Incidence and consequences of damage to insecticide-treated mosquito nets in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Efforts to improve the impact of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) should be informed by understanding of the causes of decay in effect. Holes in LLINs have been estimated to account for 7-11% of loss in effect on vectorial capacity for Plasmodium falciparum malaria in an analysis of repeated cross-sectional surveys of LLINs in Kenya. This does not account for the effect of holes as a cause of net attrition or non-use, which cannot be measured using only cross-sectional data. There is a need for estimates of how much these indirect effects of physical damage on use and attriti

Durability, household usage and washing pattern of DuraNet© and Interceptor® long-lasting insecticidal nets in long-term field trials in India.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Universal coverage of population with long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) living in endemic areas inhabited by ethnic tribal communities or in difficult to reach areas was found effective for disease control where other interventions such as indoor residual spraying have limited success because of operational issues. Evaluation of different LLINs with varied insecticides and fabrics are being evaluated to meet the demand of new products. This study was undertaken on two brands of LLINs, DuraNet© and Interceptor® that varied in fabric and manufacturing technologies t

Assessment of analytical methods to determine pyrethroids content of bednets.

OBJECTIVE: To present and evaluate simple, cost-effective tests to determine the amount of insecticide on treated materials. METHODS: We developed and evaluated a competitive immunoassay on two different platforms: a label-free impedimetric biosensor (EIS biosensor) and a lateral flow. Both approaches were validated by gas chromatography (GC) and ELISA, gold standards for analytical methods and immunoassays, respectively. Finally, commercially available pyrethroid-treated ITN samples were analysed. Different extraction methods were evaluated. RESULTS: Insecticide extraction by direct infusio

The lead-up to epidemic transmission: malaria trends and control interventions in Burundi 2000 to 2019.

Burundi has experienced an increase in malaria cases since 2000, reaching 843,000 cases per million inhabitants in 2019, a more than twofold increase compared to the early 2000s. Burundi thus contrasts the decreasing number of cases in many other African countries. To evaluate the impact of malaria control on this increase, data on interventions from 2000 to 2019 were compiled. Over this period, the number of health facilities increased threefold, and the number of tests 20-fold. The test positivity rate remained stable at around 50-60% in most years. Artemisinin-based combination therapy was

Laboratory evaluation of Fendona 6SC treated bednets and Interceptor long-lasting nets against Anopheles gambiae s.l. in Burkina Faso.

Insecticide-treated bednets play a cornerstone role in the efforts to control malaria. Bednets entomological efficacy is the determinant factor of their use to control malaria. In this study, we compared under laboratory conditions, the efficacy of two long-lasting nets (PermaNet versus Interceptor) and two treatments kits K-O TAB (deltamethrin) versus Fendona 6SC (alpha-cypermethrin) against Anopheles gambiae s.l. malaria vectors. The efficacy of washed and unwashed bednets was assessed by contact bioassays using World Health Organization (WHO) cones. Three to five-days-old mosquitoes were ex

Insecticide-treated net distribution in Western Kenya: impacts related to COVID-19 and health worker strikes.

We examined the impact of coronavirus disease (COVID) mitigation, supply and distribution interruptions on the delivery of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) in Western Kenya. The median monthly distribution of LLINs declined during COVID mitigation strategies (March-July 2020) and during the health worker strikes (December 2020-February 2021). Recovery periods followed initial declines, indicative of a 'catching up' on missed routine distribution. Mass community campaigns were delayed by 10 months. These observations offer encouragement for routine net distribution resilience, but

Reported reasons for non-use of insecticide-treated nets in large national household surveys, 2009-2021.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITN) are the cornerstone of modern malaria vector control, with nearly 3 billion ITNs delivered to households in endemic areas since 2000. ITN access, i.e. availability within the household, based on the number of ITNs and number of household members, is a pre-requisite for ITN use. Factors determining ITN use are frequently examined in published literature, but to date, large household survey data on reasons given for non-use of nets have not been explored. METHODS: A total of 156 DHS, MIS, and MICS surveys conducted between 2003 and 2021 were reviewed f

Where did the nets go? Tracing long-lasting insecticidal net migration on Bioko Island.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are commonly distributed through mass distribution campaigns (MDCs). MDCs are often followed by substantial loss of LLINs, affecting coverage. Here, data from an MDC and a malaria indicator survey (MIS) on Bioko Island were used to characterize LLIN mobility. METHODS: Between October 2014 and July 2015, an MDC reached most of the households of the island. All nets distributed were marked with a unique code corresponding to the community where they were distributed. An MIS conducted in August and September 2015 allowed to measure LLIN loss and

Heterogeneity of use, access, and retention of insecticide-treated nets: Implications for subnational tailoring to maximise malaria control.

