Exploring Family Planning Perspectives Among Men Receiving Medications for Opioid Use Disorder: Implications for Service Development.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have consistently found high rates of unintended pregnancy among women with substance use disorder. While research efforts have begun to focus on understanding needs and providing family planning services for women in treatment, few studies have included men. This has resulted in a gap in the literature regarding men's reproductive health experiences and family planning desires. METHODOLOGY: Between December 2019 and February 2020, we conducted semistructured qualitative interviews with adult men receiving medications for opioid use disorder at a safety-net healthcare syste

Unmet health care needs for patients with thyroid disease including thyroid cancer among Bangladeshi population.

We aimed to identify the unmet health care needs of and proposed potential solutions for patients with thyroid diseases, including those with thyroid cancer, among the Bangladeshi population. We performed a qualitative study using structured interviews with healthcare professionals involved in care management and surgery for thyroid diseases. The interviews were conducted in four hospitals across three large cities in Bangladesh, with participants gathered through convenience sampling. Key findings were categorised and summarised into themes by topic, such as challenges, barriers, unmet needs,

German physicians' perceptions and views on complementary medicine in pediatric oncology: a qualitative study.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use in children with cancer has a high prevalence. If (parents of) patients bring up the topic of CAM, pediatric oncologists (POs) face considerable challenges regarding knowledge and professional behavior. In this study, we explore German POs' understanding of CAM and related attitudes as well as challenges and strategies related to CAM discussions by means of semi-structured interviews analyzed according to principles of qualitative thematic analysis with parents of children with cancer. We could conduct 14 interviews prior to theoretical saturati

The extended functional practical examination (EFPE): an innovative model for advancing assessment for learning in postgraduate medical education.

BACKGROUND: The Extended Functional Practical Exam (EFPE) is an innovative postgraduate assessment model designed to overcome the limitations of traditional single-point practical examinations by adopting a longitudinal, experiential, and institution-based approach. This study aimed to critically explore the implementation of EFPE across different medical schools and examine its perceived educational value, impact on learners and institutions, and areas for improvement. METHODOLOGY: A reflective qualitative study involving different medical schools was conducted. Three samples were included i

GPs, families and children's perceptions of childhood obesity.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity has a high risk of becoming a chronic disease requiring life-long weight management. Evidence based guidelines were developed and distributed to GPs throughout Australia by the NHMRC, but current application falls short. Measuring height and weight, and calculating BMI for children appears to be rare. Some general practitioners (GPs) perceive significant barriers to managing this patient cohort, and patients report not having confidence in their GPs. AIM: To explore perceptions and experiences of treating childhood obesity of (i) GPs, (ii) families involved in a

Patients' perspectives on urethral bulk injection therapy and mid-urethral sling surgery for stress urinary incontinence.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The aim of this study was to identify all treatment decision factors that determined the preference for peri-urethral bulk injection therapy (PBI) or mid-urethral sling (MUS) surgery in patients with primary stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Second, we explored what patients expect from treatment for SUI and whether patients would consider PBI as a primary treatment option. METHODS: In a qualitative design, 20 semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted in women with primary SUI. Exclusion criteria were: previous PBI or MUS surgery; predominating urge

Do Communities Really "Direct" in Community-Directed Interventions? A Qualitative Assessment of Beneficiaries' Perceptions at 20 Years of Community Directed Treatment with Ivermectin in Cameroon.

Recent studies in Cameroon after 20 years of implementation of the Community Directed Treatment with ivermectin (CDTI) strategy, revealed mixed results as regards community ownership. This brings into question the feasibility of Community Directed Interventions (CDI) in the country. We carried out qualitative surveys in 3 health districts of Cameroon, consisting of 11 individual interviews and 10 Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with specific community members. The main topic discussed during individual interviews and FGDs was about community participation in health. We found an implementation g

Predictors of protective behaviour against ticks in the UK: a mixed methods study.

The objective of this research was to determine the most appropriate protective behaviours to promote in order to protect members of the public from Lyme borreliosis, to identify the drivers and barriers for these behaviours, and to determine the strongest predictors of tick-protective behaviour. We used a mixed methods study with qualitative interviews and a quantitative web survey. Interviews with topic experts and members of the public suggested that predictors of tick checking included perceived disease likelihood and severity as well as overall awareness of ticks and tick-borne disease. "Just to Jog My Memory": An Examination of Forensic Interviewers' Note-taking Behaviors and Perceptions of Notes With Child Witnesses.

In the current study, we surveyed forensic interviewers (N = 137) on their note-taking practices, perceptions of note-taking, and note-taking training. Many forensic interviewers surveyed (81%) reported that they take notes during forensic interviews. Of those, the most common reason for note-taking was to assist with remembering what the interviewee reported during the interview (89%) and to guide the formulation of follow-up questions (87%). Note-taking style was also reported upon, with most respondents indicating that they write down keywords that may be used again in the interview (78%),

Protocol for a qualitative study on the online connections of people with ME/CFS and the relationship between these online connections and offline lives.

INTRODUCTION: Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), is a debilitating chronic illness that affects the central nervous and immune systems, causing core symptoms of extreme fatigue, post-exertional malaise, cognitive issues and sleep disturbance. With reported higher online use than in other chronic illnesses, people with ME/CFS are often housebound and isolated and may struggle to maintain social relationships. Due to a lack of biomarkers, the illness is often contested, causing invalidation and stigma for those affected. This study aims to broaden the k

The daily practice of (suspected) coeliac disease management by general practitioners: A qualitative approach.

BACKGROUND: General practitioners (GPs) play a crucial role in diagnosing coeliac disease (CD). However, data on GP management of (suspected) CD patients is sparse. BACKGROUND: Severe neonatal jaundice can result in long term morbidities and mortality when left untreated. Phototherapy is the main-stay intervention for treating moderate jaundice and for prevention of the development of severe jaundice. However, in resource-limited health care settings, phototherapy has been inconsistently used. The objective of this study is to evaluate barriers and facilitators for phototherapy to treat neonatal jaundice at Malawian hospitals. METHODS: We conducted a convergent mixed-method study comprised of a facility assessment and qualitative interviews with healthca
