Intellectual disability and the prison setting.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of intellectual disability (ID) in the prison setting has scarcely been studied. Although some approximations or estimates regarding people with intellectual disabilities have been performed in Spain, there is little in the way of reliable data. OBJECTIVES: 1) To determine the prevalence of ID in a sample population in the residential modules of a Spanish prison, 2) Obtain data on the prevalence of ID in prison psychiatric units and hospitals. METHODS: 1) A TONI II test was performed on a sub-sample (n = 398) of a prevalence study in Spanish prisons to identify i

Keratoplasty in patients with intellectual disability.

PURPOSE: The aim was to report the outcome of keratoplasty in patients with intellectual disability (ID). METHODS: All patients with ID who had undergone keratoplasty at the Eye Department, Red Cross Hospital, Munich, between January 1, 1991, and December 31, 2010, were identified and recalled for examination. In cases of missing data, the information contained in the patient's chart was analyzed and/or his ophthalmologist was contacted. RESULTS: A total of 38 eyes (29 patients) that had undergone 53 keratoplasty procedures were included in the analysis. In 20 patients, the general diagnosis

Aberrant epigenetic landscape in intellectual disability.

In recent decades, epigenetics has emerged as a broad-ranging regulatory layer that modulates the whole genome and transcriptome. It largely determines the firing of transcription start sites, the splicing processes, and the binding of transcription factors, among many other processes. Its wide spectrum of action has provided us with the keys to new doors to investigate many diseases, including intellectual disability syndromes. The involvement of epigenetic factors in Rett syndrome is already well established, and its involvement in alpha-thalassemia/mental retardation-X-linked and Rubinstein

Prescriptions for Antipsychotics: Youth with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities Compared to Youth without Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare antipsychotic use by youth with intellectual/developmental disabilities to youth without IDD as they transitioned from pediatric to adult health care services. In addition, antipsychotic use was compared between youth with different types of IDD (autism, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Down syndrome and 'other'). METHODS: Population level administrative health data was used to compare the dispensing of antipsychotics for youth aged 15 to 24 years with and without IDD, between 2010 and 2019. Because antipsychotics are associated with metabolic syndrome

Differences in the intellectual profile of children with intellectual vs. learning disability.

The WISC-IV was used to compare the intellectual profile of two groups of children, one with specific learning disorders (SLDs), the other with intellectual disabilities (ID), with a view to identifying which of the four main factor indexes and two additional indexes can distinguish between the groups. We collected information on WISC-IV scores for 267 children (Mage=10.61 [SD=2.51], range 6-16 years, females=99) with a diagnosis of either SLD or ID. Children with SLD performed better than those with ID in all measures. Only the SLD children, not the ID children, revealed significant differenc

[Electroconvulsive therapy in people with intellectual disability].

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective treatment option for severe mental illness. Although people with intellectual disability (ID) have similar prevalence rates of mental disorders in comparison to the general population their access to ECT remains challenging. A systematic literature review was carried out on treatment with ECT in patients with ID and a case report on a patient with ID who underwent ECT is presented, to highlight a typical clinical routine. A total of 100 articles with 208 different case reports were retrieved. In summary, the results underline the effectiven

Personality Disorders in Patients with Intellectual Disability.

Both individuals with intellectual disability (ID) and individuals with personality disorders represent populations that require unique interactions with healthcare providers and consist of high utilizers of the healthcare system. The intersectionality of these diagnoses poses further considerations in diagnosis and management. This article describes two fictional case studies intended to illustrate, examine, and identify symptomology of individuals with these comorbid diagnoses and establish recommendations for evidence-based management of these individuals. While personality disorders should

Menstrual issues for women with intellectual disability.

The approach to menstrual management in girls with intellectual disabilities should be the same as it is for other girls. Advice may need to be tailored according to the severity of the disability. Girls who can manage their own toilet hygiene can usually learn to manage their menses independently. They need preparation for the menarche with information appropriate to their level of understanding. When assessing menstrual problems, it may help to chart any symptoms against the menstrual cycle to confirm that they are related. The management options for problems such as dysmenorrhoea or heavy b

IQSEC2 and X-linked syndromal intellectual disability.

