BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are the staple of malaria vector control. Given their importance, insecticide resistance (IR) is extremely concerning. Understanding how ITNs simultaneously impact the evolution of IR and malaria control is of critical importance, especially with next-generation mixture ITNs (NGM-ITNs) becoming available.
METHOD: We developed a mosquito population dynamics and genetics model to explore the simultaneous impact of ITNs on both malaria transmission (measured as vectorial capacity, an entomological measure of transmission) and IR evolution (resistance g

Chemical pesticides are still commonly used in Thailand for control of agricultural pests and disease vectors. Organophosphates, carbamates and synthetic pyrethroids are commonly used for agricultural purposes, whereas synthetic pyrethroids have become more popular and predominate for public health use. The genetic selection of insecticide resistance (whether physiological, biochemical or behavioral) in pests and disease vectors has been extensively reported worldwide (Brown and Pal, 1971). The long-term intensive use of chemical pesticides to control insect pests and disease vectors is often

Vector mosquito control is an integral part of malaria control. The global emergence of insecticide resistance in malaria-transmitting Anophelines has become an impediment and has created an urgent need for novel mosquito control approaches. Here, we show that a biopesticide derived from the soil-dwelling bacterium Chromobacterium sp. Panama (Csp_P) kills insecticide-resistant Anopheles mosquitoes, regardless of their resistance mechanisms. In addition, sublethal dose of Csp_P acts as a synergist to now used chemical insecticides across multiple classes. Moreover, Csp_P reduces host-seeking be

From 2003 until 2018, a total of 12 outbreaks with 1,654 confirmed dengue cases have been reported in Zhejiang Province. The emergence of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes will affect the control of dengue. Our study aims to investigate the current situation of insecticide resistance of Ae. albopictus in Zhejiang Province and compares it with the situation in 2016. Ae. albopictus were collected from 12 Zhejiang Province cities in 2019. Resistance to three major categories of insecticides, including 8 commonly used insecticides, was evaluated according to the tube test protocol recommended b

Susceptibility tests carried out since 1974 in both the field and the laboratory with Anopheles sacharovi, A. hyrcanus and A. maculipennis from Turkey have revealed resistance to organophosphate and carbamate insecticides in all three species, in the first two in the southern Chukurova plain and in the third in the northern area around Osmanjik. Resistance was indicated by significant survivals when exposed to dosages killing presumed susceptible strains of these and other anopheline species. The temperature at which the susceptibility tests were carried out had a marked influence on mortaliti

In spite of widespread resistance of the sheep blowfly to organophosphorus insecticides, they are still widely relied upon in Austrialia. Hybrid-resistant blowfly larvae do not produce fly-strike as readily as pure-resistant larvae so more attention should be paid to the use of biological, rather than chemical, control, wherever possible.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles albimanus, Anopheles darlingi, Anopheles dirus, and Anopheles punctipennis are key malaria vectors across multiple regions. Insecticide resistance especially to organochlorines poses a major challenge to vector control. While knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations are a well-known resistance mechanism, evidence in these species remains inconclusive. This study systematically reviewed the presence of kdr mutations associated with organochlorine resistance in these four Anopheles species.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Six in

BACKGROUND: Current strategies to control mosquito-transmitted infections use insecticides targeted at various stages of the mosquito life-cycle. Control is increasingly compromised by the evolution of insecticide resistance but there is little quantitative understanding of its impact on control effectiveness. We developed a computational approach that incorporates the stage-structured mosquito life-cycle and allows tracking of insecticide resistant genotypes. This approach makes it possible to simultaneously investigate: (i) the population dynamics of mosquitoes throughout their whole life-cy

DDT exemplifies success and failure of modern science and technology. Once it was heralded as technological wonder that will deliver human from misery of insect-borne infectious disease. However DDT took dramatic downturn after failure in global malaria eradication program initiated by World Health Organization, with advent of DDT-resistant strain of mosquitoes. Although insecticide resistance has been know since late 19th century, the definitions and mythologies for finding resistance has not been settled until 1950s. This paper argues that discovery of DDT-resistant strain of body lice in pr

Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of arboviruses such as dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya. Here, we investigate the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) structure and insecticide resistance of Ae. aegypti populations across Kenya. Using 175 newly sequenced Kenyan COI mtDNA fragments, along with global reference sequences, we assess maternal ancestry and phylogeographic structure. Genetic structure across Kenya was not well explained by isolation-by-distance alone, with several populations deviating from this pattern. Nairobi and Mombasa, separated by >400 km, showed greater maternal genetic

BACKGROUND: With no effective drugs or widely available vaccines, dengue control in Bangladesh is dependent on targeting the primary vector Aedes aegypti with insecticides and larval source management. Despite these interventions, the dengue burden is increasing in Bangladesh, and the country experienced its worst outbreak in 2019 with 101 354 hospitalized cases. This may be partially facilitated by the presence of intense insecticide resistance in vector populations. Here, we describe the intensity and mechanisms of resistance to insecticides commonly deployed against Ae. aegypti in Dhaka, Ba

BACKGROUND: The increasing insecticide resistance of Aedes albopictus puts many countries in Asia and Africa, including China, at great risk of a mosquito-borne virus epidemic. To date, a growing number of researches have focused on the relationship between intestinal symbiotic bacteria and their hosts' resistance to insecticides. This provides a novel aspect to the study of resistant mechanisms.
METHODS/FINDINGS: This study reveals significant composition and dynamic changes in the intestinal symbiotic bacteria of Ae. albopictus between the resistant and susceptible strains based on full-len

Insecticide treatment resistance is considered to be a major factor in the increasing number of infestations by head lice. The large insecticide selection pressure induced by conventional topical pediculicides has led to the emergence and spread of resistance in many parts of the world. Possible mechanisms of resistance include accelerated detoxification of insecticides by enzyme-mediated reduction, esterification, oxidation that may be overcome by synergistic agents such as piperonyl butoxide, alteration of the binding site, e.g. altered acetylcholinesterase or altered nerve voltage-gated sod

Insecticide resistance (IR) is one of the major obstacles in insect pests and insect borne disease control strategies, the mechanism of which is known to be genetically controlled. Three major gene families (CYP, GST and COE) have been identified encoding various proteins to metabolize endogenous as well as exogenous compounds that are responsible for IR mechanisms in insects. Understanding evolutionary patterns of genes of such important functions could lead to important understanding, based on which, further studies to control various insect borne infectious diseases could be initiated. We h

Strategies to eradicate the vector-borne infectious diseases (e.g. malaria and Japanese encephalitis) are often directed at controlling vectors with insecticides. Spraying insecticide, however, opens the way for the development of insecticide resistance in vectors, which may lead to the failure of disease control. In this paper, we examine whether the combined use of insecticide spray and zooprophylaxis can limit the development of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes. Zooprophylaxis refers to the control of vector-borne diseases by attracting vectors to domestic animals in which the pathogen

Insecticide-based interventions such as IRS and LLINs have significantly reduced malaria transmission globally. However, their sustainability is increasingly threatened by insecticide resistance. While insecticide and pesticide use are known resistance drivers, the role of environmental contaminants remains underexplored. This study investigated the impact of environmental contaminants on insecticide resistance by sampling Anopheles larvae from six sites in Ghana, including petroleum spill sites, mining areas and industrial zones. WHO bioassays revealed resistance to clothianidin (Mortality ra

BACKGROUND: In Malaysia, dengue remains a top priority disease and usage of insecticides is the main method for dengue vector control. Limited baseline insecticide resistance data in dengue hotspots has prompted us to conduct this study. The present study reports the use of a map on the insecticide susceptibility status of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus to provide a quick visualization and overview of the distribution of insecticide resistance.
METHOD AND RESULTS: The insecticide resistance status of Aedes populations collected from 24 dengue hotspot areas from the period of December 2018
