Lung volumes of Igloolik Inuit and Volochanka nGanasan.

BACKGROUND: Acculturation to a 'modern' lifestyle has apparently speeded the aging of FVC and FEV1.0 in the Inuit (6). To test this hypothesis further, we compared lung function between Igloolik Inuit and less acculturated nGanasan in Volochanka. METHODS AND MATERIALS: FVC and FEV1.0 were measured by Stead-Wells spirometer (13.5 L lightweight bell) on 210M and 157F Inuit, and by 7.8 L dry gas wedge spirometer on 80M and 66F nGanasan. Subjects were aged 11-60 years. RESULTS: The Inuit and the nGanasan were both some 10 cm shorter than the urban norms, but the ratio of sitting to standing heig

Ten years of "civilization": fitness of Canadian Inuit.

Data on the cardiorespiratory fitness of the Canadian Inuit has been obtained before and after 10 yr exposure to "white civilization." The population tested comprises 201 males (aged 9-76 yr) and 143 females (aged 10-69 yr), about 70% of the eligible population of Igloolik (69 degrees 40'N). During direct maximum tests to exhaustion, a higher maximum heart rate was attained in 1980-81 (194.4 beats X min-1) than in 1970-71 (184.5 beats X min-1); this probably reflects a closer approach to a centrally limited maximum as the Inuit have become familiar with white investigators. Birth outcomes in the Inuit-inhabited areas of Canada.

BACKGROUND: Information on health disparities between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations is essential for developing public health programs aimed at reducing such disparities. The lack of data on disparities in birth outcomes between Inuit and non-Inuit populations in Canada prompted us to compare birth outcomes in Inuit-inhabited areas with those in the rest of the country and in other rural and northern areas of Canada. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study of all births in Canada during 1990-2000 using linked vital data. We identified 13,642 births to residents of Inuit-inhabited are

Normative data on cardiovascular autonomic function in Greenlandic Inuit.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes is increasing among Greenlandic Inuit; however, the prevalence of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is yet unknown. The assessment of CAN requires an ability to differentiate between normal and abnormal. The aim was to establish normative reference data of cardiovascular autonomic function in Greenlandic Inuit. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, cardiovascular autonomic function was evaluated in participants without diabetes during the Greenlandic Population Study 2018 and in the town Qasigiannguit in 2020. Assessment included cardiovasc

Respiratory disease in Canadian First Nations and Inuit children.

First Nations and Inuit Children are disproportionately affected by respiratory infections such as viral bronchiolitis, pneumonia and tuberculosis. Rates of long-term lung disease following severe respiratory infections early in life, such as bronchiectasis, are also elevated. In contrast, rates of asthma may be somewhat less than in other Canadian children, although rates of poor asthma control are increased. Causes for the high rates of infections include poverty, overcrowding, housing in need of major repairs and better ventilation, and increased exposure to environmental tobacco smoke. Imp

Participatory research for chronic disease prevention in Inuit communities.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a community-based chronic disease prevention program for Inuit in Nunavut, Canada. METHODS: Stake-holders contributed to intervention development through formative research (in-depth interviews (n = 45), dietary recalls (n = 42)), community workshops, group feedback and implementation training. RESULTS: Key cultural themes included the perceived healthiness of country foods, food sharing, and importance of family. During community workshops, key problem foods for intervention were identified as well as healthier culturally and economically acceptable alternatives for th

Cancer in Greenlandic Inuit 1973-1997: a cohort study.

The increasing westernization of the Arctic countries may influence the very particular cancer profile of these populations. Our objective was to investigate the development in cancer incidence from 1973 to 1997 in a large and well-defined Inuit population in Greenland. Greenland is part of the Danish Kingdom, and population statistics covering both countries are available from the same registry resource. Data from the Danish Civil Registration System and from the Danish Cancer Registry were used to calculate age-standardized cancer incidence rates for the periods 1973-1987 and 1988-1997 for p

Factors associated with high-risk pregnancies in Canadian Inuit.

Antenatal risk factors and management problems during labour and delivery were examined for 141 consecutive deliveries in Canadian Inuit of the eastern Arctic. The applicability of three risk scoring systems for antenatal use was evaluated. Pregnancies were categorized as being at high, moderate or low risk according to the authors' published criteria. Only two of the systems gave statistically valid predictions of the outcome of pregnancy in terms of risk categorization. Sensitivity and uniformity of the systems were lacking: the risk scores were low in 32% to 58% of the pregnancies in which

Otologic findings in an Inuit population of cleft palate children.

Otitis media with effusion is almost universal in infants with cleft palate. Inuit children have a very high incidence of otitis media. The otologic problems of Inuit infants and children with cleft palate have not previously been reported. The current study presents 14 Inuit children with cleft palate. All show significant otitis media with effusion or chronic otitis media with tympanic membrane perforation. The management of otitis media in this special population of cleft palate children is discussed.

