Individuals living with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience interpersonal stressors that contribute to depressive risk. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) emphasizes the bidirectional relationship between interpersonal stressors and mood may therefore be a suitable treatment for PD-depression. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of delivering 12 sessions of IPT to depressed PD patients and explore the need for modifications. A secondary aim was to obtain descriptive information about efficacy outcomes. The study used a pre-post design without a comparison group. Partic

CONTEXT: Adolescent depression is highly prevalent and has substantial morbidity, including suicide attempts, school dropout, and substance abuse, but many depressed adolescents are untreated. The school-based health clinic offers the potential for accessible and efficient treatment, although it is unknown whether school-based clinicians can be trained to implement evidence-based psychotherapies for depression in routine care.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy modified for depressed adolescents (IPT-A) compared with treatment as usual (TAU) in school-based

The process of monitoring treatment outcome, also known as "client feedback," is increasingly becoming a recommended practice for psychotherapy. One concern, however, is how to integrate such a process into the work that psychotherapists typically do. Three clinical examples are presented, illustrating how a client feedback system can be used in conjunction with a specific theoretical framework, interpersonal process therapy (Teyber, 2006). The examples highlight that client feedback not only can be of minimal disruption to the psychotherapy process, but may also offer the potential to augment

Although poor partner support is a key risk factor for depression in pregnant and postpartum women, partners are not generally involved in treatment beyond psychoeducation. The aim of this "proof of concept" study was to test safety, acceptability, and feasibility of Partner-Assisted Interpersonal Psychotherapy (PA-IPT), an intervention that includes the partner as an active participant throughout treatment. Women more than 12 weeks estimated gestational age and less than 12 weeks postpartum were invited to participate if they fulfilled DSM-IV criteria for Major Depressive Disorder and reporte

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for bulimia nervosa has a specific therapeutic effect and determine whether a simplified behavioral treatment (BT) of CBT is as effective as the full treatment.
DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial involving three psychological treatments. Two planned comparisons, CBT with interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), and CBT with BT. Closed 12-month follow-up period. Independent assessors.
SETTING: Secondary referral center.
PATIENTS: Seventy-five consecutively referred patients with bulimia nervosa. Patients with concurrent anorexia ner

Importance: Extensively researched, exposure-focused therapies have dominated the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). No treatment benefits all patients. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), a nonexposure, affect-focused treatment, has emerged over 2 decades as an alternative evidence-based PTSD intervention. Objective: This narrative review critically assesses IPT outcomes for PTSD. Time limited IPT focuses on affect toleration and the interpersonal consequences of trauma rather than on reconstructing the trauma narrative and exposure to traumatic cues. Evidence Review: The autho

We employed standard literature search techniques and surveyed participants on the International Society for Interpersonal Psychotherapy listserve (isiptlist@googlegroups.com) to catalogue the multiple and highly creative ways in which Klerman's and Weissman's original concept of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) has been modified to meet the needs of a vast range of patient populations. Focusing first on adaptations of the individual treatment model for subgroups of adult patients, we next describe further adaptations of four major off-shoots of IPT: interpersonal counseling (IPC), IPT for ad

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) has demonstrated efficacy in treating mood and eating disorders. This article critically reviews outcome research testing IPT for anxiety disorders, a diagnostic area where cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has dominated research and treatment.
METHODS: A literature search identified six open and five controlled trials of IPT for social anxiety disorder (SAD), panic disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder.
RESULTS: Studies were generally small, underpowered, and sometimes methodologically compromised. Nonetheless, minimally adapted from its

Patients whose depression is complicated by a lifetime history of panic symptoms display a poorer treatment response to both psychotherapeutic and pharmacologic interventions. A newly adapted psychosocial treatment for depression with lifetime panic spectrum symptoms was evaluated in an open pilot study.

