A comparison of tunnel geometry between the Formosan subterranean termite and the Asian subterranean termite (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae).

BACKGROUND: Stake surveys and in-ground monitoring stations have been widely used to study field populations of many subterranean termite species, but thus far they have never been intercepted by the invasive Asian subterranean termite, Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann), in southeastern Florida. To investigate the reasons for the inability of C. gestroi to intercept these in-ground monitoring devices, we compared its tunnel geometry with that of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. Two-year-old incipient colonies of both species confined in simulated structural infest

The morphological diagnosis of 2 economically important subterranean termites in Western Indonesia, Coptotermes curvignathus and Coptotermes gestroi (Blattodea, Rhinotermitidae).

In Indonesia, the control of Coptotermes curvignathus populations as living tree termite pests has been carried out since the early 20th century. Recently, C. curvignathus has been considered the main termite pest and designated as the only species model for wood and wood products resistance tests against subterranean termite attack testing protocol in the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). However, the species distribution range of C. curvignathus has been long questioned as Coptotermes gestroi is commonly reported as a species found in urban areas of Southeast Asian region, particularly in

Natural-product-based chromenes as a novel class of potential termiticides.

BACKGROUND: Among the termite infestations in the United States, the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), is considered to be the most devastating termite pest. This pest most likely invaded North America as a result of the disembarkation of wooden military cargo at the port of New Orleans that arrived from Asia during and after World War II. It has now spread over other states, including Texas, Florida, South Carolina and California. Devastation caused by C. formosanus in North America has been estimated to cost $ US 1 billion a year. The influence of ergosterol on termites' defenses against Metarhizium infections.

Termites respond to spores of pathogenic fungi that have adhered to the cuticle with brief bouts of rapid shaking, an alarm response that promotes allogrooming, which helps prevent fatal infections. The pathogen associated molecular pattern (PAMP) that elicits this proactive hygienic response is unknown. Ergosterol, an important component of the fungal cell membrane, has been identified as a potential PAMP in the subterranean termite Coptotermes formosansus. In this study, commercial or extracted ergosterol elicited a hygienic behavioral response in workers of the subterranean termite Reticuli

Resource adaptation drives the size-complexity rule in termites.

The size-complexity rule posits that the evolution of larger cooperative groups should favour more division of labour. Examples include more cell types in larger multicellular organisms, and more polymorphic castes in larger eusocial colonies. However, a correlation between division of labour and group size may reflect a shared response of both traits to resource availability and/or profitability. Here, this possibility was addressed by investigating the evolution of sterile caste number (worker and soldier morphotypes) in termites, a major clade of eusocial insects in which the drivers of cas

Characterization and in-vitro plant-based control of hindgut bacteria isolated from Odontotermes obesus Rambur (Termitidae) and Heterotermes indicola Wasmann (Rhinotermitidae).

Termites cause a serious menace to wooden structures all over the world. They rely mostly on entozoic fauna residing in their hindgut for the digestion of cellulosic and hemicellulosic materials. One of the ways to control termites is through their gut symbionts. The present study was designed to characterize the hindgut bacteria isolated from Odontotermes obesus and Heterotermes indicola. Furthermore, the growth inhibitory effect of eight tropical plant extracts was investigated to find out potential control agents for these bacterial isolates. The characterization of bacteria was carried out

Screening of reference genes for microRNA analysis in the study of solider caste differentiation of Formosan subterranean termite Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki.

The soldier caste differentiation is a complex process that is governed by the transcriptional regulation and post-transcriptional regulation. microRNAs (miRNAs) are noncoding RNAs that control a wide range of activities. However, their roles in solider caste differentiation are barely studied. RT-qPCR is a powerful tool to study the function of genes. A reference gene is required for normalization for the the relative quantification method. However, no reference gene is available for miRNA quantification in the study of solider caste differentiation of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. In this

The first ant-termite syninclusion in amber with CT-scan analysis of taphonomy.

We describe here a co-occurrence (i.e. a syninclusion) of ants and termites in a piece of Mexican amber (Totolapa deposit, Chiapas), whose importance is two-fold. First, this finding suggests at least a middle Miocene antiquity for the modern, though poorly documented, relationship between Azteca ants and Nasutitermes termites. Second, the presence of a Neivamyrmex army ant documents an in situ raiding behaviour of the same age and within the same community, confirmed by the fact that the army ant is holding one of the termite worker between its mandibles and by the presence of a termite with

Termite queen physogastry and associated mechanisms shaping a high lifetime fecundity.

Termites are eusocial insects whose colonies are usually headed by a pair of reproductives (queen and king). During its lifespan, the royal couple faces an age-dependent increase in fecundity. In queens, it reflects on the disproportional development of the ovaries and enlargement of the abdominal cuticle, a phenomenon referred to as physogastry. Beyond the impact on the ovaries and egg production, physogastry requires the morphological and physiological reprogramming of other systems such as the digestive, tracheal, muscular, and circulatory, resulting in a process that takes years to happen.

Genetic Analysis of Formosan Subterranean Termite (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae) Populations in California.

A new infestation of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae), was discovered in Canyon Lake, Riverside County, California. We used three mitochondrial DNA (COI, COII, and 16S) and seven polymorphic microsatellite markers to characterize the genetic relationship of the colony with two other colonies that were collected in 1992 and 2018 in La Mesa, San Diego County. Maximum likelihood phylogeny of C. formosanus based on concatenated COI and COII sequences revealed that the two La Mesa populations (CA01 and CA02) and the Canyon Lake populatio

Hypopharynx in termites: Morphological and functional aspects.

