The impact of heavy metal bioaccumulation on reproduction of the isopod Armadillidium granulatum was studied by exposing the animals to food contaminated with various sub-lethal concentrations of cadmium, lead and zinc salts over a period of three weeks. The analysis carried out by atomic absorption spectrometry on whole body and on isolated female and male genital systems highlighted that, although metal's bioaccumulation was always concentration-dependent, it varies considerably depending on the metal (Cd>Zn>Pb) as pointed out by the respective values of the concentration factor. The heavy m

Revista brasileira de parasitologia veterinaria = Brazilian journal of veterinary parasitology : Orgao Oficial do Colegio Brasileiro de Parasitologia Veterinaria2025eng
Parasite-host interactions are shaped by environmental and biological factors, leading to diverse host impacts ranging from tissue damage to physiological impairments. The Tocantins-Araguaia basin, particularly the Upper Rio Tocantins region, harbors remarkable fish diversity and endemism, making it a critical area for parasitological research. Here, we report the first record of parasitism by isopods of the genus Paracymothoa in Moenkhausia species (M. aurantia and M. goya) from the Upper Rio Tocantins basin. The parasites (Paracymothoa astyanaxi) were located in the buccal cavity and frequen

During a survey on the benthic invertebrates of the upper reaches of river Eo (Galicia, NW Spain), a dense population of epigean asellid isopods were detected in the source of the river. After examination, these specimens resulted to belong to a new species of the genus Bragasellus Henry Magniez, 1968. The new species comes to fill a geographical gap between the two alleged ancestral areas of the genus and is characterized by its appendix masculina (male pleopod II endopod), which bears a short but distinct cylindrical cannula and lacks basal process. Other characteristic traits are uniform bl

Terrestrial isopods possess large sensory setae on their walking legs. Increased fracture resistance of these elongated structures is of crucial importance, making the exoskeleton forming the setae an interesting durable material that may inspire biomimetic designs. We studied the cuticle of the sensory setae with analytical electron microscopy in order to gain detailed insights into its structure and composition at the nanometer scale and identify features that increase the fracture resistance of these minute skeletal elements. The setae are stiff structures formed by mineralized cuticle that

Gnathiid isopods are the most prevalent and ecologically important temporary ectoparasites of coral reef fishes and are important for supporting the functional integrity of coral reefs. Through their role as parasites, gnathiids can influence community dynamics in their ecosystem. The family Gnathiidae constitutes 12 genera, including the genus Elaphognathia that can be distinguished from other genera by the deeply excavated frontal border, dramatic lengthening of the mandibles, and addition of apical cusps in adult males. There are currently 25 known species of Elaphognathia described over a

In the present investigation, we identified a cymothoid isopod species, Livoneca redmanii (Isopoda, Cymothoidae), in the branchial cavity, skin, and muscle pouch of the common sole (Solea solea) (Soleidae, Pleuronectiformes) from Qarun Lake, Egypt. The parasite was identified by morphometric and ultrastructural analysis, and molecular typing of the 16S rRNA gene. Out of 625 S. solea specimens collected, 8.16% were infested with the isopod. For the first time, the ultrastructural features of L. redmanii in different growth stages were described, revealing the fine characteristics of the body ap

This case study presents two female dwarf zebu calves with permanent bilateral flexion of the stifle joint secondary to bilateral congenital lateral patellar luxation. The patella could be manually repositioned bilaterally in the first calf (14 days old), but re-luxated immediately with release of manual pressure (luxation grade III). In the second calf (28 days old) both patellae were permanently luxated laterally (grade IV). The right and left stifles of each calf were operated in a staged procedure with approximately 14 days between surgery of the two sides. While a lateral release and a me

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are 'extreme' environments harboring diverse animal communities, powered by chemosynthesis. Though vent-endemic macrofauna have been a center of interest since their discovery in 1977, macroparasites have received little attention. Here, we report a bopyrid epicaridean isopod infesting the symbiotic munidopsid squat lobster Shinkaia crosnieri Baba and Williams, 1998 from three vent fields of Okinawa Trough, and describe it as Pleurocryptella shinkai sp. nov. Although morphologically close to the congeners Pleurocryptella formosa Bonnier, 1900, Pleurocryptella wolffi

Parasitic isopods of fishes usually show wide distribution and low host specificity. This study investigated the occurrence of gill parasites in 120 specimens of spotted goatfish Pseudupeneus maculatus, marine fish of great economic importance for fishery community. The fish were captured monthly in the Coast of Pernambuco State, Northeast Brazil, between October 2012 and September 2013. Eleven isopods were found and identified as Rocinela signata. We observed lower infections in the gills of P. maculatus (prevalence 8.3%, mean intensity 1.6±0.3 and mean abundance 0.1±0.3) when compared to oth

A new species of the sphaeromatid isopod genus Ancinus is described and illustrated. It comes from the Cinvestav Merida research project, Invertebrate Benthic Diversity of the Yucatan Intertidal and Shallow Subtidal Zones. This genus is easily recognized by having an oval and flattened body; in males, the first two pereonal appendages are subchelate, while in females, only the first one is subchelate, the pleotelson is triangular, and the first pleopods and uropods are uniramous. This new species of Ancinus differs from all others by body surface smooth and unpigmented; eyes not elevated; sutu

Sardine flesh is highly valued for its nutritional qualities; however, isopod parasitic infections can cause substantial economic losses in sardine production. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the infection rate and morphology of the isopod Ryukyua circularis in Elbeheira Governorate, Egypt. A total of 633 samples of European pilchard (Sardina pilchardus) specimens were purchased from local markets in Edko City, Elbeheira, Governorate, over 12 months. Isopod parasites were carefully removed from host fish specimens, with attachment sites and density recorded before immediate preserv
