Clean intermittent self-catheterization does not appear to be effective in the prevention of urethral stricture recurrence.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC) on stricture recurrence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The incidence of stricture recurrence was assessed retrospectively in a group of 126 new patients treated endoscopically for urethral stricture in a general urological setting between 1994 and 2001, of whom 31 performed twice-weekly CISC and 95 did not. Stricture recurrence was defined as recurrent symptomatic stricture requiring further operative intervention following initial intervention. The mean follow-up available was 25 months (rang

Effect of Nurse-Led Intermittent Bladder Catheterization on Recurrence of Female Urethral Stricture following Urethral Dilatation: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Female urethral stricture (FUS) is a rare but significant cause of bladder outlet obstruction, often leading to urinary retention, recurrent UTIs and other complications. Conventional treatment like urethral dilation provides temporary relief but has a high recurrence rate. Intermittent bladder catheterization (IBC) is a promising adjunct following dilation that may reduce recurrence by maintaining urethral patency and preserving bladder health. Despite its effectiveness in managing urethral strictures, there is limited evidence regarding its implementation in female po

Long-term results of intermittent low-friction self-catheterization in patients with recurrent urethral strictures.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the duration of intermittent low-friction self-catheterization (ILSC) required to cause stricture stabilization. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Over a 4 year period, 101 patients with a median age of 62 years (range 16-85) with recurrent urethral strictures were recruited to the trial. All the strictures were treated by internal urethrotomy and the patients were then randomized to perform ILSC twice weekly for either 6 months (group 1) or 36 months (group 2). Out-patient follow-up with urinary flow rate was initially at 1 month and then at 3 monthly intervals. Stricture recurre

A new device for facilitating urethral intermittent self-catheterization by female patients: results of a pilot study.

CONTEXT: IC performed by patients themselves is the gold standard for patients suffering from neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction. But the process of intermittent self-catheterization (IC) by female patients can be challenging. DESIGN: A usability study for a new assistive device, named and trademarked 2LIP®, for facilitating urethral (IC) use by female patients suffering from a neurogenic disorder of the lower urinary tract (NLUTD) was realized. PARTICIPANTS & INTERVENTIONS: Leg spreading angles (LSA), forward body push distances (FBPD) and inner labia opening forces were measured in

Does treatment with clean intermittent catheterization in boys with posterior urethral valves affect bladder and renal function?

PURPOSE: In boys with resected posterior urethral valves (PUV) deterioration of renal function is seen during childhood and adolescence, which may partly be caused by bladder dysfunction. We present data on renal and bladder function initially and at followup of boys with PUV in whom the bladder dysfunction has been treated since infancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 35 boys with PUV. Bladder regimen, including early toilet training from the age of 1.5 years and detrusor relaxant drugs for the treatment of incontinence from ages 4 to 6 years, was introduced to all patients. A tot

Penile necrosis in a diabetic with renal disease and clean intermittent catheterization for recurrent urethral stricture. Case report.

In a patient with diabetic microangiopathy and renal disease, penile necrosis occurred in connection with clean intermittent catheterization. Microangiopathy of the urethral and penile arteries presumably lowered the local defences, so that the catheterization initiated penile necrotic changes by introducing bacteria and traumatizing the poorly vascularized urethral epithelium.

Influence of the great earthquake in the Chuetsu district on patients managing urination with clean intermittent self-urethral catheterization.

Natural disasters cause several medical problems for victims, especially for physically challenged people. The great earthquake in the Chuetsu district in Niigata Prefecture that occurred on October 23, 2004 caused serious damage in the disaster area. We investigated the effect of this earthquake on patients managing urination with clean intermittent self-urethral catheterization (CIC) using a questionnaire by mailing. The questionnaire was collected from 86 patients (60 men, 25 women, one sex unknown). The average age was 64.6 years old (males 64.1, females 65.8). By the first week after the

How to manage acute urethral false passage due to intermittent catheterization in spinal cord injured patients who refused insertion of an indwelling catheter.

PURPOSE: Acute urethral false passage is an important complication of clean intermittent catheterization in spinal cord injured patients. Temporary urethral stenting with an indwelling catheter is generally an excellent conventional therapeutic option to treat patients with acute false passage. However, how can acute false passage be managed in a patient who refuses insertion of an indwelling catheter? MATERIALS AND METHODS: For 3 years 5 male patients with acute urethral false passage due to catheterization refused urethral stenting because indwelling catheter insertion would prevent sexual
