Noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is a rare congenital cardiomyopathy resulting from an arrest in normal endomyocardial embryogenesis. This disease is characterized by numerous and prominent trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses. It may be isolated or associated with other congenital heart diseases. The disorder is clinically accompanied by depressed ventricular function, systemic embolization and arrhythmias. Sustained bradycardia is infrequent in prenatal life and associated with maternal collagen vascular diseases, structural heart diseases or long QT syndrome. Herein w

A 74-year-old man presented with left ventricular failure and nonsustained ventricular tachycardia. Coronary angiography revealed normal coronary arteries; left ventriculography showed hypokinesis of the lateral wall segment. The ejection fraction was 54%. Cine-magnetic resonance imaging showed a double-layered appearance on four-chamber view and marked trabeculations as well as intratrabecular recesses in the inferolateral segments on short-axis view, findings consistent with isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium (INVM). Contrast-enhanced imaging revealed hypoperfusion and dela

A 58-year-old man presented with left ventricular failure. Coronary angiography revealed normal coronary arteries and endomyocardial biopsy from the right ventricular apex was normal. Echocardiogram showed marked trabeculation and deep intertrabecular recesses most prominent in the left ventricular apex, anterior and the lateral wall. Cine magnetic resonance imaging showed double-layered appearance on long-axis, 4-chamber and short-axis views. These findings were consistent with isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium (INVM). Gadolinium-diethylenetriomine pentaacetic acid-enhanced

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular non-compaction has been increasingly diagnosed in recent years. However, it is still debated whether non-compaction is a pathological condition or a physiological trait. In this meta-analysis and systematic review, we compare studies, which investigated these two different perspectives. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive overview on the clinical outcome as well as genetic background of left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy in adult patients.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrieved PubMed/Medline literatures in English language from 2000 to 19/09/2018 on cl

Isolated left ventricular noncompaction is a genetically heterogeneous congenital disorder characterized by an altered structure of the myocardial wall. This cardiomyopathy is thought to be due to an arrest of intrauterine compaction of the myocardial fibers in the absence of any other structural heart disease. Noncompaction of the left ventricular myocardium is an uncommon finding and remains frequently overlooked even by experienced echocardiographers. However, a correct diagnosis of noncompaction has important implications due to the possible association with other cardiac abnormalities and

BACKGROUND: The noncompaction of myocardium is a rare myocardiopathy. The isolated right ventricular involvement is exceptional. We report two cases of isolated noncompaction of the right ventricular myocardium. CASE 1: I., 2 years old, investigated for a congenital cyanosis with severe functional repercussion. Her echocardiography revealed a complex congenital heart disease associated with isolate noncompaction of the right ventricle. CASE 2: A., 5 years old, was referred for history of syncope for the 2 last years. The echocardiography showed a severe pulmonary hypertension and an isolate no

Noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is a congenital cardiomyopathy characterized by prominent ventricular trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses. In most cases, noncompaction is an isolated disease confined to the left ventricular myocardium. Fertile eunuch syndrome is a hypogonadotropic hormonal disorder in which the levels of testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone are low. We report a case of biventricular noncompaction in association with bicuspid aortic valve and severe aortic stenosis in a 42-year-old man who was diagnosed with talipes equinovarus and fertile eunu

Noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium (NVM) is a rare cardiac abnormality of unknown etiology. The condition is characterized by prominent and excessive trabeculations in a ventricular wall segment, with deep intertrabecular spaces perfused from the ventricular cavity. Polycystic kidney diseases are characterized by the formation of multiple cysts in the kidneys and liver and, less frequently, in the pancreas. Cardiovascular abnormalities including hypertension, mitral valve prolapse, and intracranial aneurysms are also frequently recognized. However, polycystic kidney disease and isolat

BACKGROUND: Noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is a rare congenital cardiomyopathy characterized by numerous excessively prominent trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses. Noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is most often an isolated cardiac malformation presenting as a sporadic disease. Associated cardiac anomalies are present in some patients. We report a family with three adult males from consecutive generations having a biventricular form of noncompaction of the myocardium. Two of the patients have an associated Ebstein's malformation of the tricuspid valve.

Isolated noncompaction of the left ventricular myocardium is a rare cardiomyopathy typically showing a "spongy" myocardium on ultrasound. We report on the ultrasonic and pathomorphological characteristics of an infant who, at the age of 40 days, was treated by heart transplantation for isolated noncompaction. Noncompaction should be suspected in newborns with otherwise unexplained cardiomyopathy and a "spongy" left ventricle. However, ultrasonic and pathological findings may be much less pronounced at this age than later in life.

Noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium (NVM) is a genetically heterogeneous cardiomyopathy. Various mutations associated with NVM have been identified in several genes. NVM patients usually present with complications of dilated cardiomyopathy. We identified a missense mutation, c.5740G>A, p.Glu1914Lys of MYH7, by targeted next-generation sequencing in three infant siblings with isolated bi-ventricular noncompaction who presented with restrictive hemodynamics and severe clinical courses. This mutation appears to be associated with a severe phenotype and poor prognosis. Early heart transpla

Isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium has often been misdiagnosed as other cardiomyopathies because it is a relatively recently described cardiomyopathy with literature limited to case reports and case series and little awareness among physicians. We are reporting a case of isolated left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy that was misdiagnosed for over two decades.

Background: Noncompaction of ventricular myocardium is a cardiomyopathy that typically involves the left ventricle or both ventricles; it has often been associated with mutations in genes encoding sarcomere proteins. Little is known about isolated right ventricular noncompaction, as only a few cases have been reported. Case Report: A 30 year old G2P1 woman experienced a spontaneous fetal loss at 19 weeks and 4 days. An ultrasound examination at 19 weeks showed right ventricular and tricuspid valve abnormalities, ascites, and early hydrops. At autopsy, the right ventricular chamber was dilated

In the realm of cardiovascular health, isolated left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) stands out for its distinct morphological features and the clinical challenges it presents, particularly in adults. This literature review explores the intricacies of LVNC, aiming to unravel its epidemiological spread, diagnostic hurdles, and therapeutic strategies. Despite technological advancements in cardiac imaging that have improved the recognition of LVNC, a significant gap persists alongside a fragmented understanding of its pathogenesis. The studies scrutinized reveal a broad spectrum of prevalence ra

Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) is a cardiomyopathy characterized by two layered structures composed of prominent trabecular meshwork and deep intertrabecular recesses. LVNC was thought to be rare; however, heightened awareness has resulted in an increased detection of the morphological features of LVNC in routine clinical practice especially in the adult population. Although LVNC was classified as an independent primary cardiomyopathy of genetic origin by the American Heart Association in 2006, its definition, diagnostic criteria and clinical implications are still being debated. Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) is a congenital pathology that directly affects the lining walls of myocardial tissue, causing trabeculations with blood filling in the inner wall of the heart, concomitantly with the development of a mesocardial thinning. Although LVNC was described for the first time as long ago as 1984, our understanding of the disease with regard to its genetic pattern, diagnosis, clinical presentation and treatment is still scanty. LVNC can present as an isolated condition or associated with congenital heart disease, genetic syndromes or neuromuscular disease. This su
