Review of Statistical Learning Methods in Integrated Omics Studies (An Integrated Information Science).

Integrated omics is becoming a new channel for investigating the complex molecular system in modern biological science and sets a foundation for systematic learning for precision medicine. The statistical/machine learning methods that have emerged in the past decade for integrated omics are not only innovative but also multidisciplinary with integrated knowledge in biology, medicine, statistics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Here, we review the nontrivial classes of learning methods from the statistical aspects and streamline these learning methods within the statistical learn

Science-informed Policy Making for Protecting People and the Environment from Radiation.

The process to arrive at the radiation protection practices of today to protect workers, patients, and the public, including sensitive populations, has been a long and deliberative one. This paper presents an overview of the US Environmental Protection Agency's (US EPA) responsibility in protecting human health and the environment from unnecessary exposure to radiation. The origins of this responsibility can be traced back to early efforts, a century ago, to protect workers from x rays and radium. The system of radiation protection we employ today is robust and informed by the latest scientifi

How Should Decision Science Inform Scarce Blood Product Allocation?

Blood products are a scarce resource in our health care system. This article discusses a pediatric case involving large quantities of blood products transfused at the end of life. It argues that decision aids could help clinicians determine when to request ethics consultation or re-evaluation of blood product usage in a specific patient care situation and considers questions about scarce resource allocation, futility, and parental involvement in decision making.

Basic Science and Public Policy: Informed Regulation for Nicotine and Tobacco Products.

INTRODUCTION: Scientific discoveries over the past few decades have provided significant insight into the abuse liability and negative health consequences associated with tobacco and nicotine-containing products. While many of these advances have led to the development of policies and laws that regulate access to and formulations of these products, further research is critical to guide future regulatory efforts, especially as novel nicotine-containing products are introduced and selectively marketed to vulnerable populations. DISCUSSION: In this narrative review, we provide an overview of the

Citizen science informs human-tick exposure in the Northeastern United States.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne disease is the result of spillover of pathogens into the human population. Traditionally, literature has focused on characterization of tick-borne disease pathogens and ticks in their sylvatic cycles. A limited amount of research has focused on human-tick exposure in this system, especially in the Northeastern United States. Human-tick interactions are crucial to consider when assessing the risk of tick-borne disease since a tick bite is required for spillover to occur. METHODS: Citizen scientists collected ticks from the Northeastern US through a free nationwide progra

The bicycle illusion: sidewalk science informs the integration of motion and shape perception.

The authors describe a new visual illusion first discovered in a natural setting. A cyclist riding beside a pair of sagging chains that connect fence posts appears to move up and down with the chains. In this illusion, a static shape (the chains) affects the perception of a moving shape (the bicycle), and this influence involves assimilation (averaging) rather than opposition (differentiation). These features distinguish the illusion from illusions of motion capture and induced motion. The authors take this bicycle illusion into the laboratory and report 4 findings: Naïve viewers experience th

Using Geographic Information Science to Explore Associations between Air Pollution, Environmental Amenities, and Preterm Births.

The study uses geographic information science (GIS) and statistics to find out if there are statistical differences between full term and preterm births to non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic Black, and Hispanic mothers in their exposure to air pollution and access to environmental amenities (green space and vendors of healthy food) in the second largest city in New England, Worcester, Massachusetts. Proximity to a Toxic Release Inventory site has a statistically significant effect on preterm birth regardless of race. The air-pollution hazard score from the Risk Screening Environmental Indicators

Scientific foundation of regulating ionizing radiation: application of metrics for evaluation of regulatory science information.

This paper starts by describing the historical evolution of assessment of biologic effects of ionizing radiation leading to the linear non-threshold (LNT) system currently used to regulate exposure to ionizing radiation. The paper describes briefly the concept of Best Available Science (BAS) and Metrics for Evaluation of Scientific Claims (MESC) derived for BAS. It identifies three phases of regulatory science consisting of the initial phase, when the regulators had to develop regulations without having the needed scientific information; the exploratory phase, when relevant tools were develope

Validation by design: Model-informed validation design (MIVD) as a quantitative design science.

Validation underpins confidence in test methods and integrated testing strategies, yet while the methods under evaluation have been transformed, the design of validation studies remains gov-erned by convention and feasibility rather than prospective optimization. I propose model-informed validation design (MIVD), a quantitative framework that treats a validation study as a decision problem to be designed before resources are committed. This expands on our e-validation concept from 2024. Inspired by model-informed drug development, MIVD represents the pathway from target substance population an

A Theoretically Grounded, Behaviour-Science-Informed Model for Understanding Citizen Biosecurity Reporting.

