Metarhizium spp. extracts alter the morphology of the integument and ovary of deltamethrin-resistant Rhipicephalus microplus.

The indiscriminate use of synthetic acaricides in the control of Rhipicephalus microplus ticks results in the accumulation of residues in animal products and the environment, and favors the emergence of resistant strains, making it necessary to develop new control alternatives. Extracts of Metarhizium anisopliae (MA) and M. robertsii (MR) represent a promising strategy, as they contain biodegradable and specific compounds, such as enzymes. This study evaluated the effects of active and denatured extracts of MA and MR, isolated or combined with deltamethrin, on the mortality and morphology of t

Organizational principles of integumentary organs: Maximizing variations for effective adaptation.

The integument serves as the interface between an organism and its environment. It primarily comprises ectoderm-derived epithelium and mesenchyme derived from various embryonic sources. These integumentary organs serve as a barrier defining the physiological boundary between the internal and exterior environments and fulfill diverse functions. How does the integument generate such a large diversity? Here, we attempt to decipher the organizational principles. We focus on amniotes and use appendage follicles as the primary examples. The integument begins as a simple planar sheet of coupled epith

Histological variability in fossil and recent alligatoroid osteoderms: systematic and functional implications.

Statements about morphological variation in extinct taxa often suffer from insufficient sampling that can be remedied by taking advantage of larger sample sizes provided by related, extant taxa. This analysis quantitatively and qualitatively examines histological and morphological variation of osteoderms from extant and extinct alligatoroid specimens. Statistically significant differences were correlated with changes in osteoderm size and shape. These differences are independent of position on the body, taxonomy, or evolution. Histological variation in alligatoroid osteoderms is due to morphol

A preliminary study to understand the effect of Fasciola hepatica tegument on naïve macrophages and humoral responses in an ovine model.

Fasciola hepatica, the liver fluke, is a highly evolved endo-parasite that uses various mechanisms to evade the host immune system. The immunosuppressive capabilities of the parasite's excretory/secretory products have been well demonstrated by previous independent studies. However, the role of the parasite's tegument in the immune responses remains to be investigated. In this study, the effect of the tegument and other fractions of adult F. hepatica (excretory/secretory, liver fluke homogenate and liver fluke homogenate without tegument) in the activation of naïve macrophages in vitro was inv

Fluazuron-induced morphological changes in Rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille, 1806 (Acari: Ixodidae) nymphs: An ultra-structural evaluation of the cuticle formation and digestive processes.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus is a species of tick which is widely distributed in America, Africa and Australia and is probably the most prevalent among all the other ixodid tick species. The present study demonstrated the effects of the arthropod growth regulator fluazuron (Acatak(®)), in the formation of the integument and the digestive processes of R. sanguineus nymphs fed on rabbits treated with different doses of this chemical acaricide. For this, three different doses of fluazuron (20mg/kg, 40mg/kg and 80mg/kg) were applied "pour on" to the hosts divided into three different treated-groups (I

Hair transplantation between identical twins.

Hair transplantation between monozygotic twins was used to repair a marked congenital, nonprogressive alopecia of the scalp. The alopecia was due to a follicular aplasia that, along with several other abnormalities of the integumentary system, affected only one of the twins. This case represents a unique application of isograft transplantation.

Adaptive Features of the Avian Integument: A Comparative Study of the Laughing Dove, Quail, Muscovy Duck, With Emphasis on the Preen Gland Secretions and Associated Microbial Communities.

The current work compared the integumentary architecture and feather microbiomes among three avian species inhabiting different ecological niches: the aerial laughing dove (Spilopelia senegalensis), the terrestrial quail (Coturnix coturnix), and the semi-aquatic Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata). Histological, histochemical, and microbial analyses revealed clear interspecific variations that appear to be associatedwith the distinct lifestyles of the examined species. The laughing dove exhibited the thinnest skin, numerous Herbst corpuscles, and a pigmented epidermis, features related to the aeri

Concentration-dependent effects of acute and chronic neonicotinoid exposure on the behaviour and development of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.

