Deaths from bites and stings of venomous animals.

Data abstracted from 34 death certificates indicate that the three venomous animal groups most often responsible for human deaths in California from 1960 through 1976 were Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants and the like) (56 percent), snakes (35 percent) and spiders (6 percent). An average incidence of 2.0 deaths per year occurred during these 17 years, or an average death rate of 0.01 per 100,000 population per year. Nearly three times more males than females died of venomous animal bites and stings. Half of the deaths from venomous snake bites occurred in children younger than 5 years of age. Su

[Sunscreens for UV protection and repellants--who needs what?].

If UV injury of the skin is to be avoided, sun protection by clothing and sunscreen according to the skin type must be employed. Protection against insect stings and bites is provided not only by clothing and mosquito nets but also by suitable repellants, which will depend on the place visited and the user's age.

Immune thrombocytopenia possibly triggered by multiple tick bites.

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune hematological condition characterized by a markedly isolated decrease in platelets without any apparent associated clinical conditions, resulting in bleeding and bruising of the skin, mucous membranes, and major organs. It is often triggered by preceding illness or several immune stimulants such as immunizations, infections, allergic reactions, among others. While uncommon, arthropod bites can trigger acute ITP. Four cases have been reported due to bee stings and insect bites, as well as a case of ITP following honeybee-venom therapy. Here, we rep

A review of venomous animal bites and stings in pregnant patients.

This is a review of Medline and PubMed articles on venomous animal bites and stings during pregnancy reported in English literature from 1966 to 2002. Eighty-five venomous snakebites were reported in pregnant women. Although there are frequent anecdotal reports of scorpion stings in pregnant women, few case reports are documented. Other venomous animal bites or stings to pregnant women that have been reported include spiders, jellyfish, and insects, and these are described. Adverse reproductive and teratogenic effects of venoms on gravid animals are also briefly reviewed. Although uncommon, ve

Osteomyelitis calcaneum due to a scorpion sting.

Children are susceptible to various injuries, including insect bites, and scorpion bites are common in the lower extremity of children in Middle East countries. In most cases, the sting will produce just a local reaction; however, serious complications that can result in death have occurred. In this case report, we describe a case of osteomyelitis of the calcaneum after a scorpion sting.

Case histories of insect- or arachnid-caused human illness.

Insects, arachnids, and other medically important arthropods affect human health directly by bites, stings, and blisters, and indirectly by disease transmission. In this paper, three widely divergent cases of insect- or arachnid-caused human illness are presented--a spider bite, a mosquito-borne disease case, and an imaginary mite problem. Some key references are included for each topic, as well as editorial comment to add perspective.

1990 South Carolina Physician Survey of tick, spider and fire ant morbidity.

A population of 2,366 primary care physicians in South Carolina was surveyed by mail to estimate the number of cases of insect morbidity treated in 1990. A response rate of 42.3 percent was obtained. Cases reported totaled 414 for Rocky Mountain spotted fever, 334 for Lyme disease, 143 black widow and 478 brown recluse spider bites and 4,975 fire ant stings. These are counts of cases from a mail survey, not from a research-based study. Five deaths were also reported; two for Rocky Mountain spotted fever, two due to black widow spider bites and one fire ant anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis in adults referred to a clinical immunology/allergy centre in Singapore.

INTRODUCTION: To study the clinical features and causes of anaphylaxis in consecutive adult patients referred to a clinical immunology/allergy centre in Singapore. METHODS: A retrospective review of 67 consecutive adults with anaphylaxis who presented from July 1, 1998 to February 28, 2002 was performed. Anaphylaxis was defined as a severe life-threatening systemic IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reaction. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced idiosyncratic reactions and other non-IgE mediated reactions were excluded. Hypotension and bronchospasm were not required to make a diagnosis. Th

Allergy to stings and bites from rare or locally important arthropods: Worldwide distribution, available diagnostics and treatment.

Insect venom allergy is the most frequent cause of anaphylaxis in Europe and possibly worldwide. The majority of systemic allergic reactions after insect stings are caused by Hymenoptera, and among these, vespid genera induce most of the systemic sting reactions (SSR). Honey bees are the second leading cause of SSR. Depending on the global region, other Hymenoptera such as different ant genera are responsible for SSR. Widely distributed hornets and bumblebees or local vespid or bee genera rarely induce SSR. Hematophagous insects such as mosquitoes and horse flies usually cause (large) local re

Delayed papular dermatitis after a jellyfish sting.

Dear Editor, Jellyfish stings are among the most common marine envenomations worldwide, particularly in coastal tourist regions. They typically cause immediate pain, erythema, and linear urticarial wheals. Although acute effects are well characterized, delayed cutaneous reactions remain under-recognized. These may occur days to weeks later and often mimic insect bites, eczema, or lichen planus. We report a case of delayed papular dermatitis 10 days after a jellyfish sting and briefly review the literature. [...].

