Infection Control in the Dental Office.

The goal of an infection control program is to provide a safe working environment for dental health care personnel and their patients. Practitioners can achieve this by adopting measures that reduce health care-associated infections among patients and occupational exposures among dental health care personnel. It is crucial for all dental practitioners to be up to date on current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, equipment, and techniques for proper infection control. Continuous evaluation of infection control practices is important. Patients and dental providers should be

[The role of the "infection control nurse (ICN)" in an outbreak].

The nosocomial infection and its expansion is a big problem for both customers and healthcare organizations. It is one of the most important tasks for the infection control team to prevent spreadng the hospital infection and to minimize its damage for clients and healthcare organizations. Japanese nurse association (JNA) has established the system of the certified nurses who finished authorized certification program in 15 areas including infection control in 1999. They are called "Certified Expert nurse (CEN)" and the number of CEN concerning about infection control (ICN) has reached 146 nurse

Rapid development and use of a nationwide training program for cholera management, Haiti, 2010.

When epidemic cholera appeared in Haiti in October 2010, the medical community there had virtually no experience with the disease and needed rapid training as the epidemic spread throughout the country. We developed a set of training materials specific to Haiti and launched a cascading training effort. Through a training-of-trainers course in November 14-15, 2010, and department-level training conducted in French and Creole over the following 3 weeks, 521 persons were trained and equipped to further train staff at the institutions where they worked. After the training, the hospitalized cholera

Infection control practices in Indian dental clinics: A cross-sectional study.

Inadequate infection control in dental clinics increases occupational and patient risk of blood-borne and aerosol-transmitted infections. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate infection control awareness and practices among 70 private dental clinics in India using a standardized questionnaire based on CDC guidelines. Overall adherence was moderate, with significant gaps in aerosol management, post- exposure protocols, sterilization practices and vaccination awareness. MDS-qualified practitioners demonstrated significantly higher compliance than BDS practitioners across multiple domains (p<0

Tuberculosis control in the New York State Department of Correctional Services: a case management approach.

In the New York State Department of Correctional Services (DOCS), the incidence of tuberculosis (TB) increased from 43 per 100,000 persons in 1985 to 225 per 100,000 in 1991. To combat this increase in cases, the NYSDOCS enhanced its collaborative efforts with the New York State Department of Health and the Division of Parole, developing a comprehensive TB control program. This control program focuses on prevention and containment of disease. Policies and directives were developed on the basis of epidemiologic principles, which include surveillance and detection. To assist the NYSDOCS in the i

Barriers to infection prevention adherence and compliance in haemodialysis units in South Africa: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: The burden of infections in haemodialysis environments remains worldwide. Owing to the multiple activities within haemodialysis environments, patients, staff, and visitors in dialysis facilities are at high risk of acquiring healthcare-associated infections. This qualitative study aimed to understand barriers to infection prevention and control adherence and compliance among haemodialysis practitioners in the haemodialysis units in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. METHODS: A qualitative contextual exploratory-descriptive design was followed. Twenty-four practitioners from ha

Prevention of hospital infection.

The prevention of nosocomial infections is an important aspect of patient care, particularly in high-risk areas such as intensive care units (ICUs). Local hospital leadership needs to develop easily defined infection-control policies that are evidence-based. These infection-control policies also require the presence of a dedicated group of infection-control practitioners to provide education, collect surveillance data, and oversee the implementation of the local infection-control plan.

Management of persistent bacteremia caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: a survey of infectious diseases consultants.

We conducted a survey in 2005 of infectious diseases consultants and asked about persistent bacteremia due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Many consultants perceived an increase in the frequency of illness, and, when presented with vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentrations approaching the limit of the susceptible range, most consultants indicated that they would switch to newer antimicrobial agents for treatment.

Assessing the needs of the infection prevention workforce: Implications for infection prevention and control capacity building in US health care settings.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in infection prevention and control (IPC) practices and workforce support. This study assessed Infection Preventionists' (IPs) training needs, challenges, and resources to inform strategies supporting the IPC workforce through initiatives like CDC Project Firstline. METHODS: An anonymous survey was distributed June-August 2023 through national and state professional networks and public health programs. Participants included 267 IPs across 31 states and all 10 U.S. HHS regions. RESULTS: Respondents were experienced (>10 years: 70%; ≤3 years:

Special problems associated with reprocessing instruments in outpatient care facilities: Physical spaces, education, infection preventionists, industry, reflections.

The infection preventionists' (IPs') presence and intervention in outpatient facilities continues to lag behind the inpatient hospital IPs' presence. Additionally, in an outpatient world that is heavy on instrument reprocessing, IPs must be prepared to assess instrument reprocessing practices, including high-level disinfection and sterilization to keep our patients and staffs safe. This paper presents 3 problems associated with instrument reprocessing practices in health care facilities, with a special emphasis on outpatient facilities: physical space problems, training and education problems,

Impact of infectious exposures and outbreaks on nurse and infection preventionist workload.

BACKGROUND: Staff nurse and infection preventionist (IP) workload increases in response to exposures and outbreaks. Understanding the time burden associated with responding to specific pathogens may improve resource allocation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate workload increases reported by nurses and IPs in response to common exposures and outbreaks. METHODS: Surveys were distributed to nurses in a New York hospital network and to IPs who attended the 2018 Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology annual conference or to IPs who were members of local Associ

Severe neutropenia as an adverse effect of methimazole in the treatment of hyperthyroidism.

Ms. K., a white, 47-year-old female with a history of hyperthyroidism had been treated with methimazole daily for a period of 9 years. She presented with a 2-day history of fever higher than 103 degrees F and cellulitis of the right arm after a scratch injury. White blood cell count (WBC) was noted at 0.4 x 10(3)/microL and neutrophils at 5.6%, indicating agranulocytosis. Methimazole was discontinued by the patient with the onset of symptoms. Appropriate intravenous antibiotic therapy and reverse isolation were provided in the acute-care setting, as well as administration of the granulocyte co

Successful implementation of the CDC recommendations during the care of 2 patients with Candida auris in in-patient rehabilitation and intensive care settings.

Candida auris presents a unique challenge to practitioners and infection control teams worldwide because of its virulence, alarming resistance profile, environmental fitness, and risk of nosocomial transmission. We describe 2 cases of Candida auris infection managed with the CDC recommendations with no evidence of in-hospital transmission.