Citizen reporting of biosecurity threats is an important yet inconsistently practiced element of environmental surveillance. This study examines the behavioural factors shaping reporting in Aotearoa New Zealand by conceptualising reporting as a multi-step process influenced by psychological, social, and structural conditions. Drawing on behavioural science, we apply the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behaviour model alongside audience segmentation to identify barriers and drivers of reporting using a national survey of 957 New Zealand adults. Latent profile analysis identified four distin

Climate change and tuberculosis: enhancing impact through an implementation science informed agenda.

Climate change increasingly threatens progress in tuberculosis (TB) control by exacerbating food insecurity, disrupting health systems, and driving population displacement, particularly in resource-constrained settings. Although a growing body of literature links climate stressors to adverse TB outcomes, most existing research remains descriptive and provides limited guidance on how TB programs can adapt service delivery under worsening environmental conditions. This review examines how implementation science can address this evidence-to-practice gap and advance a climate-adaptive TB agenda. D

Green, renewable, or low-carbon? A framework for informed solvent selection in pharmaceutical sciences.

Pharmaceutical companies have largely committed to achieving net-zero goals with both short-term and long-term science-based targets. At the same time, drug quality, safety and regulatory compliance must continue to be met. While solvent sustainability has been widely discussed, distinctions between intrinsic hazard, feedstock origin, and lifecycle emissions remain unclear in pharmaceutical contexts. One of the largest contributors to environmental impacts within the pharmaceutical supply chain are solvents. These chemicals are a major source of greenhouse gases (GHGs), resource consumption, a

Development of a panel of U.S. adult tobacco users to inform tobacco regulatory science.

The National Panel of Tobacco Consumer Studies (TCS Panel) is a probability-based panel of about 4,000 U.S. adult cigarette, cigar, and smokeless tobacco users developed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Tobacco Products to conduct observational and experimental studies to inform tobacco regulatory activities. This paper describes the methods and characteristics of the current panel. The TCS Panel employed a stratified 4-stage sample design and in-person screening of U.S. sampled households. Selected eligible adults participated in an enrollment interview and completed a ba

Science-informed art as a public health strategy: evaluation of an exhibition on high-concentration cannabis.

BACKGROUND: Science-informed art exhibitions may enhance public understanding of complex health topics by combining artistic expression with evidence-based education. We examined the impact of an art exhibition on knowledge of health risks associated with high-concentration cannabis (HCC), explored which types of artwork had the greatest impact on viewer knowledge, explored motivation for involvement with the exhibition, and assessed media garnered by the exhibition. METHODS: Eleven artists participated in a 3-day educational workshop on HCC before creating artwork for the exhibition. Data so

Drug discovery for parasitic diseases: powered by technology, enabled by pharmacology, informed by clinical science.

While prevention is a bedrock of public health, innovative therapeutics are needed to complement the armamentarium of interventions required to achieve disease control and elimination targets for neglected diseases. Extraordinary advances in drug discovery technologies have occurred over the past decades, along with accumulation of scientific knowledge and experience in pharmacological and clinical sciences that are transforming many aspects of drug R&D across disciplines. We reflect on how these advances have propelled drug discovery for parasitic infections, focusing on malaria, kinetoplasti

Decision Science Can Inform Clinical Trade-Offs Regarding Cardiotoxic Cancer Treatments.

Cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity (ie, heart failure, coronary artery disease, vascular diseases, arrhythmia) is a growing cancer survivorship concern within oncology practice; heart disease is the leading cause of noncancer death in cancer survivors and surpasses cancer as the leading cause of death for some cancers with higher survival rates. The issue of cardiotoxicity introduces a critical tradeoff that must be acknowledged and reconciled in clinical oncology practice: treating cancer aggressively and effectively in the present vs preventing future cardiotoxicity. Although many cance

Using Implementation Science-Informed Strategies to Improve Transitions of Care for Patients with Venous Thromboembolism.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, are common causes of preventable hospital death. Most VTEs diagnosed in the outpatient setting are directly linked to a recent hospitalization or surgery. METHODS: A type 2 effectiveness-implementation hybrid study was conducted to develop and implement targeted interventions to improve care for patients with VTE in six US health systems. Primary outcomes included (1) 7-day follow-up after VTE diagnosis (phone calls, office visits); (2) VTE-related hospitalizations or emergency department (ED) vis
