BioEssays : news and reviews in molecular, cellular and developmental biology2003eng
Various explanations have been proposed to account for complex differentiation and development in humans, despite the human genome containing only two to three times the number of genes in invertebrates. Ignored are the actions of adrenal and sex steroids-androgens, estrogens, glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and progestins-which act through receptors that arose from an ancestral nuclear receptor in a protochordate. This ligand-based mechanism is unique to vertebrates and was integrated into the already robust network of transcription factors in invertebrates. Adrenal and sex steroids infl

Catecholamines and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived peptides, some of the central regulators of the stress-response systems of vertebrates, are also present in invertebrates. However, studies are needed to determine how these hormones participate in the organisation of neuroendocrine stress-response axes in invertebrates. Our present work provides evidence for the presence of an adrenergic stress-response system in the oyster Crassostrea gigas. Noradrenaline and dopamine are released into the circulation in response to stress. Storage and release of these hormones take place in neurosecreto

The bag cells of the marine mollusc Aplysia are well-characterized neuroendocrine cells that initiate egg laying, but the natural stimulus triggering bag-cell activity has not been determined. As a first step toward identifying central neurons that might provide synaptic or neurohormonal input onto the bag-cell network, antibodies specific for alpha-bag-cell peptide (alpha-BCP) were generated. This peptide belongs to a small family of structurally related peptides that can elicit bag-cell activity in vitro. Antibody specificity was established by immunodot assay and preabsorption studies: immu

The terminal nerve is a ganglionated cranial nerve with peripheral processes that enter the nasal cavity and centrally directed processes that enter the forebrain. Members of all classes of gnathostomes have been found to possess a terminal nerve, some components of which demonstrate immunoreactivity to the peptides Phe-Met-Arg-Phe-NH2 (FMRFamide) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). To explore the possibility that lampreys possess a terminal nerve, we examined the distribution of these peptides in the silver lamprey, Ichthyomyzon unicuspis, by using antisera to FMRFamide and to four for

In mammals and higher vertebrates, calcitropic peptides are produced by peripheral endocrine glands: the parathyroid gland (PTH), thyroid or ultimobranchial gland (calcitonin) and the anterior pituitary gland (growth hormone and prolactin). These hormones are, however, also found in the neural tissues of lower vertebrates and invertebrates that lack these endocrine organs, suggesting that neural tissue may be an ancestral site of calcitropic peptide synthesis. Indeed, the demonstration of CNS receptors for these calcitropic peptides and their induction of neurological actions suggest that thes

In vertebrate sexual development, two important steroid hormones, testosterone and estrogen, regulate the sex-specific development of many tissues. In contrast, invertebrates utilize a single steroid hormone, ecdysone, to regulate developmental timing in both sexes. However, here we show that in Drosophila melanogaster, sex-specific ecdysone (E) signaling controls important aspects of gonad sexual dimorphism. Rather than being regulated at the level of hormone production, hormone activity is regulated cell-autonomously through sex-specific hormone reception. Ecdysone receptor (EcR) expression

Crustacean hyperglycemic hormones (CHHs) are neuropeptides involved in the regulation of hemolymph glucose. The primary source of CHHs has been identified as the neurosecretory neurons of the eyestalk X-organ and its associated neurohemal organ, the sinus gland. We have identified another source of CHH-like peptides in the nervous system. With the use of immunocytochemistry, cells in the second roots of the thoracic ganglia have been observed to stain positively for CHH-reactive material. We also identified a pair of cells in the subesophageal ganglion that contain large amounts of CHH-reactiv

Animal behavior is often organized into stereotyped sequences that promote the goals of reproduction, development and survival. However, for most behaviors, the neural mechanisms that govern the order of execution of the motor programs within a sequence are poorly understood. An important model in understanding the hormonal determinants of behavioral sequencing is the ecdysis sequence, which is performed by insects at each developmental transition, or molt. The adult ecdysis sequence in Drosophila includes the emergence of the insect from the pupal case followed by expansion and hardening of t

The aim of the present study was to investigate and to compare the effect of calciotropic hormones, human calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) I and II, salmon calcitonin (CT) and human amylin on the adenylate cyclase activity in abalone gill membranes. In addition to human CGRPI, human CGRPII and salmon CT stimulated the adenylate cyclase activity. No effect was observed with amylin. The higher effect was observed with human CGRPI and II that induced a 160-170% increase of the enzyme activity. Fifty percent of the maximal activity was observed with 3 and 8 nM of CGRP I and II, respectively.

