Vertebrate thyrostimulin and the other classical pituitary glycoprotein hormones are considered to have originated from a common ancestral hormone system early in Metazoan evolution. The invertebrate glycoprotein hormone, GPA2/GPB5, is the homolog of vertebrate thyrostimulin, and the only member of these glycoprotein hormones to be found in invertebrates. This review focuses on the GPA2/GPB5 signaling pathway in invertebrates, outlining its evolutionary origin and conservation, discovery, distribution, including receptor localization, and physiological relevance. Although the physiological rol

Cybutryne (irgarol) is a triazine biocide formerly used in antifouling paints worldwide and still detected in freshwater ecosystems in Europe, Asia, and North America despite its ban in antifouling paints in Europe in January 2017 and in the USA in April 2021. While primary producers are considered the most sensitive targets due to cybutryne's mode of action as a photosystem II inhibitor, data on freshwater invertebrates-particularly from standardized chronic tests-remain scarce. In this study, we investigated acute and chronic effects of cybutryne on three freshwater invertebrates representin

Air pollution has the potential to disrupt ecologically- and economically-beneficial services provided by invertebrates, including pollination and natural pest regulation. To effectively predict and mitigate this disruption requires an understanding of how the impacts of air pollution vary between invertebrate groups. Here we conduct a global meta-analysis of 120 publications comparing the performance of different invertebrate functional groups in unpolluted and polluted atmospheres. We focus on the pollutants ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and particulate matter. We show that benefici

The World Health Organization recently declared a global initiative to control arboviral diseases. These are mainly caused by pathogenic flaviviruses (such as dengue, yellow fever and Zika viruses) and alphaviruses (such as chikungunya and Venezuelan equine encephalitis viruses). Vaccines represent key interventions for these viruses, with licensed human and/or veterinary vaccines being available for several members of both genera. However, a hurdle for the licensing of new vaccines is the epidemic nature of many arboviruses, which presents logistical challenges for phase III efficacy trials.

Neonicotinoids are a group of insecticides commonly used in agriculture. Due to their high water solubility, neonicotinoids can be transported to surface waters and have the potential to be toxic to aquatic life. The present study assessed and compared the acute (48- or 96-h) toxicity of 6 neonicotinoids (acetamiprid, clothianidin, dinotefuran, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, and thiamethoxam) to 21 laboratory-cultured and field-collected aquatic invertebrates spanning 10 aquatic arthropod orders. Test conditions mimicked species' habitat, with lentic taxa exposed under static conditions, and lotic

Acoustic and traditional excavation methods were used in consecutive summers to conduct two geospatial surveys of distributions of white grubs and other soil invertebrates in two forage fields. Indicator variables were constructed from listener- and computer-based assessments of sounds detected at each recording site and then applied in geostatistical analysis, contingency analysis, and spatial analysis of distance indices (SADIE) of soil invertebrate distributions. Significant relationships were identified between the acoustic indicators and the counts of sound-producing soil invertebrates in

Most of the global population has inadequate micronutrient intake1, leading to cascading adverse effects on economies and human health2. Aquatic invertebrates are a diverse, productive and socioecologically important food3,4, yet their contribution to human nutrition is frequently overlooked5. Here, combining aquaculture production, capture fisheries and nutrient composition data, we quantify the contribution of aquatic invertebrates to global nutrient supplies. Furthermore, as nutrient information for invertebrates is sparse, using species-specific trait data, we develop a predictive model to

Hallucinations - compelling perceptions of stimuli that aren't really there - occur in many psychiatric and neurological disorders, and are triggered by certain drugs of abuse. Despite their clinical importance, the neuronal mechanisms giving rise to hallucinations are poorly understood, in large part due to the absence of animal models in which they can be induced, confirmed to be endogenously generated, and objectively analyzed. In humans, amphetamine (AMPH) and related psychostimulants taken in large or repeated doses can induce hallucinations. Here we present evidence for such phenomena in

