Neonatal herpes simplex virus infections are rare, but are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Most newborns acquire herpes simplex virus infection in the peripartum period. For peripartum transmission to occur, women must be shedding the virus in their genital tracts symptomatically or asymptomatically around the time of delivery. There are evidence-based interventions in pregnancy to prevent the transmission to the newborn. Caesarean section should be performed in the presence of herpetic lesions, and antiviral prophylaxis in the last weeks of pregnancy is recommended to sup

The prevalence of chronic hepatitis C infection in the general paediatric population varies between 0.1 and 15% around the world, with the highest numbers noted in endemic areas of Africa. The risk of viral transmission from an infected mother to her child is approximately 5% and there are currently no effective preventative measures to lower it. All children born to infected mothers should be tested for hepatitis C. The progression to liver damage in infected children is slow. However, in the perspective of 15-20 years of infection or in the presence of other risk factors, such as concomitant

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus or human herpesvirus 8, common in sub-Saharan Africa and around the Mediterranean Sea but rare in most other countries, is known to be transmitted in childhood within families in endemic regions, and through sexual contacts among high-risk groups in Western countries. Nevertheless recent developments on other modes of transmission of the virus have been made during the last years and are summarized in this review. Furthermore, recent published disease associations are discussed.
RECENT FINDINGS: The last year has seen research address

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection which is systemic from the outset and has increased in incidence worldwide over the last decade. There has been concern as to whether or not co-infection with HIV can modify the clinical presentation of syphilis and, as a genital ulcer disease, it can facilitate the transmission of HIV infection. Diagnosis is based on the microscopic identification of the causative treponeme and serological testing. Recommendations for the treatment of syphilis have been based on expert opinion, case series, some clinical trials and 50 years of clinical experience.

Understanding the biology of vertical transmission (from parent to progeny) of plant viruses is a big, hairy, audacious goal. Virus-infected seeds can insidiously enter a new territory and remain undetected for months, if not years; a single untraced primary source can then lead to epidemics, resulting in regional devastation and global economic loss. Vertical transmission of plant viruses is very difficult to study as it occurs in hard-to-access parts of the plant, over time, and usually manifests at low rates. Observations are generally destructive, often resulting in some orphaned scientifi

Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis is one of few potentially eradicable infectious diseases and is the target of control programs in several countries. The larval stage of this zoonotic cestode invades the human brain and is responsible for most cases of adult-onset epilepsy in the world. The pig is the natural intermediate host, harboring the larvae or cysticerci. Our current understanding of the life cycle implicates humans as the only definitive host and tapeworm carrier (developing taeniasis) and thus the sole source of infective eggs that are responsible for cysticercosis in both human

Varicella infection usually occurs in childhood and is uncommon in neonates. We reported 26 cases of neonatal varicella seen at the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health, Bangkok, from 1988 to 1995. The sex ratio of male to female was equal. The age of onset was between 6 to 27 days. Twelve cases contracted varicella from mothers who were infected between 6 days before delivery to 2 days after delivery (perinatal varicella) and fourteen cases contracted varicella from mothers or siblings in the postnatal period (postnatal varicella). All babies developed vesicular rash. Intravenous

BACKGROUND: Effective HIV prevention programs rely on accurate estimates of the per-act risk of HIV acquisition from sexual and parenteral exposures. We updated the previous risk estimates of HIV acquisition from parenteral, vertical, and sexual exposures, and assessed the modifying effects of factors including condom use, male circumcision, and antiretroviral therapy.
METHODS: We conducted literature searches to identify new studies reporting data regarding per-act HIV transmission risk and modifying factors. Of the 7339 abstracts potentially related to per-act HIV transmission risk, three m

Impairment of innate immunity in tilapia larvae after vertical and horizontal infection with the newly characterized tilapia larvae encephalitis virus (TLEV) was accessed by evaluation of cell-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in affected fish with the use of horseradish peroxidase-amplified luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay. The priming in-vivo infection with TLEV resulted in downregulation of ROS response in both vertically- and horizontally-infected fish; this suppression was further exacerbated by specific in-vitro booster infection with the same virus. Application

Forty yearling Brucella-free ewes were inoculated with Brucella ovis by the conjunctival route in mid or late first pregnancy. Only a few ewes excreted B ovis during pregnancy and gave birth to stillborn lambs, but most of them excreted the organism at lambing or during lactation. One of the 11 lambs which were born alive but died before they were weaned was found to be infected postmortem. In contrast, none of the 46 surviving lambs which were reared in isolation until adulthood, was found to be infected. At weaning, the 40 ewes were mated again with five Brucella-free rams. Although many of

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting cervids across North America, Northern Europe, and Asia. Disease transmission among cervids has historically been attributed to direct animal-to-animal contact with 'secreta' (saliva, blood, urine, and feces) containing the infectious agent, and indirect contact with the agent shed to the environment in these bodily components. Mounting evidence provides another mechanism of CWD transmission, that from mother-to-offspring, including during pregnancy (vertical transmission). Here we describe the detection of the infect

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Zika virus (ZIKV) swept through the Americas and led to recognition of its neurotropism. Zika circulation elsewhere in the world, nonvector transmission including maternal-fetal/sexual/transfusion routes, and additional reports on congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) have been published.
RECENT FINDINGS: In 2018-2019, ZIKV transmission occurred in Cuba, India, and is suspected to appear sporadically in other countries. Maternal-fetal ZIKV transmission appears to occur in about 26% of ZIKV-infected pregnant women. The US ZIKV Pregnancy and Infant

Although Babesia divergens is the the principal confirmed zoonotic Babesia sp. in Europe, there are gaps in our knowledge of its biology and transmission by the tick Ixodes ricinus. In order to reproduce the part of the parasite cycle that occurs in the vector, an in vitro animal skin feeding technique on blood containing in vitro cultivated B. divergens was developed. Parasite DNA was detected in all samples of salivary glands of nymphs and adults that had fed on parasitized blood as larvae and nymphs, respectively, indicating acquisition as well as a transtadial persistence of B. divergens.

Syphilis is a bacterial infection caused by the species Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum, transmitted both sexually and vertically. The disease progresses in three distinct stages, with a high risk of contagion in the early stages. The infection has seen a resurgence in several countries around the world and is particularly concerning during pregnancy.Indeed, from the 16th week of gestation, the treponema can cross the placenta and infect the fetus and it can cause placental and/or fetal lesions. Maternal-fetal transmission is more common in the early stages of the disease. The consequences

VIRAL HEPATITIS AND PREGNANCY. The event of pregnancy, the risks of obstetrical complications and vertical transmission will vary according to the type of viral hepatitis. Hepatitis A is transmitted via feacal-oral transmisson, is generally mild, but may increase the risk of obstetric complications. Hepatitis B, the most common, can be transmitted from mother to child, particularly during delivery. Its management includes prenatal screening and antiviral treatment to prevent vertical transmission. Hepatitis C is mainly blood-borne. Hepatitis D superinfects those with HBV, with limited treatmen

Tuberculosis (TB) during pregnancy can cause certain deleterious effects to both the mother and the fetus, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. The risk of TB rises significantly during pregnancy due to dampening of the immune response in females and certain factors yet to be studied. Since pregnant females are ruled out of clinical trials due to their pregnancy status, not much clinical data is available on how to combat TB in them or about the clinical safety and efficacy of certain drugs. Hence, not only is it important to make pregnant females vital study participants of clinica
