PURPOSE: We report a rare case of systemic Hodgkin lymphoma with presumed intraocular involvement that resolved after systemic chemotherapy.
METHODS: Observational case report.
RESULTS: A 32-year-old woman with known Stage II Hodgkin lymphoma presented with 3 months of photopsia and decreased vision in the left eye. Fundus examination demonstrated vitreous cells, more than 100 yellow choroidal infiltrates involving the entire fundus, and retinal pigment epithelial defects in the macular region of the left eye. Ultrasonography showed chorioretinal thickening, and optical coherence tomography

Primary intraocular lymphomas are rare tumours that can be further subdivided into primary vitreoretinal and the even rarer primary uveal lymphoma. The incidence of primary vitreoretinal lymphoma (PVRL) has increased during the last few decades. Differential diagnostic distinction between lymphoma and posterior uveitis is often difficult, so that adequate diagnosis and treatment is often delayed. This is fatal, because PVRL is often associated with primary central nervous lymphoma. To confirm the diagnosis, prior treatment of cytological or histological detection of lymphoma cells is the gold

PURPOSE: Toxoplasmosis gondii is a common worldwide parasite that presents in the eye with focal retinochoriditis and vitritis. Although it is rare, ocular toxoplasmosis has been linked to primary intraocular (retinal) lymphoma, which is mostly a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.
METHODS: An elderly female patient was treated for recurrent ocular toxoplasmosis, and because of progressive vitritis, a diagnostic vitrectomy was performed. Shortly afterward, she developed multiple brain lesions. Pathologic examinations of the vitreous specimen and cerebral tissues were conducted, including tests for

Diagnosis of PIOL can be challenging. It requires a high degree of clinical suspicion and differential diagnosis includes infectious and non-infectious etiologies particularly the common masquaraders sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, viral retinitis and syphilis. The definitive diagnosis depends on demonstration of malignant lymphoma cells in ocular specimens or CSF. Ocular specimen could include vitreous, aqueous or chorioretinal biopsy. Ocular pathologist should be consulted prior to the diagnostic procedure to help handle and process the specimen appropriately. In addition to cytology, flow cytome

PURPOSE: Primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL), also known as primary central nervous system lymphoma, is a rare yet blinding and fatal disease. Often presenting with ocular involvement, it can masquerade as posterior or intermediate uveitis, thus delaying diagnosis. A noninvasive ancillary test such as fluorescein angiography could be helpful in raising the level of suspicion in the diagnosis of this disease.
METHODS: Results of fluorescein angiography (FA) and clinical characteristics of 17 patients (31 eyes) who presented to the National Eye Institute with the diagnosis of PIOL (confirmed by

PURPOSE: Intraocular lymphoma is a rare disease with a poor prognosis. Early diagnosis and early treatment greatly influence the survival prognosis of this disease. This retrospective study aimed to clarify the clinical features of patients diagnosed with intraocular lymphoma, and the diagnostic significance of results from analysis of vitreous samples including cytology, cytokine measurements, and the IgH gene rearrangement test.
METHODS: We reviewed 217 patients with intraocular lymphoma diagnosed at 25 medical institutions in Japan. Together with clinical observation, cytological analysis,

Primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL) is a rare form of primary central nervous system lymphoma that poses diagnostic challenges because of its nonspecific clinical features and complex imaging characteristics. This paper presents a focus case and 2 companion cases, highlighting the complexities in identifying and treating PIOL. In the focus case, a 66-year-old man experienced gradual painless vision loss with choroidal thickening on funduscopic examination and subsequent follow-up MRI. Transvitreal biopsy confirmed PIOL, and the patient was treated with intravitreal steroids and systemic rituxi

This retrospective study aimed to describe and classify cats with intraocular lymphoma, determine the proportion of cases with presumed solitary ocular lymphoma (PSOL) compared with ocular manifestations of multicentric disease and assess the clinical outcomes of these patients. One hundred seventy-two cases identified through biopsy submissions were reviewed histologically; 163 of these cases were subtyped according to the WHO classification system. Cases were categorized as having PSOL or ocular lymphoma with suspected systemic involvement (SSI) based on submission forms and follow-up data.

Subjective and objective symptoms following intraocular lymphoma could lead to a misdiagnosis at the beginning of the disease, which is the cause for the delay in an effective treatment. The most common manifestation of lymphoma is an inflammatory disease affecting the uvea. A multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis is required. Suspicion based on the ophthalmological examinations has to be verified by histology. We present a case report of a 78-year-old patient examined at our clinic, with progressive loss of vision in the left eye over 6 months, suspected of retinal detachment. Objective

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing association between ocular-central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). In this population, the disease generally occurs in a younger age group. The origin of these B-cell neoplasms remains unknown.
METHOD: Case study of a 26-year-old AIDS patient with an incidental finding of localized retinal vasculitis and local vitritis. Disease progression and the failure of antiviral therapy led to early diagnostic vitrectomy with vitreal and retinal biopsy. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) evaluation, head magnetic resonance imagin

Six elderly patients with ocular involvement by Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are reviewed. The characteristic clinical features were a history of fluctuating vision, findings of decreased colour vision, constricted visual fields, vitreous cells and subretinal infiltrates. Fluorescein angiography revealed pigment epithelial abnormalities and attenuated retinal vessels. Non-invasive investigations produced a definite diagnosis in two patients and a presumptive diagnosis in a further three. The ocular involvement was confirmed by vitreous cytology in only one patient: vitreous biopsies in three other p