Pibloktoq (hysteria) and Inuit nutrition: possible implication of hypervitaminosis A.

The hysterical reaction among Eskimo peoples known as pibloktoq, one of a group of aberrant behaviors occurring among Arctic and Circumarctic societies termed 'arctic hysterias', has been explained by a variety of theories: ecological, nutritional, biological-physiological, psychological-psychoanalytic, social structural and cultural. This study hypothesizes the possible implication of vitamin intoxication, namely, hypervitaminosis A, in the etiology of some cases of pibloktoq. Its biocultural approach implicates elements of several explanatory classes, which are not mutually exclusive. Experi

Birth outcomes among First Nations, Inuit and Métis populations.

BACKGROUND: First Nations, Inuit, and Métis are at higher risk of adverse birth outcomes than are non-Indigenous people. However, relatively little perinatal information is available at the national level for Indigenous people overall or for specific identity groups. DATA AND METHODS: This analysis describes and compares rates of preterm birth, small-for-gestational-age birth, large-for-gestational-age birth, stillbirth, and infant mortality (neonatal, postneonatal, and cause-specific) in a nationally representative sample of First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and non-Indigenous births. Heat recovery ventilators prevent respiratory disorders in Inuit children.

UNLABELLED: Inuit infants have high rates of reported hospitalization for respiratory infection, associated with overcrowding and reduced ventilation. We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial to determine whether home heat recovery ventilators (HRV) would improve ventilation and reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses in young Inuit children. Inuit children under 6 years of age living in several communities in Nunavut, Canada were randomized to receive an active or placebo HRV. We monitored respiratory symptoms, health center encounters, and indoor air quality for 6 m

Eales' Disease in Inuit: A Short Report and Clinical Update.

PURPOSE: We report a case of Eales disease in Inuit and reflect on advances in telemedicine and treatment of retinal disease since the first report of Eales' disease in Greenlandic Inuit was published. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 41-year-old Inuit female complaining of blurred vision was referred to our eye department. There had been no sign of diabetic retinopathy during diabetic eye screening and the patient had been treated for tuberculosis in 2010. Telemedical assessment was suspicious for vitritis or vitreous hemorrhage in the right eye, and the patient was flown from Greenland to Denmark, w

The health of Inuit children under age 6 in Canada.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has suggested that Inuit children experience poor health as compared to their non-Aboriginal counterparts, although social determinants such as family and social conditions, lifestyle or behaviour, and cultural factors may be at play. The purpose of the current study was to examine the parent-reported health of Inuit children under 6 years of age living in Canada. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Data from the 2006 Aboriginal Children's Survey were used to examine measures of Inuit child health as rated by parents including child health, limitations to physical activity

Bone mineral content among Inuit - a systematic review of data.

Inuit are a distinct ethnic group living in an environment likely to influence calcium metabolism and skeletal health. Bone mineral content (BMC) is a marker of skeletal health and fracture risk. Age is a dominant risk factor for osteoporosis, emphasising the importance of skeletal health in the ageing Inuit populations. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of data on BMC among Inuit. We performed a systematic search for data on BMC among Inuit guided by an experienced librarian. The search identified 211 studies, of which six provided data on BMC among Inuit living in Alaska or

Cervical cancer screening preference among Inuit women in Nunavik, Quebec.

Self-sampling for oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) offers an alternative to the Papanicolaou (Pap) test for cervical cancer screening. We aimed to assess Inuit women's cervical cancer screening preferences. Eligible Inuit women aged between 25 and 65 in 2022-2023 were given the choice between self-sampling, sampling performed solely by the nurse or the Pap test and were administered a questionnaire on screening preference. Thematic analysis was performed on qualitative data collected through a questionnaire asking if and why women prefer HPV self-sampling or the Pap test for cervical cance

Cultural awareness of Inuit patients' experiences with emergency nursing care.

Around 1500 Inuit patients fly annually from Nunavik to hospital centres in Montreal. This is a tense experience for many Inuit, due to cultural differences, and task-driven nursing practices often inadequately meeting their holistic health beliefs. In this qualitative study, we explored the experiences of Inuit patients with emergency nursing (EN) in the McGill University Health Centre, to inform on the best holistic nursing practices to meet culturally specific needs. Data analysis from semi-structured interviews with four participants generated a single theme: "rationalizing the care". Whil

Racism in Inuit experiences in healthcare: findings from an environmental scan.

While the category of "race" has no scientific foundation, race and subsequent racism continue to be determinants of access to health for Indigenous communities globally, including for Inuit in Canada. This scan raised concerns from community members voicing racial inequities in healthcare. The aim of this review was to scan Canadian Inuit experiences of racism in healthcare. To date, no such work has been done, and contemporary Inuit experiences of racism in the healthcare context have not been systematically documented. We hope that this review will serve as a foundation for scholars, policy