Despite the recent acceleration in the discovery of genetic risk factors for intellectual disability (ID), the genetic etiology of ID is unknown in approximately half of cases and remains a major frontier of genetics in medicine and psychiatry. The distinction between syndromal and nonsyndromal forms of ID is of great clinical importance, but the boundary between these clinical entities is difficult to ascertain for many genes of interest. ID is more common in men than in women, but the genetic explanation of this sex asymmetry is incompletely understood. This Review systematically examines th

POGZ truncating alleles cause syndromic intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Large-scale cohort-based whole exome sequencing of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) has identified numerous novel candidate disease genes; however, detailed phenotypic information is often lacking in such studies. De novo mutations in pogo transposable element with zinc finger domain (POGZ) have been identified in six independent and diverse cohorts of individuals with NDDs ranging from autism spectrum disorder to developmental delay. METHODS: Whole exome sequencing was performed on five unrelated individuals. Sanger sequencing was used to validate variants and

Intellectual disability and epilepsy in down syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Down Syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic cause of mental retardation, with a reported frequency of epilepsy between 1.4-17% (1). There is a paucity of data in the literature regarding epilepsy in Down syndrome and its relation to intellectual disability. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this article is to analyze the association of epilepsy in children with DS - frequency and type of seizures, treatment, outcome and to compare cognitive impairment of children with DS and epilepsy and DS without epilepsy from our cohort. METHODS: A four years systematic retrospective analysis of th

Deregulated mTOR-mediated translation in intellectual disability.

Local translation of dendritic mRNAs is a key aspect of dendrite and spine morphogenesis and synaptic plasticity, two phenomena generally compromised in intellectual disability disorders. Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is a protein kinase involved in a plethora of functions including dendritogenesis, plasticity and the regulation of local translation. Hence, this kinase may well be implicated in intellectual disability. Hyperactivation of mTOR has been recently reported in mouse models of Fragile X and tuberous sclerosis, two important causes of intellectual disability. Moreover, local d

Reversible autism and intellectual disability in children.

Studies on young children with reversible autism and intellectual disability are discussed. Present evidence suggests a clear cause in a minority of cases including early institutionalization, Landau and Kleffner syndrome, and other early onset epilepsies, intrauterine rubella, and blindness. The majority of cases have normal laboratory results and some have early onset Tourette syndrome. Preliminary data of a follow-up study of this last group are reported in 15 patients suggesting the possibility of two subgroups, one represented by early onset Tourette syndrome phenotype, characterized by a

Breast awareness within an intellectual disability setting.

PURPOSE: This study sought to examine proficiency, motivation and knowledge regarding breast cancer screening and awareness of nurses working within an Intellectual Disability setting. Additionally, the study aimed to examine and establish associations between nurses' personal and professional breast awareness practices. Breast cancer generally affects women between 50 and 65 years and is one of the principal causes of female deaths. Many women with intellectual disability are placed in the "at risk" age group for developing breast cancer due to increased life expectancy. However, breast cance

Psychiatric disorders in children with intellectual disability.

We investigated psychiatric disorders in intellectually disabled children; the prevalence rate and types of psychiatric disorders, and the association of psychiatric disorders with sex, residence type, level of disability, and epilepsy were examined. The population comprised 155 intellectually disabled children. Medical information was obtained from case files, which indicated that a psychiatric disorder had previously been diagnosed for 11% of patients. A careful re-examination of the case files revealed a psychiatric disorder for 33%. The criteria of a psychiatric ICD-10 diagnosis were fulfi

Intellectual disability rates among male prison inmates.

While only a small percentage of people with intellectual disabilities are responsible for criminal behaviors, the literature points to their overrepresentation in prisons, although not enough attention has been paid to intellectual disability data for inmates. We retrieved studies - in English, Spanish, Italian or French and indexed in Medline between 2000 and 2018 - that provided intellectual disability data for prisons collected by the administration of validated tests to male inmates. Identified were 13 studies involving more than 15,000 inmates referring to intellectual disability and bor