In the realm of precision psychiatry of mood disorders, the evolution of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is gaining momentum, necessitating a personalized approach that also takes into account cultural aspects. This study underscores the importance of incorporating cultural factors into the dissemination and application of IPT in Asia. Through a comprehensive analysis of a case illuminating how cultural influences impact the onset and treatment outcomes of depression, we emphasize the critical need for culturally informed IPT practices in China. This personalized approach not only enhances t

A single-arm pilot study explored the feasibility of adapting in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) by telephone to reduce psychological distress and to enhance coping during cancer treatment. Therapy focuses on role transitions, interpersonal conflicts, and grief precipitated by cancer. Breast cancer patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy received weekly sessions with a psychologist throughout chemotherapy and for 1 month afterwards. Patients could invite one 'partner' to receive individual telephone IPT. Psychosocial functioning was assessed using standardized measures at study entry, afte

The most prevalent disordered eating pattern described in overweight youth is loss of control (LOC) eating, during which individuals experience an inability to control the type or amount of food they consume. LOC eating is associated cross-sectionally with greater adiposity in children and adolescents and seems to predispose youth to gain weight or body fat above that expected during normal growth, thus likely contributing to obesity in susceptible individuals. No prior studies have examined whether LOC eating can be decreased by interventions in children or adolescents without full-syndrome e

PURPOSE: To examine the potential effects of group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-G) in alleviating negative emotions and enhancing interpersonal functioning among caregivers of adolescents with depression.
METHOD: A single-center, evaluator blinded, randomized controlled trial was conducted. Seventy-two primary caregivers of adolescents with depression were recruited and randomly assigned to the intervention group (n = 36; 12 weeks of IPT-G plus routine health education) or control group (n = 36; routine health education only). Participants were assessed at baseline (T0), immediately posti

American Indians face pervasive trauma exposure, collective histories of communal suffering, and elevated risk for depression and posttraumatic stress disorder. In addition to socioeconomic barriers, access to culturally responsive treatment is limited, which may compromise treatment engagement. The Iwankapiya study piloted the Historical Trauma and Unresolved Grief Intervention (HTUG), combined with Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), to reduce symptoms of depression and related trauma and grief. The study hypothesized that HTUG + IPT would lead to greater group engagement and decreased

BACKGROUND: Women with depression and childhood sexual abuse histories constitute more than 20% of the female patient population in publicly funded community mental health centers (CMHCs). Interventions are needed that address depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and social health.
METHOD: We compared Interpersonal Psychotherapy-Trauma (IPT-T), an IPT adaptation for this population and setting, to Clinic Psychotherapy (CP). CP clinicians were free to implement the psychotherapy of choice. Women (n = 162; 54% White, 10.5% Hispanic; 52.2% Medicaid-insured) with a major d

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a time-limited psychotherapy initially developed to treat depression. It has yet to be studied systematically for treatment of panic disorder. We modified IPT for the treatment of panic disorder and tested this treatment in an open clinical trial with 12 patients seeking treatment of DSM-IV panic disorder. Patients were assessed before during and after treatment. At completion of treatment, nine patients (75%) were independently categorized as responders (i.e., rated as much improved or very much improved on the Clinical Global Impression-Change Scale). Sub

OBJECTIVE: Digital communication via messaging applications and social media is central to everyday interactions. It can also reflect dysfunctional interpersonal patterns, which are particularly relevant in chronic depression and are addressed by the cognitive-behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy (CBASP). However, digital interactions remain understudied in psychotherapy. The authors introduced the electronic situational analysis (eSA) intervention to address digital communication in psychotherapy for chronic depression.
METHODS: Patients with chronic depression were recruited from a u

OBJECTIVE: Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy, developed to treat major depressive disorder. The aim of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation of the effects of IPT on depressive symptoms and quality of life among women with depression in Iran.
METHODS: Adult women ages ≥18 who met DSM-5 criteria for a current major depressive episode (N=30) were randomly assigned to receive 12 weeks of individual IPT or to a waitlist control (WLC) group.
RESULTS: Compared with women assigned to WLC, those assigned to IPT had significantly lower depression sco

Interpersonal synchrony is the dynamic coordination of two individuals over time, reflected in the alignment of their actions, emotions, thoughts, and physiological processes. Interpersonal synchrony is a core mechanism associated with therapeutic alliance and treatment outcomes in psychotherapy. However, given the largely correlational nature of current literature, manipulation of synchrony is essential in order to reveal its potential causal relationships with therapeutic relationships in psychotherapy. Despite growing recognition of its clinical significance, synchrony remains difficult to
