Nutritional Vulnerabilities and Dietary Disparities Among Migrant Workers in the Informal Sectors: A Global Scoping Review.

Migrant workers and their families have an increased risk of nutritional vulnerabilities. This scoping review synthesised global evidence on nutritional status, dietary inadequacies, and structural determinants of nutritional vulnerability among migrant workers. We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus for peer-reviewed empirical studies published between January 2001 and June 2025 by following the Arksey and O'Malley framework. 59 studies were included from 1,275 identified records across different sectors. The evidence revealed a significant level of undernutrition, such as wasting, un

Quality of sexually transmitted disease treatments in the formal and informal sectors of Bangui, Central African Republic.

BACKGROUND: Interventions for upgrading sexually transmitted disease (STD) management in sub-Saharan Africa have focused on the public sector, and to a much lower extent on private medical practitioners and pharmacies. However, in most African cities there is a large informal sector that provides care to many patients with STD symptoms. GOAL: To compare the quality of treatments offered to patients with major STD syndromes in the public sector, pharmacies, and the informal sector of the same city. STUDY DESIGN: Healthcare providers in health centers, pharmacies, private laboratories, and mar

What is the Role of Minimum Wages in Addressing Precarious Employment in the Informal and Formal Sectors? Findings from a Systematic Review.

This article presents synthesized evidence from 16 studies examining initiatives with potential to mitigate workers' exposure to precarious employment through the adoption of minimum wage policies. All studies were set in low-income countries and focused on both formal and informal workers. A systematic review of evaluated initiatives addressing precarious employment identified the evidence. We consider minimum wage policies as initiatives that could address precarious employment because of the central role of minimum wages in establishing employment terms for workers in precarious situations.

Do free healthcare policies play a role in expanding national health insurance enrollment among informal sector workers? The case of the Afya Care pilot program in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Several Sub-Saharan African countries have transitioned from fiscally unsustainable free healthcare policies to national health insurance schemes. These national schemes often expect informal sector workers to contribute directly to the scheme. Although enrollment in the national scheme is critical to achieving universal health coverage, informal sector workers’ inclusion remains challenging. In this paper, using the case of the Afya-Care free healthcare policy pilot in Kenya, we examine an issue that has thus far received limited attention in the literature: the extent to which ea

Willingness and perceived ability to pay for Uganda's proposed national health insurance scheme among informal sector workers in Iganga and Mayuge districts, Uganda: A contingent valuation method.

High out-of-pocket expenditures (OOPE) continue to make access to healthcare a challenge among informal sector workers in most low-income countries. In response, Uganda has proposed a national health insurance scheme (NHIS), although the informal sector's willingness and ability to pay for it remains unexplored. This study assessed the willingness and perceived ability to pay for the proposed NHIS, along with their determinants, among informal sector workers in Iganga and Mayuge Districts, Uganda. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Iganga and Mayuge Districts between April and May 2019.

Demand-Resource Profiles and Job Satisfaction in the Healthcare Sector: A Person-Centered Examination Using Bayesian Informative Hypothesis Testing.

Work characteristics may independently and jointly affect well-being, so that whether job demands deplete or energize employees depends on the resources available in the job. However, contradictory results on their joint effects have emerged so far in the literature. We argue that these inconsistencies can be partially explained by two arguments in the contemporary literature in the field. First, most studies in the job design domain are based on classic variable-centered methodologies which, although informative, are not well suited to investigate complex patterns of interactions among multip

The need to update Ethiopia's national health and medicine policies: essential tools for informed decision-making in healthcare and the pharmaceutical sectors.

BACKGROUND: Health policy involves decisions at national, state, and local levels to achieve healthcare goals, with medicine policy being a critical component that requires integration and potential reform. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends periodic monitoring and evaluation of the National Medicine Policy (NMP) under the National Health Policy (NHP), ideally every 2 to 3 years or comprehensively every 4 to 5 years. OBJECTIVES: This perspective aims to urge the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Ethiopia to update its national health and medicine policies to address emerging health issu

Trawler fuel exhaust and respiratory impairments: a cross-sectional pilot study among Indian fishermen working in informal sectors.

