Artificial intelligence-based screening for amblyopia and its risk factors: comparison with four classic stereovision tests.

INTRODUCTION: The development of costs-effective and sensitive screening solutions to prevent amblyopia and identify its risk factors (strabismus, refractive problems or mixed) is a significant priority of pediatric ophthalmology. The main objective of our study was to compare the classification performance of various vision screening tests, including classic, stereoacuity-based tests (Lang II, TNO, Stereo Fly, and Frisby), and non-stereoacuity-based, low-density static, dynamic, and noisy anaglyphic random dot stereograms. We determined whether the combination of non-stereoacuity-based tests

A Boveri perspective on cancer biomarker testing using artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) can predict genomic alterations from histology, yet its adoption is slowed by a lack of trust. We argue that deliberate morphology (i.e., a cognitive understanding of histological features supported by standardized annotations) creates a bidirectional feedback loop between clinical practice and model outputs. We translate these observations into an actionable hypothesis for clinical and computational teams: that by enhancing explainability, deliberate morphology could facilitate the responsible deployment of AI biomarkers in oncology.

Artificial intelligence-based models for colorectal cancer diagnosis using laboratory tests: an exploratory retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is frequently diagnosed at advanced stages owing to the insidious nature of its early clinical manifestations and the lack of validated screening modalities. This diagnostic delay presents a substantial therapeutic challenge, underscoring the need to develop population-based screening strategies. Based on laboratory data, this study constructed a diagnostic model for CRC to explore a screening strategy for population-based tumor census. METHODS: In this retrospective case-control study, we analyzed anonymized laboratory parameters and baseline demographic a

A Revised Speech Intelligibility Rating (RSIR) test: listeners with normal hearing.

Two experiments were conducted to examine the intelligibility of 72 passages of connected discourse prepared by Cox and McDaniel in their development of the Speech Intelligibility Rating (SIR) test. Intelligibility was assessed with a method-of-adjustment (MOA) procedure in which listeners adjusted the level of a multi-talker babble until they could just understand 50% of a passage; the measure of intelligibility was the signal-to-babble ratio, dB S/B. The objective was to develop a Revised Speech Intelligibility Rating (RSIR) test that would comprise a large number of equivalent passages that

Effectiveness of the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test in people with Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Evaluating intelligence using conventional tools is very complex in patients with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS), as it is time consuming and requires levels of care that are difficult to sustain for this population. Therefore, we explore the ability of a brief test to assess intelligence in these patients. METHODS: This study included individuals with a genetically confirmed diagnosis of PWS, with regular attendance at transdisciplinary treatment in an institution dedicated to the care of rare diseases in Argentina. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV), the Wechsle

[Vocals in silence and noise. A simple test of resistance of intelligibility in noisy environment].

We have all noticed that there was no coincidence between the conventional audiometric tests--tonal, vocal, Metz tests--and the degree of impairment of understandability in noisy environments that the patients report. Some of them handle this problem better than these conventional tests suggest, others less well. The aim of this study is to take account of this dominating functional complaint: impairment in noisy conditions, and to assess it in order to follow up its evolution after medical, surgical and prosthetic treatments. The aim of the authors has been to describe an easy examination to

[The "Adaptive Intelligence Diagnostic Test" in clinical practice: 3 case examples].

After the main advantages of the new German intelligence test-battery "Adaptive Intelligence Diagnosticum" (AID) are stated, this paper gives several case-studies in order to illustrate AID's support to clinical psychology. The case-studies are all quoted from a Child-Guidance-like institution. They allow inferences which might not be likely to be gained by some other tests. Besides, they serve for pursuing practical handling, computation, and interpretation of the AID.

Smart diagnostics: Leveraging artificial intelligence for accurate at-home COVID-19 testing.

Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), the reference standard for COVID-19 diagnosis, is time-consuming, resource-intensive, and costly. Rapid antigen tests address these limitations but rely on visual interpretation, which may reduce diagnostic performance. This study evaluated the performance of artificial intelligence (AI) for interpreting at-home COVID-19 lateral flow antigen tests compared with visual interpretation, using RT-PCR as the reference standard. Subjects from COVID-19 treatment trials (N = 99) performed at-home antigen testing, and results were interpreted by

Phonetic Intelligibility Testing in Developmental Motor Speech Disorders: a Preliminary Tool in Hebrew.

BACKGROUND: Speech intelligibility is a core outcome in the assessment and treatment of individuals with developmental motor speech disorders. While open-set intelligibility testing is widely used, a closed-set phonetic intelligibility assessment, which evaluates listener perception of systematically varied speech contrasts, offers a focused approach to identifying segmental errors that impact intelligibility. However, such tools are unavailable in Hebrew. AIMS: This study introduces a novel, preliminary closed-set phonetic intelligibility tool designed for Hebrew speakers with development mo

Construction of an intelligent screening model for allergic rhinitis based on routine blood tests.

The incidence of allergic rhinitis (AR) has been increasing annually, severely impacting patients' quality of life and increasing socioeconomic burdens. The limitations of current diagnostic methods have made the development of efficient, low-cost early screening tools urgent. Based on routine blood test data, this study employed an ensemble hard voting strategy, a comprehensive filtering strategy, an embedding strategy, and a packing strategy to select 16 highly correlated features with a frequency of at least two occurrences as model inputs. Subsequently, the top three machine learning algor