BACKGROUND: While insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are highly impactful and cost-effective for malaria control, they are primarily distributed through three-yearly mass campaigns yet are typically retained for shorter periods. It is unclear whether disease control could be best improved with more efficacious ITNs and/or increased distribution frequency. There are increased calls to optimise resources through subnational tailoring of interventions, though benefits will depend on how long people use ITNs and how this varies between regions; yet this has not been previously quantified subnationall

Influence of testing modality on bioefficacy for the evaluation of Interceptor® G2 mosquito nets to combat malaria mosquitoes in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated net (ITN) durability is evaluated using longitudinal bioefficacy and fabric integrity sampling post-distribution. Interceptor® G2 was developed for resistance management and contains two adulticides: alpha-cypermethrin and chlorfenapyr; it is a pro-insecticide that is metabolized into its active form by mosquito-detoxifying enzymes and may be enhanced when the mosquito is physiologically active. To elucidate the impact of bioassay modality, mosquito exposures of the alphacypermethrin ITN Interceptor® and dual adulticide Interceptor® G2 were investigated. METHOD

Reduced bioefficacy of used LLINs against natural populations of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato in the centre and east regions of Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are crucial for malaria prevention in Cameroon, yet their operational performance may be compromised because of deterioration of the physical integrity and bioefficacy of nets. This study evaluated LLINs, physical integrity, and bioefficacy following mass distribution campaigns in two regions in Cameroon: East (Bertoua) and Centre (Eyang). METHODS: Household surveys were conducted to assess ITN ownership, usage patterns, and maintenance practices. Net condition was measured using the proportionate hole index (pHI), and bio-efficacy was assess

Do long-lasting insecticidal nets retain their efficacy after three years of usage in Afghanistan? Findings from a study on survivorship, physical integrity, insecticidal activity and wash resistance.

BACKGROUND: Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) are effective malaria prevention tools. However, information is limited about their durability and wash resistance in field circumstances, especially in seasonal transmission areas in South Asia. This study comprised a systematic examination of usage, physical integrity and insecticidal activity of LLINs in households in Afghanistan, three years after distribution. METHODS: In 2014, 500 households in 5 malaria endemic Afghan provinces (Balkh, Herat, Khost, Kunduz and Nangarhar) that had received LLINs (PermaNet 2.0) three years earlier were r

Inferring the epidemiological benefit of indoor vector control interventions against malaria from mosquito data.

The cause of malaria transmission has been known for over a century but it is still unclear whether entomological measures are sufficiently reliable to inform policy decisions in human health. Decision-making on the effectiveness of new insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and the indoor residual spraying of insecticide (IRS) have been based on epidemiological data, typically collected in cluster-randomised control trials. The number of these trials that can be conducted is limited. Here we use a systematic review to highlight that efficacy estimates of the same intervention may vary substantially

Combined pyrethroid and carbamate 'two-in-one' treated mosquito nets: field efficacy against pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus.

A new approach is proposed in the treatment of mosquito nets, using a 'two-in-one' combination of pyrethroid and non-pyrethroid insecticides applied to different parts of bednets. The objectives are mainly to overcome certain limitations of pyrethroid-impregnated bednets currently recommended for malaria control purposes. Apart from developing alternatives to pyrethroid dependency, we sought to counteract pyrethroid irritant effects on mosquitoes (excito-repellency) and resistance to pyrethroids. The idea takes advantage of the presumed host-seeking behaviour of mosquitoes confronted by a net

Repellency and toxicity of long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets (LLINs) to bed bugs.

Vector control is essential for eliminating malaria, a vector-borne parasitic disease responsible for over half a million deaths annually. Success of vector control programs hinges on community acceptance of products like long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs). Communities in malaria-endemic regions often link LLIN efficacy to their ability to control indoor pests such as bed bugs (Cimex lectularius L. and Cimex hemipterus (F.)) (Hemiptera: Cimicidae). Despite this, little is known about the potential repellent effects and toxicity of LLINs to bed bugs. Herein, we demonstrate for the fi

Costs of single-phase door-to-door insecticide-treated net mass distribution campaigns in Nigeria: a case study in Ondo and Anambra states.

BACKGROUND: The distribution of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) through mass campaigns remains a cornerstone of malaria vector control. As new ITN products are introduced to address rising insecticide resistance, understanding the cost of such campaigns is essential for informed policy decisions. This study aimed to estimate the programmatic and annualized economic costs of campaigns that distributed pyrethroid-PBO ITNs in Ondo and Anambra States, Nigeria, using a single-phase, door-to-door strategy. METHODS: A micro-costing approach was used to estimate campaign economic costs from the provi
