature, whose pathological consequences should not be neglected. Target populations are children for malnutrition and vitam

We review evidence suggesting that pre- or postnatal deficits of arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) together with underdeveloped antioxidant protection contribute to neurovisual developmental disorders and other complications of premature birth. These two synergistic deficits occur at a time when 70% of energy is focused on brain development and when the brain and blood vessels are growing at high speed. The types of essential fatty acids fed to preterm babies bear no relation to what the infant would have received had it remained a fetus. This failure to meet essential fatty

Well-child care for newborns and infants (birth to 12 months) allows clinicians to identify any abnormalities in growth and development, administer vaccinations, and provide anticipatory guidance. History should focus on feeding, stooling, and sleeping. Trends in infant growth over time should be observed. Infants require a comprehensive physical examination to assess for normal development. Caregivers should be counseled on vaccination practices and their importance for disease prevention with adherence to standard schedules. Vaccine hesitancy should be addressed. Clinicians should review or

Congenital gastrointestinal disorders and other surgical diagnoses share many common problems: increased nutritional requirements to prevent catabolism, enhance wound healing, and provide optimal growth; impaired motility and altered intestinal flora leading to feeding intolerance requiring long-term parenteral nutrition; gastroesophageal reflux and poor feeding mechanics requiring tube feedings and support; growth failure; poor barrier function and risk of infection; and other long-term sequelae. Consequently, the surgical "at-risk" infant requires specialized nutritional support to meet thei