Venomous bites to the external genitalia: an unusual cause of acute scrotum.

The acute scrotum generates a long list of differential diagnoses. An unusual etiology includes insect envenomation, which typically is an acute process with rapid onset of symptomatologies. Two patients with genital envenomation are reported. We review the reported cases at our institution with all types of bites and stings. Symptoms of pain and pruritus, and signs of ecchymosis and edema preceding exfoliating dermatitis were evident in both cases. Mild analgesics and antihistamines promoted resolution in each instance.

Venomous Bites, Stings, and Poisoning: An Update.

This article discusses the epidemiology, prevention, clinical features, and treatment of venomous bites by snakes, lizards, and spiders; stings by fish, jellyfish, echinoderms, insects, and scorpions; and poisoning by ingestion of fish, turtles, and shellfish. Invertebrate stings cause fatalities by anaphylaxis, secondary to acquired hypersensitivity (Hymenoptera, such as bees, wasps, and ants; and jellyfish), and by direct envenoming (scorpions, spiders, jellyfish, and echinoderms). Simple preventive techniques, such as wearing protective clothing, using a flashlight at night, and excluding v

[Insect hypersensitivity in Iceland.].

In this article we review allergic reactions to stinging insects (hymenoptera) and biting insects (mosquitoes). We describe the first proven case of sensitization and anaphylaxis to hymenoptera in an Icelander. Yellow jackets, honeybees, paper wasps and hornets cause most sting reactions. The vespidae species were first seen in Iceland in 1973. Since that time, these insects have inhabited the island in ever increasing numbers. Symptoms range from local reactions to systemic anaphylaxis and even death. Accurate diagnosis is important as treatment with venom immunotherapy can prevent repeated r

Arthropod Envenomation in North America.

Arthropods (phylum Arthopoda) account for a higher percentage of morbidity and mortality to humans than do mammalian bites, snake bites, or marine envenomation. They are ubiquitous in domestic dwellings, caves, and campsites and in wilderness settings such as deserts, forests, and lakes. Although arthropods are most intrusive during warmer months, many are active throughout the winter, particularly indoors. Arthropods are also nocturnal and often bite unsuspecting victims while they are sleeping. Encounters with humans are generally defensive, accidental, or reactive. An individual stung by an

Unraveling Complexities: Rhabdomyolysis, Acute Renal Injury, and Compartment Syndrome Following a Wasp's Sting.

This study delves into the rare occurrence of rhabdomyolysis induced by wasp stings, emphasizing its toxic systemic repercussions. Drawing parallels with documented instances of insect bites worldwide, including those by honey bees and Africanized bees, the research explores the correlation between multiple wasp stings and acute renal failure associated with rhabdomyolysis. The venom's active components, such as amines, kinins, and histamine-releasing peptides, underpin toxic systemic reactions, leading to hemolysis, coagulopathy, and severe cytotoxicity-induced acute renal failure. Brachial artery thrombosis following bee sting, case report.

INTRODUCTION: Bee stings are the most common among insect emergencies. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a 47-year-old male patient who was admitted to the emergency department with complaints of pallor, chills, numbness and bruising on the left palm one hour after a bee sting on his left leg, and a very rare case of brachial artery stenosis in Dopler ultrasonography. DISCUSSION: Often bee stings occur only with local allergic reactions; sometimes it can also cause myocardial infarction, pulmonary edema, bleeding, hemolytic anemia, and kidney disease and neurological manifestations. Clinical reactivity to insect stings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Allergy to insect stings remains a hazard worldwide and is the object of updated guidelines on management. This paper reviews the various clinical responses that may occur following an insect sting. RECENT FINDINGS: Although the general population is at slight risk, certain groups are more susceptible, including occasionally stung adult male agricultural workers, hobby honey beekeepers and family members of beekeepers. Individuals with systemic mastocytosis are especially reactive to stings. The body of evidence attesting to the marked beneficial effect that 3-5 years of ve

Ant-induced alopecia: report of 2 cases and review of the literature.

Localized scalp hair loss is associated with many processes, including alopecia areata, trichotillomania, tinea capitis, and early lupus erythematosus. There are several reports of localized alopecia after tick- and flea-bites and bee stings, but there are only two reports of ant-induced alopecia in the literature. We present two cases of alopecia induced by ants of genus Pheidole (species pallidula) and review the literature for insect-induced alopecia. Ant-induced alopecia should be considered in the differential diagnosis of localized sudden-onset alopecia, at least in some geographic areas

Sporotrichosis following a rodent bite. A case report.

A ten year old boy developed lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis following a wild rodent bite. The infection was successfully treated with potassium iodide. Sporotrichosis in humans has followed bites, pecks and stings inflicted by a variety of animals, birds and insects. Many species of animals are susceptible to infection by Sporothrix schenkii, but transmission from infected animals to man is uncommon.
