Risk analysis : an official publication of the Society for Risk Analysis2024eng
The proliferation of inaccurate and misleading information about COVID-19 on social media poses a significant public health concern. This study examines the impact of the infodemic and beneficial information on COVID-19 protective behaviors in an armed-conflict country. Using the protective action decision model (PADM), data were collected from 1439 participants through a questionnaire in Yemen between August 2020 and April 2021. Structural equation modeling tested hypotheses generated by the PADM. The findings indicate that the infodemic reduces the likelihood of individuals adopting protecti

The COVID-19 pandemic intensified concerns about misinformation, sparking interest in the field of infodemiology, which examines the spread and impact of information on public health perceptions. This research examines how geographic location influenced COVID-19 discourse across 10 Italian cities by analyzing geographically tagged Twitter data. Our network analysis of 4792 high-degree nodes identifies key information spreaders and community structures, while spatiotemporal mapping reveals regional variations in information patterns and influential narratives. Results demonstrate significant ge

BACKGROUND: In the fall of 2020, the COVID-19 infodemic began to affect public confidence in and demand for COVID-19 vaccines in the United States. While polls indicated what consumers felt regarding COVID-19 vaccines, they did not provide an understanding of why they felt that way or the social and informational influences that factored into vaccine confidence and uptake. It was essential for us to better understand how information ecosystems were affecting the confidence in and demand for COVID-19 vaccines in the United States.

Amid the flood of fake news on Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), now referred to as COVID-19 infodemic, it is critical to understand the nature and characteristics of COVID-19 infodemic since it not only results in altered individual perception and behavior shift such as irrational preventative actions but also presents imminent threat to the public safety and health. In this study, we build on First Amendment theory, integrate text and network analytics and deploy a three-pronged approach to develop a deeper understanding of COVID-19 infodemic. The first prong uses Latent Direchlet Allo

Recognition of misinformation as a public health threat and interest in infodemics, defined as an inundation of information accompanying an epidemic or acute health event, have increased worldwide. However, scientists have no consensus on how to best define and identify misinformation and other essential characteristics of infodemics. We conducted a narrative review of secondary historical sources to examine previous infodemics in relation to four infectious diseases associated with pandemics (ie, smallpox, cholera, 1918 influenza, and HIV) and challenge the assumption that misinformation is a

BACKGROUND: Digital communication ecosystems have profoundly transformed the circulation of health information. During public health crises, large volumes of information-including misinformation and disinformation-can spread rapidly across online platforms, generating complex information environments commonly described as infodemics. These dynamics can influence public risk perception, undermine trust in health institutions, and affect adherence to preventive measures. At the same time, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies have created new opportunities for monitor

Vaccination remains among the most effective public health interventions, but its impact increasingly depends on public trust and a reliable information environment. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, misinformation became a major obstacle to vaccine uptake and disease control. The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI)-including synthetic text generators, conversational chatbots, deepfake images, synthetic audio, and AI-generated videos-has changed how misinformation can be produced, personalized, and disseminated. This Perspective argues that AI-ge

Travel-associated Legionnaires' disease (TALD) events can generate public concern when environmental surveillance findings are communicated without an adequate explanation of the results. This study examined how surveillance data on Legionella spp. were framed and amplified during a TALD-related investigation in Crete, Greece, from June to July 2025. A mixed infodemiology and environmental surveillance approach was applied, including the analysis of 95 online media items across nine languages, Google Trends search-interest data, and hotel water-system surveillance data from epidemiologically l

The COVID-19 pandemic has been parallelled by an "infodemic" - a surge in both accurate and misleading information circulating online. This study examines whether engagement with digital mis- and disinformation contributes to cross-national variation in population health outcomes. Drawing on data from 31 countries over a three-year period, we integrate indicators of online misinformation exposure and COVID-19 case rates, controlling for vaccination uptake, civil protests against public health measures and policy stringency. Using a mixed-effects regression framework that accounts for smoothed

BACKGROUND: Shortly after Pfizer and Moderna received emergency use authorizations from the Food and Drug Administration, there were increased reports of COVID-19 vaccine-related deaths in the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). In January 2021, Major League Baseball legend and Hall of Famer, Hank Aaron, passed away at the age of 86 years from natural causes, just 2 weeks after he received the COVID-19 vaccine. Antivaccination groups attempted to link his death to the Moderna vaccine, similar to other attempts misrepresenting data from the VAERS to spread COVID-19 misinformation.

An unprecedented infodemic has been witnessed to create massive damage to human society. However, it was not thoroughly investigated. This systematic review aims to (1) synthesize the existing literature on the causes and impacts of COVID-19 infodemic; (2) summarize the proposed strategies to fight with COVID-19 infodemic; and (3) identify the directions for future research. A systematic literature search following the PRISMA guideline covering 12 scholarly databases was conducted to retrieve various types of peer-reviewed articles that reported causes, impacts, or countermeasures of the infod

The COVID-19 outbreak, declared a pandemic in March 2020, lacked specific treatments until vaccine development. Medication misinformation via media caused panic, self-prescription, and drug resistance. False propaganda led to shortages. This study analyzes Google Trends for hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), azithromycin, and BCG vaccine searches across six countries. US, Brazil, and India showed interest in HCQ, while Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea focused on BCG vaccine. This article aims to raise awareness of adverse drug reactions, cautioning against self-prescription, political assumptions, and so

Infodemic is defined as an information epidemic that can lead to engaging in dangerous behavior. Although the most striking manifestations of the latter occurred on social media, some studies show that dismisinformation is significantly influenced by numerous additional factors, both web-based and offline. These include social context, age, education, personal knowledge and beliefs, mood, psychological defense mechanisms, media resonance, and how news and information are presented to the public. Moreover, various incorrect scientific practices related to disclosure, publication, and training c
