Level of dietary iron, not type of dietary fat, is hyperlipidemic in copper-deficient rats.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to determine whether high dietary iron will negate the protective effect of unsaturated fat against hyperlipidemia. METHODS: Forty-eight weanling, male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to eight dietary groups differing in the levels of copper and iron and type of dietary fat (saturated or unsaturated). The diets were either deficient (0.6 microg Cu/g) or adequate (6.8 microg Cu/g) copper and either adequate (53 microg Fe/g) or high (506 microg Fe/g) iron. All diets contained starch as the sole source of dietary carbohydrate. RESULTS: Regardless o

Dietary iron overload in southern African rural blacks.

A survey conducted in rural southern African black subjects indicated that dietary iron overload remains a major health problem. A full blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum concentrations of iron, total iron-binding capacity, ferritin, C-reactive protein (CRP), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and serological screening for hepatitis B and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections were carried out in 370 subjects (214 inpatients and 156 ambulatory Mozambican refugees). The fact that the geometric mean (SD range) serum ferritin concentration was much higher in the male hospital

Dietary iron content mediates hookworm pathogenesis in vivo.

Hookworm infection is associated with growth delay and iron deficiency anemia in developing countries. A series of experiments were designed in order to test the hypothesis that host dietary iron restriction mediates susceptibility to hookworm infection using the hamster model of Ancylostoma ceylanicum. Animals were maintained on diets containing either 10 ppm iron (iron restricted) or 200 ppm iron (standard/high iron), followed by infection with A. ceylanicum third-stage larvae. Infected animals fed the standard diet exhibited statistically significant growth delay and reduced blood hemoglobi

Dose-related effects of dietary iron supplementation in producing hepatic iron overload in rats.

The influence of varying the level of supplemental dietary iron on the development of hepatic iron overload was examined in rats. Two days after giving birth, Porton rats were fed a diet supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1 or 2% carbonyl iron, to institute dietary iron supplementation to the young via breast milk. After weaning, the offspring continued to receive the assigned diet until 32 weeks of age. Liver biopsies were taken from some rats at 8, 16 and 24 weeks of age and from all rats at 32 weeks of age, for assessment of iron overload. For both male and female rats, hepatic iron content was incr

Disparity between dietary iron intake and iron status of children aged 10-12 years.

Iron status was assessed in a representative sample of 188 adolescents living in a medium-sized city in Poland. Dietary intakes were evaluated using records of diet over a period of seven consecutive days. Subjects were considered to be iron deficient when two or more of the following parameters were abnormal: serum ferritin, transferrin saturation or mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration. Based on this definition, the prevalence of iron deficiency in the investigated sample of children aged from ten to twelve years was 12.7%. Iron deficiency anaemia was defined using the following criter

Effect of dietary factors and time of day on iron absorption from oral iron supplements in iron deficient women.

Guidelines generally recommend taking iron supplements in the morning away from meals and with ascorbic acid (AA) to increase iron absorption. However, there is little direct evidence on the effects of dietary factors and time of day on absorption from iron supplements. In iron-depleted women (n = 34; median serum ferritin 19.4 μg/L), we administered 100 mg iron doses labeled with 54 Fe, 57 Fe, or 58 Fe in each of six different conditions with: (1) water (reference) in the morning; (2) 80 mg AA; (3) 500 mg AA; (4) coffee; (5) breakfast including coffee and orange juice (containing ~90 mg AA);

Dietary Factors that Influence Iron Deficiency Anemia in India.

Iron deficiency anemia is a major public health concern in India and is widespread in different regions of this country. Nutritional iron deficiency, in particular, lack of sufficient consumption of heme iron and other dietary factors, are considered to play a role in the high prevalence of anemia in India. In this regard, we constructed a database of nutritional iron consumption by its source and dietary factors that affect iron consumption (Vitamin C, phytates, calcium, and polyphenols) at the district level using the food consumption database extracted from the national household consumptio

Serum ferritin concentrations in Africans with low dietary iron.

In the setting of high dietary, several studies have provided evidence for a strong effect of both high dietary iron and an unidentified genetic locus on iron stores in Africans. To investigate whether these effects are discernible in the setting of low dietary iron, serum ferritin concentrations were measured in 194 Zimbabwean men >30 years of age and 299 postmenopausal women who consumed a non-iron-fortified diet and who did not drink iron-rich traditional beer or other alcoholic beverages. Comparisons were made with non-alcohol drinking African-Americans studied in the third National Health

Variations in dietary iron alter behavior in developing rats.

Iron deficiency in children is associated with retardation in growth and cognitive development, and the effects on cognition may be irreversible, even with treatment. Excessive iron has also been associated with neurological disease, especially in reference to the increased iron content in the brains of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease patients. This study evaluated the effects of dietary iron deficiency and excess iron on physical activity in rats. The animal model used is developmentally sensitive and permits control of the timing as well as the duration of the nutritional insult.

Dietary iron intake of pregnant Nigerian women with anemia.

