Intravitreal Injections in Mouse Models of Eye Disease.

Intravitreal injections are a commonly used technique in the treatment of some vitreoretinal diseases. In clinical situations, intravitreal injections are often used to deliver drugs that treat diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, and uveitis. Many preclinical studies in animals such as mice utilize intravitreal injections to test neuroprotective treatments and gene therapies before clinical use can be indicated. Herein, we describe our method and favorable practices for intravitreal injection into the eye of both preweaned and adult mice.

Intravitreal injections primary prevention: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Intravitreal injections (IVI) of therapeutic substances are one of the most common procedures in ophthalmology and, for sure, the most feared complication of them is endophthalmitis. Nowadays, a precise prophylactic protocol does not exist to avoid these infections, and the role of new antiseptic drops is an interesting field of research in this regard. In this article we are going to discuss the tolerability and the efficacy of a new antiseptic drop based on a solution of hexamidine diisethionate 0.05% (Keratosept®; Bruschettini Srl, Genoa, Italy). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a

[Patient's Knowledge after Informed Consent for Intravitreal Injections].

BACKGROUND: Intravitreal treatment (IVT) is one of the most common ophthalmological procedures. Therapeutic effectiveness is however dependent on patient compliance. Unwanted treatment cessation rates are high though. The authors therefore decided to analyse the patient's knowledge and treatment expectations, as discrepancies are known to negatively affect compliance and thus treatment outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was designed as an exploratory survey. In total, 100 patients presenting to an outpatient clinic of a tertiary care centre from October to December 2016 were included.

Contact dermatitis in patients undergoing serial intravitreal injections.

BACKGROUND: Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) medication, injected intravitreally, is currently the standard of care in patients with different retinal pathologies. Since its introduction in 2006, an increasing number of patients have undergone this procedure in Ghent University Hospital. Strikingly, more patients were diagnosed with contact dermatitis caused by ophthalmic products used during intravitreal injection procedure. OBJECTIVES: To identify which of the substances used during intravitreal injection is most likely to cause contact dermatitis. PATIENTS/MATERIALS/METHODS:

[Iatrogenic retinal defects after intravitreal operative drug injections].

BACKGROUND: Intravitreal operative drug injections represent one of the most frequently performed medical interventions. The risk profile is low. In addition to intraocular pressure elevation, the most frequent complications include exogenous endophthalmitis, vitreous hemorrhage and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Furthermore, isolated cases of lens injuries, macular holes associated with vitreoretinal traction and peripheral retinal defects have been described. In the present case series sharp iatrogenic macular and retinal defects are described. METHODS: Retrospective multicenter case co

The carbon footprint and wastage of intravitreal injections.

PURPOSE: The healthcare system emits greenhouse gas emissions and produces waste that in turn threatens the health of populations. The objective of our study was to measure the ecological threat related to intravitreal injections. METHODS: Emissions were separated into scope 2 corresponding to Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) of the building, and scope 3 corresponding to travels (patients and staff), and life cycle assessment (LCA) of medical devices (MD) and pharmaceutics. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and waste for a single injection were first measured through a waste audi

Intraocular Inflammation After Intravitreal Faricimab Injections: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Intraocular inflammation (IOI) is a rare but potentially sight-threatening complication that can occur after intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections. This adverse event has been under scrutiny in recent years due to an increased incidence, particularly with some of the newer anti-VEGF agents, such as Brolucizumab. Faricimab is a new anti-VEGF medication that has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. As it is relatively new on the market, long-term safety data is still being collected. METHODS: This is a retrospective c

The association between intravitreal injections and glaucoma: an update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections are the cornerstone of retinal disease management but raise concern for intraocular pressure (IOP)-related complications. This review summarizes recent evidence on transient and sustained IOP elevation, structural and vascular effects, and management strategies. RECENT FINDINGS: Acute IOP spikes occur in nearly all eyes, typically resolving within an hour, but recovery is delayed in glaucoma and ocular hypertension (OHT), increasing optic nerve risk. Spike magnitude depends on patient factors (age, diabet
