RATIONALE: Intracranial hemorrhage occurs infrequently in Japanese encephalitis (JE), and even less frequently with hemorrhage occurring twice. In this report, we describe the clinical features and outcomes of a patient with confirmed JE combined with hemorrhage twice.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient, a 71-year-old Asian woman, was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of hemiplegia following fever and diarrhea. Soon her condition worsened and a decreased level of consciousness, respiratory failure, and paralysis of extremities occurred. The brain diffusion-weighted imaging sequence showed susp

Deficiency of vitamin K predisposes to early, classic or late hemorrhagic disease of the newborn (HDN); of which late HDN may be associated with serious and life-threatening intracranial hemorrhage. Late HDN is characterized intracranial bleeding in infants aged 1 week to 6 months due to severe vitamin K deficiency. Late HDN is still an important cause of mortality and morbidity in developing countries where vitamin K prophylaxis is not routinely practiced. Children with cholestatic liver disease are at risk for developing secondary vitamin K deficiency because of fat malabsorbtion and inadequ

Thirty-six infants who had an intracranial hemorrhage (diagnosed by cranial ultrasound) within four days after delivery (mean age 2.4 +/- 0.9 (SD) days), were reexamined at three- to seven-day intervals for extension of their intracranial hemorrhage. Seventeen infants had a patent ductus arteriosus and were treated with indomethacin after the initial intracranial hemorrhage was diagnosed. The age for starting indomethacin was 3.8 +/- 1.1 days. Nineteen infants did not have a patent ductus arteriosus and did not receive indomethacin. Both the indomethacin-treated and nontreated groups were simi

Intracranial hemorrhage associated with meningioma is rare. Relatively, few such cases are described in the source literature, and it is estimated that intracranial meningiomas presenting with hemorrhage account for about one percent of all meningiomas. Hemorrhage can occur in both meningioma tissue and on the tumor surface. It can lead to intracerebral, subdural and subarachnoid hematoma. This can in turn cause high intracranial pressure with rapid neurological deterioration. Urgent neurosurgical intervention is often necessary. In our department, three patients with meningioma-related hemorr

Cerebral injuries refer to an actual injury to the brain matter. Injuries seen are concussion, contusion, or diffuse axonal injury. Bleeding into any of the meningeal spaces, brain, or ventricles is known as intracranial hemorrhage. Seldom do cerebral injuries appear as distinct entities but rather as a combination of injuries. The neurologic dysfunction is the sum total of the injury. The significance of the initial injury lies in the development of secondary events, such as edema, hemorrhage, and swelling. These events may lead to further deterioration and neurologic dysfunction. Treatment i

Eight patients, aged 2 months to 55 years, developed vitreous hemorrhages as a result of subarachnoid or subdural bleeding. Subhyaloid hemorrhages were associated with, or preceded, hemorrhage into the vitreous cavity in four cases. Most vitreous hemorrhages cleared spontaneously, several months later, without major visual sequelae. In one patient, intravitreal blood persisted after 28 months. Vitreous hemorrhage can be a serious complication in patients surviving subarachnoid or subdural hemorrhages and, though uncommon, probably occurs with greater frequency than previously acknowledged. PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy of radiomics features extracted from non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) scans in differentiating multiple etiologies of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).
METHODS: CT images and clinical data from 141 ICH patients from 2010 to 2022 were collected. The cohort comprised primary (n = 57), tumorous (n = 46), and vascular malformation-related ICH (n = 38). Radiomics features were extracted from the initial brain NCCT scans and identified potential features using mutual information. A hierarchical classification with AdaBoost classifiers was employed to

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of maternal diabetes mellitus (DM) with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and other intracranial hemorrhages (ICH) in newborns.
STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed the National Inpatient Sample dataset and compared prevalence of IVH and other subtypes of ICH in infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs) vs. those born to mothers without DM. Regression models were used to control for demographic and clinical confounding variables.
RESULT: A total of 11,318,691 infants were included. Compared to controls, IDMs had increased prevalence of IVH (aOR = 1.18, CI: 1.12-1.23, p < 0

BACKGROUND: Bleeding disorders and abusive head trauma (AHT) are associated with intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), including subdural hemorrhage (SDH). Because both conditions often present in young children, the need to screen for bleeding disorders would be better informed by data that include trauma history and are specific to young children. The Universal Data Collection database contains information on ICH in subjects with bleeding disorders, including age and trauma history. Study objectives were to (1) characterize the prevalence and calculate the probabilities of any ICH, traumatic ICH, a