Because of two successive rounds of tetraploidization at their inception, the vertebrates contain four times more protein-coding genes in their genome than the invertebrates: 60,000 vs. 15,000. Consequently, each invertebrate gene has been amplified to the maximum of four paralogous genes in vertebrates: the one-to-four rule. When this rule is applied to genes pertinent to gonadal development and differentiation, the following emerged: (i) Two closely related zinc-finger transcription factor genes in invertebrates have been amplified to two paralogous groups in vertebrates. One consisted of EG

BACKGROUND: Arthropods require periodic molting (ecdysis) for growth. While the neuroendocrine orchestration of ecdysis is well characterized in insects, it remains comparatively poorly understood in crustaceans. In insects, ecdysis-triggering hormone (ETH) from epitracheal cells and eclosion hormone (EH) from the brain initiate and coordinate ecdysis. ETH triggers pre-ecdysis behaviors, while EH amplifies ETH release and promotes neuropeptide secretion of crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP), myoinhibitory peptide (MIP) for exuviation. Definitive evidence for functional ETH and EH in crusta

Neuropeptides play essential roles in coordinating reproduction. Egg-laying hormone (ELH) is conserved in genetic sequence and behavioral function across molluscs, where neuronal clusters secrete ELH to modulate and induce egg-laying. Here we investigated ELH in the nudibranch mollusc, Berghia stephanieae. ELH preprohormone gene orthologs, which showed clade-specific differences at the C-terminus of the predicted bioactive peptide, were identified in brain transcriptomes across several nudipleuran species, including B. stephanieae. ELH shares deep homology with the corticotropin-releasing horm

Egg laying in the hermaphrodite freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis is a highly complex activity, including a series of internal activities (ovulation, egg and egg mass formation) which are closely correlated to a pattern of behaviours (alteration of locomotion and feeding, specific postures, oviposition). In this snail egg laying is induced by the neuroendocrine caudodorsal cells (CDCs), consisting of two homogeneous clusters at a total of 100 neurons. At egg laying these neurons release their products during a 60 min period of firing. The genes coding for these products have been cloned and c

Traditional healing methods involving hundreds of insect and other invertebrate species are reviewed. Some of the uses are based on the tenet of "similia similibus" (let likes be cured by likes), but not all non-conventional health promoting practices should be dismissed as superstition or wishful thinking, for they have stood the test of time. Two questions are addressed: how can totally different organ systems in a human possibly benefit from extracts, potions, powders, secretions, ashes, etc. of a single species and how can different target organs, e.g. bronchi, lungs, the urinary bladder,

The glycoprotein hormones of humans, produced in the pituitary and acting through receptors in the gonads to support reproduction and in the thyroid gland for metabolism, have co-evolved from invertebrate counterparts1,2. These hormones are heterodimeric cystine-knot proteins; and their receptors bind the cognate hormone at an extracellular domain and transmit the signal of this binding through a transmembrane domain that interacts with a heterotrimeric G protein. Structures determined for the human receptors as isolated for cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) are all monomeric3-6 despite

BACKGROUND: The protective external cuticle of insects does not accommodate growth during development. To compensate for this, the insect life cycle is punctuated by a series of molts. During the molt, a new and larger cuticle is produced underneath the old cuticle. Replacement of the smaller, old cuticle culminates with ecdysis, a stereotyped sequence of shedding behaviors. Following each ecdysis, the new cuticle must expand and harden. Studies from a variety of insect species indicate that this cuticle hardening is regulated by the neuropeptide bursicon. However, genetic evidence from Drosop

By using both immunofluorescence and peroxidase-anti-peroxidase procedures to detect cells producing the four islet hormones, supplemented by biochemical, biological, and radioimmunological assays of tissue extracts, it has been shown that insulin seems to be the most original hormone, apparently occurring already in invertebrates in cells of open type in the alimentary tract mucosa. Insulin cells also predominate in the first islet organ, namely that of the cyclostomes. The order of appearance in the endocrine pancreas during the subsequent evolution is: somatostatin; glucagon; and the pancre

Tachykinins (TKs) are ancient neuropeptides present throughout the bilaterians and are, with some exceptions, characterized by a conserved FX1GX2Ramide carboxy terminus among protostomes and FXGLMamide in deuterostomes. The best-known TK is the vertebrate substance P, which in mammals, together with other TKs, has been implicated in health and disease with important roles in pain, inflammation, cancer, depressive disorder, immune system, gut function, hematopoiesis, sensory processing, and hormone regulation. The invertebrate TKs are also known to have multiple functions in the central nervous

Molting disability severely restricts the sustainable aquaculture of the Chinese mitten crab, yet the neuroendocrine mechanisms coordinating physiological responses remain poorly understood. Using unilateral eyestalk ablation to remove the primary source of molt-inhibiting hormone (MIH), we performed time-resolved transcriptomic profiling of the thoracic ganglion at 24 h (early premolt) and 48 h (ecdysis) post-ablation. We identified 2825 differentially expressed genes and uncovered a biphasic molecular response. At 24 h, the thoracic ganglion activates pathways associated with neuromuscular a

The Japanese spiny lobster Panulirus japonicus lives on rocky shores and is mainly distributed along the Pacific coast around Japan. Due to the high demand for it, the development of aquaculture systems and increasing its resource volume requires further expansive production. However, a major factor preventing the establishment of aquaculture technology for this lobster is the difficulty with rearing processes from larval to juvenile production. A recent study shed light on the molecular mechanisms underlying larval development from the perspective of physiological functions of endocrine facto
