Accessibility of web sites containing colorectal cancer information to adults with limited literacy (United States).

OBJECTIVE: The Internet could be a key channel for disseminating information about colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. Little research, however, has systematically examined factors other than writing style related to the reading difficulty of cancer information on the Internet. In the present study we assessed the reading difficulty of 19 CRC Web sites. METHODS: We assessed pages within selected sites containing information on CRC screening or prevention using the SMOG readability formula and Suitability Assessment of Materials instrument. RESULTS: The average SMOG reading grade level was 12.

Nurses' contribution to organizational health literacy: a conceptual analysis informed by a focused mini-review.

Organizational health literacy (OHL) shifts attention from individuals' health literacy (HL) skills to the ways healthcare organizations make information, services and care pathways accessible, understandable and usable. Nurses are central to health-related communication, education, care coordination and quality improvement, yet their contribution to OHL remains under-documented. This conceptual article develops a nursing-informed perspective on OHL, supported by a focused mini-review of recent studies. The review was used to identify illustrative examples of how OHL has been examined in nursi

The Relation Between eHealth Literacy and Online Health Information-Seeking Behavior: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Online health information-seeking (OHIS) behavior shapes health self-management, and eHealth literacy-the ability to seek, appraise, and apply electronic health information-is regarded as its key driver. Previous reviews aggregated heterogeneous outcomes, focused on measurement properties, or examined single clinical populations, without isolating the eHealth literacy-OHIS link. OBJECTIVE: This study quantified the strength and heterogeneity of the eHealth literacy-OHIS association and identified its boundary conditions across generation, morbidity status, and information source c

Digital divide in information verification among young seniors: An analysis of literacies and sociodemographic factors.

In the post-truth era, characterized by rampant misinformation, seniors are particularly susceptible to its ramifications. This study endeavored to identify how sociodemographic factors and five literacy dimensions were associated with intentional information verification among young seniors and bridge the digital divide in verification. Based on the empirical data collected from 405 young seniors aged 55-74 in Hong Kong, the findings indicated that education was associated with both literacy levels and verification behaviors. Different literacy dimensions showed distinct associations with inf

Information overload, cognitive fusion, and health literacy among individuals with type 2 diabetes: a moderated network analysis.

In the digital age, patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are exposed to extensive health information, leading to information overload (IO). This overload results in decision-making difficulties, increased cognitive burden, and reduced health literacy (HL). This study investigates the complex relationship among IO, cognitive fusion (CF), and HL, emphasizing the moderating role of CF. A cross-sectional survey was conducted involving 233 patients with T2DM. Participants completed a general information questionnaire, the Information Overload Scale (IOS), the Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire

Association of Formal and Informal Advance Care Planning with Multidimensional Health Literacy in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis.

KEY POINTS: Higher critical health literacy was associated with informal advance care planning, while higher total health literacy was associated with both informal and formal advance care planning in patients receiving hemodialysis. Patients unsure about treatment preferences had lower total health literacy, and lack of opportunity was the most common barrier to advance care planning engagement. Enhancing health literacy and providing structured opportunities for advance care planning may support patient-centered decision making in dialysis care. BACKGROUND: Although qualitative studies sugg