BACKGROUND: An estimated half a billion people are engaged in fishing related occupations in India. Exposure to adulterated fuel exhaust is common among deep-sea fishermen, yet little is known about the potential impacts on the exposure to health. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether fuel emission exposure was associated with increased respiratory impairments among fishermen who were occupationally exposed to fuel exhaust compared to fisherman occupationally unexposed to fuel exhaust. METHODS: This cross-sectional study compared the prevalence of respiratory symptoms a

Antimicrobial Resistance Phenotype of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli Isolates Obtained from Meat in the Formal and Informal Sectors in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Foodborne diseases (FBD) caused by resistant pathogens are a global public health problem. One main driver of the increasing FBD incidence is the transfer of pathogenic organisms from animal guts to carcasses during processing and subsequent transfer from meat products to consumers. METHODS: In this study, meat samples from abattoirs in the formal meat sector (FMS) (n = 140) and slaughter points in the informal meat sector (IMS) (n = 104) were collected for microbial detection and phenotypic AMR determination using polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: The antibiogram of Staphyloco

A Rapid Review on Complaint Mechanisms for Interpersonal Violence: Integrating Research-Based Recommendations from Multiple Sectors to Inform Sport Settings.

Past studies have highlighted the lack of independent formal complaint mechanisms as one of the most significant barriers to reporting interpersonal violence (IV) in sport. Some countries have since implemented complaint mechanisms specific to sport settings. Evaluations of similar mechanisms in other sectors could inform the development and implementation of complaint mechanisms for IV in sport. This rapid review included studies inside and outside the sport context to document the characteristics of complaint mechanisms of IV, barriers or limitations related to such mechanisms, and recommend

Female Opioid Court Participants' Narratives of Siloed Medical, Legal, and Social Service Sector Interactions to Inform Future Integrated Interventions.

A gap exists regarding how to design gender-specific interventions for women charged with opioid use disorder (OUD)-related crimes. National recent efforts include opioid courts. Treatment courts present opportunities for earlier intervention for women under judicial supervision. We interviewed 31 female participants in the first known opioid court so they could inform cross-sector integrated approaches to address their needs. Data reveal the complexity of participants' involvement with myriad cross-sector organizations, given the duality of their roles as simultaneous lifetime victims and as

Information exchange or discussion? A qualitative study on cross-sectoral collaboration between social security service and healthcare service for patients with chronic fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Chronic fatigue, with or without an identified underlying cause, can severely restrict social participation, education, employment, and daily activities, often leading to long-term disability. In parallel with the health challenges, many affected individuals also seek support from social security services. While cross-sectoral collaboration between healthcare and social security service in managing chronic conditions is increasingly studied, little is known about such collaboration for patients with chronic fatigue. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the experiences

Improving health equity through theory-informed evaluations: a look at housing first strategies, cross-sectoral health programs, and prostitution policy.

The emergent realist perspective on evaluation is instructive in the quest to use theory-informed evaluations to reduce health inequities. This perspective suggests that in addition to knowing whether a program works, it is imperative to know 'what works for whom in what circumstances and in what respects, and how?' (Pawson & Tilley, 1997). This addresses the important issue of heterogeneity of effect, in other words, that programs have different effects for different people, potentially even exacerbating inequities and worsening the situation of marginalized groups. But in addition, the reali

Case studies of health economic analyses informing pharmaceutical health technology assessments for essential medicine selection and public-sector guidelines in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Constrained resources under universal health coverage (UHC) necessitate a balance between medication costs and essential health system requirements. Policymakers practice priority-setting, as either implicit or explicit rationing, embedded in evidence-informed decision-making processes to guide funding decisions. Health technology assessment (HTA) is a method that may assist explicit evidence-informed priority setting. South Africa developed an official HTA methods guide in 2022, however before this, commissioning and performing economic evaluations was not standardized. METHODS:

Emotional Intelligence and Creative Performance in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Sector: The Mediating Role of Psychological Well-Being and the Moderating Role of Cultural Intelligence.

Emotional intelligence is the capacity to understand, regulate, and manage one's emotions, and it has significant effects on employees' psychological adjustment, interpersonal relationships, and job performance. However, the specific psychological mechanisms by which emotional intelligence influences employees' creative performance, and the conditions under which this relationship is strengthened, remain not fully understood. The aim of this study is to examine the mediating role of psychological well-being and the moderating role of cultural intelligence in the relationship between emotional

Strengthening field-informed for-profit private sector engagement strategy in malaria elimination: insights from a single-group quasi-experimental pilot study in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Despite the dramatic achievements in malaria control, Bangladesh continues to face persistent transmission in high-endemic regions such as Bandarban in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. One important strategy to close surveillance and case management gaps is to involve the for-profit private sector that serves marginalized populations including high-risk occupational groups and communities facing geographical obstacles. The objectives of this study were to determine the practicality and the effects of involving the private healthcare providers in the national malaria surveillance system