The daily dietary iron intake of nine pregnant Nigerian women with confirmed iron deficiency anemia was determined. The daily dietary iron intake from hospital meals served to ten other pregnant women was also assessed to serve as a control. The mean daily iron intake of the group of anemic patients on home diet was 14.6 mg (range of individual means = 8.37-25.28 mg), whereas the group of patients served hospital meals had a mean daily dietary iron intake of 36.92 mg (range of individual means = 25.09-46.47 mg). It is, therefore, clear that the etiology of iron deficiency in the patients studi

Dietary Heme Iron: A Review of Efficacy, Safety and Tolerability.

Iron is a fundamental micronutrient essential for oxygen transport, enzymatic activity, and metabolic homeostasis. Yet it remains the most deficient nutrient in the world, with more than 2 billion people estimated with iron deficiency anemia. In the diet, animal foods provide iron primarily as heme iron. Dietary heme iron is absorbed through the active transport pathways catalyzed by heme oxygenase in the intestinal enterocyte. This form of heme differs in its bioavailability, absorption mechanisms, and tolerability compared to non-heme forms of iron, including iron salts and chelates. Adding

Hemochromatosis: Evaluation of the dietary iron model and regulation of hepcidin.

Our knowledge of iron homeostasis has increased steadily over the last two decades; much of this has been made possible through the study of animal models of iron-related disease. Analysis of transgenic mice with deletions or perturbations in genes known to be involved in systemic or local regulation of iron metabolism has been particularly informative. The effect of these genes on iron accumulation and hepcidin regulation is traditionally compared with wildtype mice fed a high iron diet, most often a 2% carbonyl iron diet. Recent studies have indicated that a very high iron diet could be detr

Effect of dietary iron on fetal growth in pregnant mice.

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional disorder. Children and pregnant women are at highest risk for developing iron deficiency because of their increased iron requirements. Iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy is associated with adverse effects on fetal development, including low birth weight, growth retardation, hypertension, intrauterine fetal death, neurologic impairment, and premature birth. We hypothesized that pregnant mice fed an iron-deficient diet would have a similar outcome regarding fetal growth to that of humans. To this end, we randomly assigned female C57BL/6 mice to

Effect of tea and other dietary factors on iron absorption.

Iron deficiency is a major world health problem, that is, to a great extent, caused by poor iron absorption from the diet. Several dietary factors can influence this absorption. Absorption enhancing factors are ascorbic acid and meat, fish and poultry; inhibiting factors are plant components in vegetables, tea and coffee (e.g., polyphenols, phytates), and calcium. After identifying these factors their individual impact on iron absorption is described. Specific attention was paid to the effects of tea on iron absorption. We propose a calculation model that predicts iron absorption from a meal.

Dietary Iron Deficiency Modulates Adipocyte Iron Homeostasis, Adaptive Thermogenesis, and Obesity in C57BL/6 Mice.

BACKGROUND: Adaptive thermogenesis is an iron-demanding pathway, significantly contributing to whole-body energy expenditure. However, the effects of iron-deficient diets on adaptive thermogenesis and obesity remain unknown. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the impact of dietary iron deficiency on iron homeostasis in adipocytes, adaptive thermogenic capacity, and metabolic consequences in obesity. METHODS: C57BL/6 male mice were assigned to either the iron-adequate (IA, 35 ppm) or the iron-deficient group (ID, 3 ppm) at weaning. Upon 8 wk of age, both IA and ID groups received an isocaloric

Dietary Iron Intake and Anemia Are Weakly Associated, Limiting Effective Iron Fortification Strategies in India.

BACKGROUND: Anemia prevalence in India remains high despite preventive iron supplementation programs. Consequently, concurrent national policies of iron fortification of staple foods have been initiated. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the relation between dietary iron intake and anemia (hemoglobin <12 g/dL) in women of reproductive age (WRA; 15-49 y) with respect to iron fortification in India. METHODS: Data from 2 national surveys were used. Data on hemoglobin in WRA were sourced from the National Family Health Survey-4, whereas dietary intakes were sourced from the National Sample Survey

Differences in iron balance observed with dietary cholic acid supplementation and marginal iron deficiency in rats.

We investigated whether a cholic acid (CA)-supplemented diet and marginal iron deficiency (MID) diet influence hepatic lipid accumulation and iron balance in rats for 2 weeks. The CA diet enhanced hepatic lipid accumulation and modulated iron metabolism such as enhancement of fecal iron excretion, reduction in iron absorption, and no alteration in plasma iron levels. The MID diet did not alter hepatic lipid concentrations with reduced iron concentration in the liver and plasma. In combination, influence of the CA supplementation on the hepatic iron concentration was opposite between iron-suffi

Dietary Iron Intake and Biomarkers of Iron Status in Slovenian Population: Results of SI.Menu/Nutrihealth Study.

Inadequate iron intake and iron deficiency are recognised as a public health problem in the population at large, and particularly in specific subpopulations. Dietary iron intake was analysed using data of the national Slovenian food consumption study, SI.Menu (n = 1248 subjects; 10−74 years), while iron status was evaluated with laboratory analyses of blood haemoglobin, serum ferritin, and iron concentration in samples, collected in the Nutrihealth study (n = 280, adults). The estimated daily usual population-weighted mean iron intakes ranged from 16.0 mg in adults and the elderly to 16.7 in a
