Mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the infratemporal fossa: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common primary epithelial salivary gland malignancy. It mostly occurs in the major or intraoral minor salivary glands but rarely in the infratemporal fossa. Here, we present a case of aggressive mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the infratemporal fossa with neck lymph node metastasis and also discuss diagnostic and treatment strategies. CASE SUMMARY: A 39-year-old woman with a mass located in the right submandibular area presented to our department. Physical examination revealed lymphadenopathy on the right submandibular side measuring 2.5 cm × 3 cm

Malignant schwannoma of the infratemporal fossa: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant schwannomas or neurofibrosarcomas are rare nerve tumors of unknown etiology. These neoplasms are highly aggressive with a marked propensity for local recurrence and metastatic spread. Their management continues to be a challenge for pathologists and surgeons. Maxillofacial locations are very exceptional. We report the case of a patient with unusual malignant schwannoma of the infratemporal fossa discovered at a late evolving stage. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old woman, of Moroccan nationality, presented to our hospital in 2013 with a large right-sided hemifacial swel

A hydatid cyst in an unusual location-the infratemporal fossa.

Hydatid disease is a considerable health problem worldwide, but hydatid cysts in the infratemporal region are extremely rare, even where the parasite is endemic. Here we report on a 17-year-old female who presented with a benign swelling in the infratemporal fossa. During surgery a cystic mass was discovered and histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of a hydatid cyst. Although rare, a hydatid cyst should be considered in a differential diagnosis of benign swellings in the maxillofacial region. Physicians should exercise a high index of suspicion even in nonendemic locations.

Endoscopic approach to the infratemporal fossa: anatomic study.

OBJECTIVE: Classic surgical exposures of the infratemporal fossa region, including the adjacent intracranial space, temporal bone, and sinonasal region, require the extensive exposure associated with the transcranial, transfacial, and transmandibular approaches with their inherent neurological and cosmetic morbidities. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility and exposure afforded by combining 2 endoscopic transmaxillary approaches, endonasal and Caldwell-Luc supplement, to the infratemporal fossa. METHODS: Endoscopic transmaxillary dissection was performed in 4 formalin-fixed cadaver head

The infratemporal fossa approach to skull base surgery.

The infratemporal fossa approach, in conjunction with the application of microsurgical technique and improved perioperative care, has permitted significant advances in lateral skull base surgery. The glomus jugulare tumor is the prototypical neoplasm resected by this approach, although this technique can be applied to a host of additional benign and malignant lesions of the skull base. This approach entails identification and control of the cranial nerves and great vessels in the neck, anterior transposition of the facial nerve, and infralabyrinthine petrosectomy. Intracranial tumor extension

Infratemporal fossa infection with inferior alveolar nerve involvement.

Abscess of the infratemporal fossa is a rare complication which can be difficult to diagnose. It occurs mostly due to dental infection, tooth extraction, fractures and/or infections involving the maxillary sinus. This condition can be life threatening if not dealt with immediately. The maxillofacial surgeon must be aware of the symptoms and clinical findings of the infection of the infratemporal fossa in order to initiate the treatment as soon as possible. In this case report, a patient with an infratemporal fossa infection presenting with an unusual symptom of inferior alveolar nerve involvem

Rare giant epidermal cyst in the infratemporal fossa and middle cranial fossa.

A 50-year-old man presented with a rare giant crossing cranium-temporal combined epidermal cyst. Physical examination found left facial numbness and temple severely numbness with light pressure. Horizontalis craniocerebral computed tomography demonstrated a mass lesion of 3.0 × 2.0 cm in the middle cranial fossa area; sagittal craniocerebral magnetic resonance scanning demonstrated a mass consisting of 2 leaves (the upper one, 4.0 × 3.0 cm; the lower one, 2.0 × 1.5 cm). Computed tomography angiography showed that the blood supply of the lesion came from superficial temporal artery and middle c

Comparison of the Orbitozygomatic and Transmandibular Approaches to the Infratemporal Fossa.

OBJECTIVE: The infratemporal fossa (ITF) represents a complex anatomical region of critical relevance in skull base surgery, particularly due to its involvement in the extension of neoplastic lesions. Surgical access to this region remains technically demanding. The orbitozygomatic (OZ) and transmandibular (TM) approaches offer distinct anatomical perspectives and operative corridors. This study aimed to anatomically compare these two techniques to delineate their microsurgical fields, advantages, and limitations in accessing the ITF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of five silicone-injected, f

Endonasal endoscopic approach to the pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae.

The pterygopalatine fossa and infratemporal fossa are spaces located under the skull base, housing important neurovascular structures. Surgical access to these spaces is challenging because of their deep location and complex anatomy. Their surgical access has been classically carried out through multiple craniofacial approaches until the advent of endoscopic endonasal surgery at the end of the XXth century. Our goal is to describe the transmaxillary-transsphenoidal-transpterygoid approach to the pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae through endonasal endoscopic surgery based on anatomo-surg

Endoscopic transmaxillary drainage of an infratemporal fossa abscess.

Infratemporal fossa abscess is a rare and challenging condition to diagnose and manage. A few reported cases have been mostly due to odontogenic infections and were managed by external or intraoral drainage. This is the first reported case of an infratemporal fossa abscess that was successfully managed by endoscopic drainage via a transmaxillary approach.

[A pediatric case of hydatid cyst in the infratemporal fossa].

INTRODUCTION: Hydatid cyst or disease is an anthropozoonosis due to the development of the larval form of the taenia Echinococcus granulosus in humans. It is endemic in Morocco. The location of a hydatid cyst in the infratemporal fossa (ITF) is extremely rare. The authors report a pediatric case. OBSERVATION: An 11 year old child was admitted to hospital with a history of left latero-facial swelling gradually increasing in volume for 2 months, CT scan of the face revealed a cystic formation of 7 cm diameter sitting at the left ITF, hydatid serology was negative. A transzygomatic approach allo

Synovial sarcoma of the temporomandibular joint and infratemporal fossa.

OBJECTIVE: Synovial sarcoma in the head and neck region is rare, and is difficult to resect with adequate safety margins because of its anatomical complexity. We herein report our experiences with synovial sarcoma in this region, and review the literature regarding the management of such cases. METHOD: We retrospectively examined four cases of synovial sarcoma arising from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) area and infratemporal fossa. RESULT: Only one patient remains alive without disease, while the other three patients have died. CONCLUSION: The local control of these tumors has improved

Temporal craniotomy for surgical access to the infratemporal fossa.

We propose a surgical approach for select patients that minimizes morbidity while allowing gross total resection of lesions in the anterior portion of the infratemporal fossa. The approach we describe is an extradural approach through a subtemporal craniectomy or craniotomy with the possible addition of a zygomatic osteotomy. Lesions that have a well-defined capsule and a texture that permits manipulation are ideal for this less invasive approach. We retrospectively reviewed six cases from the primary author (C.B.H.) using a temporal craniectomy or craniotomy alone to resect lesions in the inf
