The psychometric properties of the Hospital Anxiety and Depressions Scale adapted for use with people with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing recognition of depression in people with intellectual disabilities (ID). There is a need to develop well-standardised self-report measures for both clinical and research purposes. This paper presents some psychometric properties of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) adapted for use with people with ID. The anhedonic emphasis in the depression scale of the HADS may be particularly useful for people with ID who present with high rates of physical co-morbidity. METHOD: A total of 197 people with ID completed an adapted HADS; 32 participants also comp

Gain of channel function and modified gating properties in TRPM3 mutants causing intellectual disability and epilepsy.

Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE) are a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by epilepsy with comorbid intellectual disability. Recently, two de novo heterozygous mutations in the gene encoding TRPM3, a calcium permeable ion channel, were identified as the cause of DEE in eight probands, but the functional consequences of the mutations remained elusive. Here we demonstrate that both mutations (V990M and P1090Q) have distinct effects on TRPM3 gating, including increased basal activity, higher sensitivity to stimulation by the endogenous neurosteroid pregnenolone sulfa

Psychometric properties of the Chinese Behavior Problems Inventory-01 in children and adolescents with or at risk for intellectual disabilities.

As the world's most populous country, China is likely to have the highest number of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) in the world. As many people with ID are susceptible to serious and persistent behavior problems, research by Chinese scientists on this public health issue is needed. However, there are only very few reliable Chinese-language behavior assessment instruments for problem behaviors. To fill this gap we translated the Behavior Problems Inventory-01 (BPI-01; Rojahn, Matson, Lott, Esbensen, & Smalls, 2001) into Chinese. The BPI-01 is an informant-based behavior rating instr

Function of the material-tissue interface in peripheral nerve regeneration: physical and chemical properties, functionalization and intellectualization.

Peripheral nerve injury represents a major clinical challenge in orthopedics, severely compromising patients' quality of life, and still lacks ideal curative approaches. The emergence of tissue-engineered nerve grafts has provided novel strategies for peripheral nerve repair. During nerve regeneration, the material-tissue interface serves as a pivotal communication bridge between exogenous materials and biological tissues. By transmitting physical, chemical, and biological signals, it modulates the microenvironment for nerve regeneration, thereby significantly influencing repair outcomes. The

Psychometric Properties of Spanish Adaptation of the PDD-MRS Scale in Adults with Intellectual Developmental Disorders: The EVTEA-DI Scale.

Strategies for the early detection of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in people with intellectual developmental disorder (IDD) are urgently needed, but few specific tools have been developed. The present study examines the psychometric properties of the EVTEA-DI, a Spanish adaptation of the PDD-MRS, in a large randomized sample of 979 adults with IDD. Factorial solution analysis suggested a three-factor solution (stereotyped behavior, communication, and social behavior). The EVTEA-DI showed good reliability and convergent validity when compared to the Childhood Autism Rating Scale. Discriminat

Antiepileptic drugs with mood stabilizing properties and their relation with psychotropic drug use in institutionalized epilepsy patients with intellectual disability.

A large number of patients with epilepsy and intellectual disability take medication, amongst which antiepileptic and psychotropic drugs, often simultaneously. Certain antiepileptic drugs have mood-stabilizing properties, e.g. carbamazepine, valproic acid and lamotrigine. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the use of these mood-stabilizers is associated with a different use of psychotropic drugs in a population of institutionalized epilepsy patients with intellectual disability. We performed a retrospective, cohort study of adults with intellectual disability and epilepsy at the

Screening for intellectual disability in Dutch psychiatrically disturbed detainees: Assessing the psychometric properties of the Screener for Intelligence and Learning Disability (SCIL).

INTRODUCTION: Intellectual disability is a key subject in all mental healthcare institutions, including the forensic mental health services. The Screener for Intelligence and Learning Disability (SCIL) is designed to screen for intellectual disability in forensic populations. So far, this assessment method is only validated in "detention fit prisoners" with low need of care. The aim of the present study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the SCIL in a population of mentally ill detainees with high need of care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Screener for Intelligence and Learning Disab

Psychometric properties and factor structure of the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) in a Swedish community population of adults with intellectual disability.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties and factor structure of the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) in a community population. The Swedish version of the BPI-01 was administered by interviewing care staff of all adults (n = 915) with administratively defined intellectual disabilities (IDs) living in Örebro County, Sweden. Sixty-two percent of the participants had at least one behavior problem. Altogether, 30.9% showed self-injurious behavior, 41.3% stereotyped behavior, and 34.8% aggressive/destructive behavior. All but the self-injurious behavior scale re

Immature morphological properties in subcellular-scale structures in the dentate gyrus of Schnurri-2 knockout mice: a model for schizophrenia and intellectual disability.

Accumulating evidence suggests that subcellular-scale structures such as dendritic spine and mitochondria may be involved in the pathogenesis/pathophysiology of schizophrenia and intellectual disability. Previously, we proposed mice lacking Schnurri-2 (Shn2; also called major histocompatibility complex [MHC]-binding protein 2 [MBP-2], or human immunodeficiency virus type I enhancer binding protein 2 [HIVEP2]) as a schizophrenia and intellectual disability model with mild chronic inflammation. In the mutants' brains, there are increases in C4b and C1q genes, which are considered to mediate syna

Psychometric Properties of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-Third Edition Domain-Level Teacher Form in a Sample of Pupils With Intellectual Disabilities in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of adaptive competencies is important in the assessment, educational planning and progress monitoring of children with intellectual disabilities. The responsible use of diagnostic instruments in clinical and educational settings requires a comprehensive psychometric knowledge base for all intended uses of test scores. The Vineland-3 is a widely used instrument that incorporates three dimensions of adaptive behaviour: Communication, Daily Living Skills and Socialization. Despite their widespread use, few studies have addressed the reliability of the Vineland-3 Domain-Lev