BACKGROUND: Neonicotinoid insecticides are under review owing to emerging toxicity to non-target species. Interest has focused on biological pollinators while their effects on other organisms that are key contributors to the ecosystem remain largely unknown. To advance this, we have tested the effects of representatives of three major classes of neonicotinoids, thiacloprid, clothianidin and nitenpyram, on the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), as a representative of the Nematoda, an ecologically important phylum contributing to biomass. RESULTS: Concentrations that are

Avian skin development and the evolutionary origin of feathers.

The discovery of several dinosaurs with filamentous integumentary appendages of different morphologies has stimulated models for the evolutionary origin of feathers. In order to understand these models, knowledge of the development of the avian integument must be put into an evolutionary context. Thus, we present a review of avian scale and feather development, which summarizes the morphogenetic events involved, as well as the expression of the beta (beta) keratin multigene family that characterizes the epidermal appendages of reptiles and birds. First we review information on the evolution of

Seizures as Presenting Complaint of Cerebral Cortex Involvement in Leprosy.

Leprosy, recognized as one of the ancient diseases, predominantly affects the integumentary system and peripheral nerves. Nevertheless, central nervous system (CNS) involvement is a rare occurrence, with cortical manifestations being exceedingly infrequent. We present a case that aligns with this rarity, showcasing diffuse hyperintensities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within the cortical region of the brain. The patient's clinical presentation was marked by seizures, necessitating targeted therapeutic interventions.

Structure and fracture resistance of alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula) armored fish scales.

The alligator gar is a large fish with flexible armor consisting of ganoid scales. These scales contain a thin layer of ganoine (microhardness ~2.5 GPa) and a bony body (microhardness ~400 MPa), with jagged edges that provide effective protection against predators. We describe here the structure of both ganoine and bony foundation and characterize the mechanical properties and fracture mechanisms. The bony foundation is characterized by two components: a mineralized matrix and parallel arrays of tubules, most of which contain collagen fibers. The spacing of the empty tubules is ~60 μm; the spa

The joint battle to tackle epidermolysis bullosa through gene therapy.

Efforts are dedicated to definitively tackle skin lesions plaguing patients with epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a devastating genetic disorder affecting the integumentary system. Both in vivo gene therapy, as recently reported by Gurevich et al., and combined ex vivo cell and gene therapy strategies are under investigation. Here, we address the advantages and disadvantages of these different approaches.

Crocodile-like sensory scales in a Late Jurassic theropod dinosaur.

Early in amniote evolution, epidermal scales evolved in stem reptiles as an efficient barrier against water loss and ultraviolet radiation, making them a key development in the transition to a fully terrestrial existence [1]. Accordingly, epidermal scales are not simple inert structures but highly-evolved organs suited to perform a broad suite of functions. Here, we provide new data on the epidermal complexity of a non-avian theropod, Juravenator starki, from the Torleite Formation (upper Kimmeridgian), Bavaria, Germany [2]. Although epidermal scales have been noted previously on the tail of J

Post-embryonic changes in the hindgut of honeybee Apis mellifera workers: Morphology, cuticle deposition, apoptosis, and cell proliferation.

In insects, the hindgut is a homeostatic region of the digestive tract, divided into pylorus, ileum, and rectum, that reabsorbs water, ions, and small molecules produced during hemolymph filtration. The hindgut anatomy in bee larvae is different from that of adult workers. This study reports the morphological changes and cellular events that occur in the hindgut during the metamorphosis of the honeybee Apis mellifera. We describe the occurrence of autophagosomes and the ultrastructure of the epithelial cells and cuticle, suggesting that cuticular degradation begins in prepupae, with the cuticl

Topical Medical Cannabis: A New Treatment for Wound Pain-Three Cases of Pyoderma Gangrenosum.

Pain associated with integumentary wounds is highly prevalent, yet it remains an area of significant unmet need within health care. Currently, systemically administered opioids are the mainstay of treatment. However, recent publications are casting opioids in a negative light given their high side effect profile, inhibition of wound healing, and association with accidental overdose, incidents that are frequently fatal. Thus, novel analgesic strategies for wound-related pain need to be investigated. The ideal methods of pain relief for wound patients are modalities that are topical, lack system