In children with head injuries the severity of the neurological symptoms should concord with the patient's history and signs of neurotrauma on examination. Discrepancies between the (hetero)anamnesis and physical examination on the one hand and neurological findings on the other may indicate child abuse. The presence of both old and new intracranial haemorrhages in the absence of proportional trauma is generally considered as evidence for child abuse. However, these symptoms may also be the first manifestation of a congenital coagulation disorder. Three children, two girls aged 8 and 5 months

PURPOSE: To report a woman with two small circumpapillary and nerve fiber layer hemorrhages found on routine examination.
METHODS: Case report. The patient had a history of severe headache 2 weeks previously but no other symptoms or signs.
RESULT: Magnetic resonance imaging showed an intracranial aneurysm.
CONCLUSIONS: This potentially lethal abnormality should be considered with small unexplained retinal hemorrhages, even when the neurologic examination is normal. A history of recent headache should be sought.

PURPOSE: To ascertain whether the pathology of the eye and optic nerve might be useful in determining the manner of death in infants who died after sustaining apparent nonaccidental intracranial injury.
METHODS: Complete autopsies were performed on 13 infants who died of acute intracranial injuries after nonaccidental trauma. The infants were divided into two groups: nine with physical evidence of blunt trauma to the head, and four without detectable scalp or skull injury whose intracranial injuries were attributed to violent shaking (shaken baby syndrome). Six infants with no intracranial in

We describe recurrent intracranial hemorrhages (ICH) in a 22-year-old man with intellectual disability and seizures. One year after his first seizure, he presented for evaluation of a second seizure and was found to have an acute left frontal ICH on computed tomography (CT). Cerebral angiography demonstrated venous stasis of unclear etiology. One month after discharge, he was readmitted with a new right frontal ICH and subsequently developed additional bilateral frontal hemorrhages. Repeat angiography demonstrated persistent contrast opacification in the late venous phase, indicating venous co

A 77-year-old female in the hospital was found tachycardic and hypothermic by a nurse, and the patient's respiration subsequently ceased. Forensic autopsy revealed an intracranial cystic tumor that would have compressed the brainstem. On microscopic examination, the tumor was diagnosed as an Antoni A schwannoma growth, and recent multiple intratumoral hemorrhages in the intracranial schwannoma were observed, suggesting the sudden enlargement of the intracranial schwannoma due to intratumoral hemorrhaging. Accordingly, we diagnosed the cause of death as brainstem compression induced by the intr

The paper deals with the determination of infusion therapy tactics in critically ill patients with intracranial hemorrhages on the basis of invasive measurements of systemic hemodynamics. The routine hemodynamic parameters (blood and central venous pressures, heart rate) are noted to fail to assess the volemic status of the patients in full. Unlike the use of colloidal solutions, infusion therapy with physiological sodium chloride is not shown to correct systemic hemodynamics. It has been ascertained that in acute intracranial hemorrhages, infusion therapy with crystalloidal solutions leads to

In the late nineteenth century, Henri Duret produced minute brainstem hemorrhage in dogs by rapidly increasing their intracranial pressure. Whether those hemorrhages were the same as those seen today associated with transtentorial herniation is not agreed upon, and the term Duret's hemorrhages is rarely used. Duret's report on his experiments is condensed here and the value of computed tomography for detecting brainstem hemorrhages is illustrated by a case report.

Nontraumatic (or spontaneous) intracranial hemorrhage most commonly involves the brain parenchyma and subarachnoid space. This entity accounts for at least 10% of strokes and is a leading cause of death and disability in adults. Important causes of spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage include hypertension, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, aneurysms, vascular malformations, and hemorrhagic infarcts (both venous and arterial). Imaging findings in common and less common causes of spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage are reviewed.

The neurological manifestations of achondroplasia include megalencephaly, hydrocephalus, and progressive myelopathy or radiculopathy secondary to spinal stenosis. Subarachnoid and intracerebral hemorrhage have not been previously reported in association with achondroplastic dwarfism. This report describes two patients with achondroplasia who have died secondary to intracranial hemorrhage. At autopsy, the source of hemorrhage was found to be an arteriovenous malformation of the choroid plexus in one case and a ruptured aneurysm of the left middle cerebral artery in the other.
