Zygomatic Implants for the Management of Severe Alveolar Atrophy in the Partial or Completely Edentulous Maxilla.

Treatment of severely resorbed partially or completely edentulous maxillae can include the utilization of the zygomatic process for immediate implant fixation and stabilization with immediate function. This approach may alleviate the need for significant grafting to enable implant placement in the posterior maxilla and allow implants to be placed into denser, more stable bone. Zygomatic implants, which have been used clinically for the past 20 years in the treatment of the severely resorbed maxilla, allow implant placement to support fixed prosthetics. Their usage can potentially shorten treat

Age changes in the human inferior alveolar artery--a histological study.

The inferior alveolar artery was examined histologically in non-irradiated surgically resected mandibles. A total of 39 edentulous and 11 partially dentate specimens was studied. Narrowing of the lumen was most commonly due to arteriosclerosis which confirms previous reports. Stenosis was not found to be either commoner or more severe than that recorded in other arteries in the body. It is suggested that apparent narrowing of the inferior alveolar artery seen on angiography may represent a form of involutional atrophy of the artery associated with dental extraction and progressive resorption o

Advances in the Treatment of the Partially Edentulous Patient.

Advancements in digital technologies over the past decade have revolutionized dentistry, particularly with the integration of digital workflows in removable partial dentures (RPDs). Key innovations include digital data capture and computer-aided design and manufacturing, which enhance patient comfort, streamline workflows, and reduce treatment time and costs. Initially embraced by fixed restorations, these technologies are now transforming RPDs, previously reliant on analog methods. The collaboration between dentists, laboratory technologists, and patients is essential for selecting optimal ma

The authors analyze case histories of 642 patients aged over 50 years with mandibular fractures, treated in 1988-1998 at Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery of Russian State Medical University. Multiple fractures occurred in patients with mandibular adentia 1.5 times more often than in patients with teeth. The sites of fractures were different in patients with intact occlusion and in those without teeth. Contrary to the traditional opinion, the study showed a high incidence of open mandibular fractures in patients both with and without teeth. Inflammatory complications develop more often than in

Interventions for replacing missing teeth: management of soft tissues for dental implants.

BACKGROUND: Dental implants are usually placed by elevating a soft tissue flap, but in some instances, they can also be placed flapless reducing patient discomfort. Several flap designs and suturing techniques have been proposed. Soft tissues are often manipulated and augmented for aesthetic reasons. It is often recommended that implants are surrounded by a sufficient width of attached/keratinised mucosa to improve their long-term prognosis. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether (1a) flapless procedures are beneficial for patients, and (1b) which is the ideal flap design; whether (2a) soft tissue c

Prosthodontic management of anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Ectodermal dysplasia is characterized by the absence or defects of two or more ectodermally derived structures. Anodontia or hypodontia is the most striking dental manifestation. In severe hypodontia, there is lack of alveolar development with consequent protrusion and eversion of the lips. Patients with anhidrotic forms suffer from heat intolerance due to lack of sweat glands and mild infections may lead to death in infancy from hyperthermia. A case of a 4-year-old child with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with partial anodontia is presented. Dental, oral, and physical features were taken in

Integrating jaw motion tracking and a maxillary complete denture in a digital workflow for immediate mandibular implant loading.

A digital workflow for the simultaneous rehabilitation of a fully edentulous maxilla and a partially edentulous posterior mandible requiring immediate implant loading is described. To provide stable occlusal support during mandibular surgery, a maxillary interim complete denture was fabricated in advance. Given the risk of occlusal wear, monolithic zirconia was selected for the fabrication of the definitive maxillary denture. To account for zirconia's limited adjustability, jaw motion tracking was used to ensure precise bilateral balanced occlusion. This technique enabled accurate functional o

Periodontal considerations in preparation for fixed and removable prosthodontics.

This article has presented many of the newer concepts and techniques that have been developed to treat a problem that has been of major concern to the prosthodontist: the problem of favorable periodontal support and poor or deformed edentulous ridges. In the past, dentists were not aware, or did not believe, that it was possible to reconstruct ridge deformities, and they resorted to prosthetic solutions to solve the problems of tissue reconstruction, function, and aesthetics. New procedures and concepts permit us to extend the range of therapy and hope we are able to offer our patients. It is

Importance of teeth in maintaining the morphology of the adult mandible in humans.

Edentulism can negatively affect both masticatory performance and dietary intake by altering the patterns of biomechanical stress and strain, which in turn modifies the morphology of the different regions of the mandible. The morphological changes in the mandible caused by these stressors are unknown when comparing mandibles across varying dentition states. This study investigated differences in the morphology of human mandibles across various states of the dentition. In total, 498 mandibles of individuals between 20 and 80 yr of age at death were sourced from the Raymond A. Dart Collection of