The hypopharynx morphology in workers, pseudergates, and soldiers was described in six families of Isoptera using scanning electronic microscopy. This is the first comparative study to detail the hypopharynx among different species of termites, and included 4 one-piece type (OP) and 9 multiple-pieces type termites (MP). The results showed different arrangements of the hypopharynx trichomes, with fewer of these structures in the frontal region of the hypopharynx in pseudergates and soldiers of OP termites. These characteristics did not apply to Serritermes serrifer, since its pseudergates displ

Morphology of the head-associated exocrine glands in Cornitermes cumulans with the description of a novel gland for the worker caste.

Exocrine glands are important mediators of communication in eusocial insects and the description of novel glands reflects the complex context in which these animals live. Here we revisit the head-associated glands in workers of the Neotropical termite Cornitermes cumulans through histological analysis and describe a novel gland for this caste, the intramandibular glands. This structure is located underneath the cuticle of the dorsodistal part of each mandible. The glands showed an epithelial arrangement, but the cytological morphology is complex, comprising classes I and III of secretory cells

Maintaining tandem movement cohesion through antennal movements in termites.

How do animals coordinate their motion during migration? Traditional models of movement coordination, for example, describing bird flocks or fish schools, rely on visual interactions. However, many animals are blind, requiring movement coordination through the maintenance of physical contact. The risks and cost of becoming accidentally separated may encourage the evolution of compensatory strategies. Here, we study tandem running in blind termites. We quantitatively investigate how these animals use their appendages to maintain stable pair movements. During tandem runs, male followers use thei

New distribution of Reticulitermes speratus speratus (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae) in Korea.

Reticulitermes speratus (Kolbe) is economically important pest in East Asia including Korea, Japan, and China where they infest wooden structures in urban areas. Previously, it has been reported that R. speratus consists of 5 subspecies, R. speratus kyushuensis Morimoto, R. speratus speratus Kolbe, R. speratus leptolabralis Morimoto, R. speratus okinawanus Morimoto, R. speratus yaeyamanus Morimoto, while only R. speratus kyushuensis was recorded in Korea in the past. However, it remains elusive if different subspecies of R. speratus other than R. speratus kyushuensis are present in Korea. In t

Termite diversity and damage assessment in urban trees from different parks of Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan.

Termite infestation is one of the fundamental problems associated with the loss of urban trees and ecological services. However, no such study has been performed in Pakistan to investigate the termite occurrence and assess such damages to urban trees caused by termites. For Lahore, research and comparable data on urban tree damages are rare or missing. This study surveyed six different microhabitats, including Bagh-e-Jinnah, canal vegetation, Model Town Park, Jallo Forestry, Race-Course Park, and FC College Vegetation employing the three belt transects (100 × 5 m) method. We geo-referenced ter

Proteomic-components provide insights into the defensive secretion in termite workers of the soldierless genus Ruptitermes.

Termite soldiers constitute the defensive frontline of the colonies, despite workers also perform such tasks, especially within the Neotropical Apicotermitinae, in which all species are soldierless. Workers of the genus Ruptitermes display an extreme form of defense, characterized by body rupture and release of a sticky secretion. Previous observations suggested that such behavior may be advantageous against enemies, but the chemical composition of this secretion has been neglected. Here we firstly provide the proteomic profile of the defensive secretion of Ruptitermes reconditus and Ruptiterm

When termites mimic disease: Vertebral osteolysis and indoor scene alteration in the French West Indies.

Entomologically induced bone modification is increasingly recognized in archaeological and palaeontological contexts yet remains rarely documented in forensic casework. We report an indoor forensic case of extensive vertebral destruction most consistent with arboreal nasutitermitine termites, herein reported as Nasutitermes sp. (Isoptera: Termitidae) in Martinique. A largely desiccated human skeleton, discovered in 2025 inside a locked residence, exhibited severe osteolysis of cervical vertebrae (C3-C6) and the right mandibular head. The lesions displayed diagnostic features of termite activit

Elimination of structural and tree infestations of the Asian subterranean termite, Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann) (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae) with noviflumuron baits in above-ground stations.

The traditional stake survey and in-ground (IG) monitoring stations have been ineffective in aggregating the Asian subterranean termite, Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann) in southeastern Florida. In this study, we used both IG and above-ground (AG) Sentricon stations to monitor and bait C. gestroi, and as expected, none of the 83 IG stations was intercepted. Despite this, AG bait stations with 0.5% noviflumuron were successfully used to eliminate C. gestroi colonies. From 2 field experiments, the mean colony elimination time (±SD) using AG baits were 6.4 ± 3.8 wk (n = 4) and 8.0 ± 2.1 wk (n = 12),

Evidence from amber for the origins of termitophily.

Fossil morphology is often used to infer the ecology of extinct species. In a recent report in Current Biology, Cai and colleagues [1] described an extinct rove beetle, Cretotrichopsenius burmiticus, from two specimens in mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber (∼99 million years old). Based on morphology and the taxonomic group to which the specimens belong, the authors proposed that Cretotrichopsenius was a termitophile - a socially parasitic symbiont of termite colonies. Moreover, the new taxon was claimed to represent the oldest "unequivocal" termitophile so far discovered, pushing back the known evo