Neuropeptides and regulatory peptide hormones control many developmental, physiological and behavioural processes in animals, including humans. The nonapeptides oxytocin and arginine vasopressin are produced and released by the pituitary gland and have actions on many organs and tissues. Receptive cells possess particular receptors to which the peptides bind as ligands, leading to activation of G-protein-coupled receptors, hence cellular responses. In humans and other mammalian species, oxytocin and vasopressin mediate a range of peripheral and central physiological functions that are importan

Invertebrate animals comprise more than 95% of the animal kingdom's species and approximately 40 separate phyla. Yet, invertebrates are an artificial taxon, in which all members simply possess a single negative trait: they lack a vertebral column (backbone). In fact, some invertebrates are more closely related to vertebrates than to their "fellow" invertebrates. For the purpose of this veterinary article, we have elected to review a handful of important groups: Coelenterates, Gastropods, Cephalopods, Chelicerates, Crustaceans, Insects, and Echinoderms. We have primarily included behaviors that

The idea that invertebrates may exhibit basic forms of emotion, and possibly sentience, is gaining traction as evidence of their advanced cognitive abilities continues to mount. While high-level cognition does not imply emotional states, invertebrates offer a unique window into whether such states can arise in small-brained animals. With their relatively simple yet highly structured nervous systems, they serve as tractable models for dissecting the mechanisms underlying emotional expression. To probe these processes, researchers have developed behavioural paradigms exposing different species t

The current decline of invertebrates worldwide is alarming. Several potential causes have been proposed but metal pollutants, while being widespread in the air, soils and water, have so far been largely overlooked. Here, we reviewed the results of 527 observations of the effects of arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury on terrestrial invertebrates. These four well-studied metals are considered as priorities for public health and for which international regulatory guidelines exist. We found that they all significantly impact the physiology and behavior of invertebrates, even at levels below those

Venomics research is being revolutionized by the increased use of sensitive -omics techniques to identify venom toxins and their transcripts in both well studied and neglected venomous taxa. The study of neglected venomous taxa is necessary both for understanding the full diversity of venom systems that have evolved in the animal kingdom, and to robustly answer fundamental questions about the biology and evolution of venoms without the distorting effect that can result from the current bias introduced by some heavily studied taxa. In this review we draw the outlines of a roadmap into the diver

Naturally occurring histocompatibility responses, following tissue-to-tissue allogeneic contacts, are common among numerous colonial marine invertebrate taxa, including sponges, cnidarians, bryozoans and ascidians. These responses, often culminating in either tissue fusions or rejections, activate a wide array of innate immune components. By comparing two allorejection EST libraries, developed from alloincompatible challenged colonies of the stony coral Stylophora pistillata and the ascidian Botryllus schlosseri, we revealed a common basis for innate immunity in these two evolutionary distant

In perennial crops, such as vineyards, permanent inter-row vegetation may help to preserve soil fauna and their associated ecological functions. However, vegetation is often removed by tillage to avoid water competition, even though this practice is recognized to be detrimental for soils and biodiversity. The objective of our study is to assess the effects of an intensity gradient of inter-row management on vegetation, soil chemistry and soil invertebrates. Vegetation, soil, and fauna (i.e. springtails, mites and earthworms) were sampled in 25 organic vineyards located in the Luberon (south-ea

Information on entomotherapy in Africa is fragmented across different countries, resulting in the lack of comprehensive documentation of the diversity of invertebrate species used in traditional medicine. This review systematically searched databases such as Google Scholar, Science Direct and Web of Science for articles published from 2000 to 2026 documenting the medicinal use of invertebrates in Africa. The search resulted in 21 eligible articles that listed 119 invertebrate species from 40 orders, as used in traditional medicine to treat 191 symptoms across 20 Sub-Saharan African countries.

Enterococci appear to have originated in the guts of early terrestrializing arthropods and invertebrates over 425 million years ago-hosts that are now highly diverse and widespread in nature today. Yet most knowledge of the genus comes from human infection-associated lineages with genomes swollen by the recent accretion of foreign DNA conveyed by mobile elements. Because invertebrates dominate terrestrial animal diversity and biomass, they would be predicted to constitute a major but little-explored reservoir of enterococcal diversity. We therefore systematically examined Enterococcus associat
